There are those 'free hugs' people but even they would probably shy from hugging Chris. I understand where you're coming from, at times I too wished someone would do something kind to Chris if only to alleviate the depression into which he has been sinking but then I remember that Chris is, well, Chris.
This retreating into childhood makes him come across as even more autistic than he was before. And that's saying a lot.

Not only can Chris not cope with his disease as he thinks others who share it are 'windows into hell'. So he just shot himself in the foot by alienating the one community whose members are naturally inclined to understand him and to cut him some slack. If Chris was willing to interact with productive autists (and there are plenty of those), he would realize that the 'tism card is not something to abuse and to serve as an excuse for doing nothing. But then again, if he did that he would have to confront his own issues and come to terms with the mess he is. Better to play with his ponies and wax poetical about the origins of Transformers.

Not a good idea... I know it may sound a bit harsh, but human kindness and companionship and Chris aren't compatible.

Showing him kindness and interest is kinda like feeding a gremlin Big Macs during a midnight bath.

After all... Remember the gal pals back during his high school days? They took pity on him, and decided to do exactly what you suggest, and how did that end up?

It screwed up Chris' relationships with other males permanently, and made him spend a decade searching for replacement gal pals.

If they hadn't programmed Chris at an impressionable age to believe that these kinds of relationships are normal, attainable and True and Honest, he might have turned out to be less of a Autismus Prime today.

Don't forget that he made significant overtures of stalking and harassing them, and more than once said words that were tantamount to threatening to sic his internet enemies on them if they didn't come live in his playhouse.

That's the gratitude you get from a guy who thinks it's fair to accept your kindness with one hand while simultaneously holding out his other to demand "the rest of it".

It not only taught him behaviors that would guarantee he'd utterly fail with all real women, but set him up to be a gullible sucker for fakes.

Chris would never go or that, it lacks the colorful woman's touch that artistic types like him have.

Chris' autistic/artistic brain would much rather go for something more colorful, and since women dressed in bright, pretty colors will never be accessible to him, this will be only alternative for Chris' free hugs

This, so much. As harsh as it may sound, had Chris been treated in high school as most weird kids are, he would probably be better off in the long run. Sure, it would be horrible while he was going through the process but it would prepare him for real life and the tough realities that sooner or later would confront him anyway. Had he known that girls would not be his friends (read: 'future Sweethearts') if he leered and acted his creepy Chris-way.
Ironially enough, even kindness backfires in Chris.

Had his high school career been less nice, he might be one of the many people who hated his teen years but went on to become normal members of society.

McMansion? Its a split level house which was super common when it was built and currently its a shit hole with a gigantic mortgage. Also at one point Bob actually made money and had enough for thier family to live in two houses.

They're still hardly impoverished, it does not matter if the money that they have left was left from Bob's own father.
Chris has hulu, cable, videa, toys, lives in a renovated home, has never gone hungry, has a car that he is making payments on, can afford internet access in his own home, can make minimum monthly credit card payments. Even if obesity does not define poverty in the Western world, Chris is still not not impoverished, he also has Barb's income as a supplement, which probably goes toward the rest of the bills too, even though she might protest a lot. Chris was even a very small success on Etsy and with donations the last year or so.
 
This thread is somehow still alive and yet again devolved into people complaining how Chris is buying things.

They are below the poverty line but yes they have it better than most other poor people. Dont expect it to last though. Its always been downhill since Bob died or rather when they blew all his money on a lawyer.

Technically only Chris is below the poverty level since he and Barb have some rental arrangement, I believe. Either way, they still don't live like poor people that can't afford internet and other luxuries.
