When I first saw this thread, I thought the exact same thing. What's even scarier is, I can imagine some ween buying the teeth. :'(

Well, you know, we all only have one mother. She's the one that gave birth to you, and that is one of the most painful things a woman can do. So, yes, even Barb deserves some respect from Chris for that. This is why I can't quite agree with the whole Animal Farm analogy, where Chris is merely being held captive by her. Maybe there is some teeny, tiny flickering hope that Chris is merely sticking by Barb because its his responsibility?

Thing is though, this is the exact thing she wanted. She didn't want to raise Chris to be a functioning adult, she wanted her own retarded little igor to fetch her q-sands when she got older.

Chris is really being held captive by her though. She forces him to spoon with her, doesn't let him sleep in his own room and threatens to throw him out if he disobeys. With the way she treats him I'd say she doesn't deserve a shred of respect, regardless of the fact that she squeezed him out.

Nope. Not high. Maybe because I have this theory that Chris cares about his mom? At least on a rudimentary level? I mean, is Chris really the sociopath that people make him out to be? Like I said, it's a theory.

I think he cares as much about Barb as he does WTJU. Maybe a little fond of her, maybe he has a quid pro quo relationship with her, but if he could find china that would take care of him and provide everything Barb does, he wouldn't look back if that's how it needed to be.

Pretty much, but they only have each other at this point. That's the sad part, if not the saddest.
 
I'm with those who say this is just another Lego scam. Barb's on Medicare, and they cover this kind of thing. I wonder what he would say if someone pointed that out to him?

Chris is how he is because of how he was raised. There are other HFA children who don't act like that. There are kids who have more severe disabilities than Chris who don't act like that. Chris would probably be just as much of a spoiled brat even if he weren't autistic. At best, his parents just didn't bother to discipline him properly, and at worst they didn't get him the help he needed. They failed him, and now Barb is dealing with the fallout. I'm not saying that Chris doesn't hold some blame, but saying, "well, Chris was a bad kid, so it's not their fault!" is bullshit. If he was a bad kid, they made him that way. If you want to put blame on Adult Chris, that's one thing. Little Kid Chris? No. THAT is all about Borb.

I have talked with many people here on the forum who have had shitty parents and are great people striving to overcome what they have been dealt.

With that, your argument (and the other people quoting me) fails to realise that we are what we makes ourselves to be. Subscribing to the idea that we are molded is nonsensical.

I'm sure this point was already made before, but assuming Barb's hygiene is...exactly how everyone expects, her dental health issues could be a lot worse than she and Chris think. A lot of people think the whole "infected gums/teeth can spread to the brain" thing is an urban legend, but I know two people that have died from issues relating to dental abscesses.

I can't imagine Barb having friends, except for her running days when the friends were drunks from 30 years ago. And they weren't real friends, more like bar acquaintances that sometimes got a little overly friendly due to being drunk or high. I can't see Barb striking up a conversation with her neighbors and being neighborly. I can't see her socializing with other parents from the school. I can see her being shunned once the accusations and trouble started with the school, because who wants to be sucked into that kind of mess? I imagine Chris was raised in a very sequestered environment and never saw other adults come into the house or interact with Borb.
I know they didn't have other relatives coming around much to present alternative role models for Chris, but I bet Barb had run all the neighbors and friends most adults have off with her bellicose, weird and abusive behavior and attitudes as well. And I can see Bob as being content to sit in it, quietly listening to his records and tending plants in the greenhouse when it overwhelmed him. And I think that Borb's lack of normal, healthy relationships really deprived Chris of potential role models and a chance to observe other alternatives to the "normalcy" of adulthood Borb presented on their own.

So having said that, that is probably why is was so easy to sequester him from outside help. They certainly didn't present a support network he could turn to. The other place a kid could turn to would be school, and we see how that got started with the Greene County Conspiracy. Borb didn't trust schools, and taught Chris to distrust them as well. I see Chris looked to some of his teachers for support, but that relationship will only go so far before getting the evil school district officially involved.
