Favourite "Old Internet" stuff - Let's reminisce about the Wild West days

I learned that Bing's image search recommends anything that looks vaguely similar to the one you selected, i.e, if you click an old computer screenshot, you'll get all kinds of pictures and videos with old UI's in them, even if they have nothing to do with your initial query. A quick search for fluxbox configs got me this time capsule:

I remember this guy had a website that had several flash games he made on it. There was one I particularly enjoyed that was a medieval fantasy game. It wasn't anything amazing it was more the novelty of being able to play it for free. It even has a rudimentary multiplayer system that I never bothered with. Years go by and I have long since forgotten about the game, I struggle to remember the name and eventually find it. The guy no longer maintains the game and has a post that says something to the effect of" I don't have time to deal with this shit anymore I have a family and kids please stop messaging me about it," but not in a rude way, more like a guy who was just kind of sad about the whole thing. He puts a bunch of files up for the game. I download one of the songs for some reason. I have since forgotten the name of the game again but I still have that file. I will attach it to this post when I get back to my computer
Legends say he still seeks his computer to this very day

The internet just felt smaller. Slower.
While the internet in terms of pure bandwidth and storage its orders of magnitude bigger than back then the lack of variety and cultural stagnation means there's actually less stuff. What do I care if there are TBs of video when 99% its the same crap done to game the algos? It is smaller now because there's nothing new to find, nothing new to discover, no matter where you go its the same ol' stuff with a twist, the most successful people in social media just tell they copied the last successful guy until it worked.

And it was slower as in it took forever to load anything on dial-up, but the pace of innovation was crazy, every year some new groundbreaking thing. Meanwhile we been stuck with FAANG for 20 years now, some people say "I hate web 3.0" but there's no web 3.0*, we're just in the consolidation of web 2.0 where those conglomerates have defacto become "the internet" for most people out there. Best we can hope is 2.0 going back to a less cancerous stage.

*Just like web 2.0 started with things like AJAX web apps and social media, 3.0 was supposed to be all about DAPPs and the metaverse but the former turned out to be just an expensive slow gimmick to pump up the value of eth shitcoins and the later a total scam that went nowhere, we're still in 2.0

Oh that's really cool! It's always a sweet feeling when someone decides to revive an old memory as a personal project!

I think I played that game ages ago. It was fun - my hero was named Hera.

I miss when people used to have colorful blog pages and websites in general. It added so much more personality than… whatever the fuck we have now with Web 2.0.

I also miss when I didn't run into scamming Jeets on every fucking platform. Sure, you had Nigerians sending emails about princes but at least they were funny.

Homogenization of social media and profile customization being seen as "cringe" might be to blame.
I miss people, especially kids on the 'net having funky profiles and gushing about their hobbies and whatever topic of the day, but sadly nowadays it seems that pride flags and shitty tranny memes have replaced their personalities.

Seeing people openly shit on Breadtube makes me feel hopeful because I miss it when fake people were shot down and laughed at. I miss it when everyone took things less seriously instead of celebrating performative activism by narc progressives who all just so happen to be abusive sex pests. Id rather have every single commentary yotuber be wiped from existence, regardless of politics, if it means we can go back to that.

cringe culture still exists- but its even worse now because the people partaking in cringe culture, who laugh at others, are fucking trannies and soyboys, and overall people who otherwise touts DEI talking points. So basically a bunch of crybullies who will try to ruin your life.
I saw this one video of this little girl, yes a LITTLE girl- she looked like she was 11, who called this TikToker a nigger, and of course the TikToker was one of those dudes that posts videos where he records people on those Omegle-esc apps. The fucker smiled at the end and boasted about how shes gonna be exposed, which obviously caused her to freak out and beg for him not to. All of it was recorded. All of it was posted online. All by some grown ass man. What a literal piece of shit. Yet people just act like its okay because "you shouldnt say that, she knew better".

I hope you all burn in Hell, I hope it becomes the norm to dox and threaten these people, to dig up their past and completely ruin them in relatalitation. Call me extreme but I'd argue that for these people in particular, it is morally justifable to make false allegations. As these people are so quick to spread false allegations themselves but as soon as its directed at them, then it comes "oh wait guys, lets hear all sides first". Nope, die you absolute human scum. Name one good thing these people contribute to society other than being fuel for narcisstic peoples' egos.
