Outside church.... I'm sure they went to church social functions where they had tiny cucumber sandwiches and talked bad about the homos and people in interracial relationships

as much as I'd like to pile on stereotypes unfortuantely that's not true. It looks like he went to a more "everything is fine, everyone is great, we can work it out, let's not make a scene" liberal church, closely affiliated with the University of Virginia.

The issue of the Chandlers and race is not a very straightforward one at all. Bob had too deep a love for world music and the UN, to be just another redneck. im sure he was racist at many levels, but not in a cartoonish obvious way .

They probably are. I hear Efferdent has come out with some really improved denture cleansers as of late.

Next Barb/Chris argument will be caused by Chris wanting to take a pic of Barb smiling with her dentures out so he can post a pity pic on Facebook.
 
Why would anyone want her old dentures anyhow? If you bought those, you'd eventually see an apparition of Snorlax floating at the foot of your bed at 3 o clock in the morning, and she'll be wailing "revenge . . . REVENGE! Return muh teeth!"

Also, if anyone buys Bob's fiddle, then his ghost will come and pick it up, and a really bad solo from the Devil Went Down to Georgia will start playing.
 
You know in the old Looney Tunes show when someone would get like a cannonball shot into their mouth and their teeth would shatter like glass?

That's how I imagine Borb's teeth to look like.

And they weren't real friends, more like bar acquaintances that sometimes got a little overly friendly due to being drunk or high. I know they didn't have other relatives coming around much to present alternative role models for Chris, but I bet Barb had run all the neighbors and friends most adults have off with her bellicose, weird and abusive behavior and attitudes as well. And I can see Bob as being content to sit in it, quietly listening to his records and tending plants in the greenhouse when it overwhelmed him. And I think that Borb's lack of normal, healthy relationships really deprived Chris of potential role models and a chance to observe other alternatives to the "normalcy" of adulthood Borb presented on their own.

So having said that, that is probably why is was so easy to sequester him from outside help. They certainly didn't present a support network he could turn to. The other place a kid could turn to would be school, and we see how that got started with the Greene County Conspiracy. Borb didn't trust schools, and taught Chris to distrust them as well. I see Chris looked to some of his teachers for support, but that relationship will only go so far before getting the evil school district officially involved.

Just so. I think Bob probably had friends of his own ( The Koreans, war buddies, the jazz players) and even Barb had a friend or two ( the retirement party pictures and the one with Elvis.) Barb's abrasive, suspicious and just plain bitchy personality probably drove them all away. Which is just as well, as far as she's concerned. Then little Chrissun can't get any sense from anyone about what being a good person looks like and why she isn't that
