Fighting Games General

rising thunder is free and simple as fuck for beginners. combos are generally short to jump players into the metagame over perfect execution. the roster is tiny and some stuff is janky, but the core concepts are very approachable, highly recommended for neophytes.

C'MAWN I WAS BLAWCKING THAT

I would be pretty much in agreement with what has been said by others above. I still play USF4 over the others and I still think it's worth at least giving it a go to give you a good handle on patience and requiring more than simply offensive play in fighting games. However, it's on its way out next year for SFV, so there isn't much long-term investment embedded in there if you're wanting to start up.

MKX - at least last time I played it - had some pretty bad lag in online matches, so I wouldn't wholeheartedly recommend it unless you're prepared for the experience to be pretty wonky in that regard. USF4 has better netcode and it's much older; I would say that was NRS's biggest problem with MKX thus far - loved everything else though. The story is fun, the variations lend diversity to the fighters, and overall the more Injustice-esque gameplay has transitioned excellently over to Mortal Kombat.

I haven't played it, but I'm really wanting to play Guilty Gear Xrd as well - it has a very fun style of play and all the characters and music is some of the best in the genre. The learning curve and competitive level of GG is a lot higher from what I've been told though, so probably not a game for beginners.

I actually don't play a lot of fighting games outside of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, but there's my mains for a few I like.

Street Fighter series - Ryu, honestly I just seem to be the best as him.

Mortal Kombat series - Sub-Zero, Kano

Soul Calibur - I played on Dreamcast and at the time I was just trying to unlock things so I didn't really have a main, but when I started playing the missions, I liked Cervantes the best.

Touhou Hisoutensoku - Cirno, Marisa

Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy (dunno if this counts) - Cloud, Kain, or whoever I need to level up
This list still stands for me, when I do decide to play non-Smash fighting games.

I wanted to add one for Samsara, a crossover classes mod for Doom, but that probably doesn't count because it's a shooting game rather than a fighting game, and I'd probably just say Doomguy's my main anyway.

Oh golly, let me try and recall...

Tekken: Asuka, Lili, Leo, Dragunov, (sub) Nina

Street Fighter (in neutered V): Cammy, Karin, Rashid, Dhalsim

Skullgirls: Filia, Ms. Fortune, Eliza

Super Smash Bros: Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, Corrin, (subs) Sheik, Villager, Rosalina

Guilty Gear Xrd: Elphelt, Millia, Faust, Haehyun

Soul Calibur: CASSANDRA, Yun-seong, Raphael, Talim

Blazblue: Bullet, Ragna, Noel, Kokonoe

Dead or Alive: Kasumi, Mila, Tina, Nyotengu

Still haven't got my hands on SFV due to financial difficulties. I am disappoint.

Thinking I should just wait and see what happens with these so-called PS4 "upgrade" consoles coming out in the near future. Maybe by then they'll put Akuma into the next.

So this thread's back, huh? Cool.

Guilty Gear Xrd: Slayer (you can keep nerfing him all you want Arcsys, I'm not gonna stop using that glorious dandy man ), Millia, Sin

BlazBlue: Valkenhayn, Taokaka

Mortal Kombat X: Reptile (Nimble), Takeda (Shirai Ryu), Kenshi (Possessed), Erron Black (Outlaw). Really disappointed by how much they changed Kung Lao and Kitana, my two mains from MK9

Capcom pretty much ruined Chun-Li in SFV, so I just stick with Ken, Rashid, and Cammy. I also had a lot of fun with Juri in the story mode so I can't wait for her to be out.

I just now started getting into King of Fighters after buying 2002 Unlimited Match on Steam. Still getting used to it, but I'm really interested in King, Benimaru, and Terry

I pray to God they're keeping Terry's amazing Engrish in KoF XIV

Ah, nice to see a thread for fighting games here. Here's my character main list:
Vampire Savior: BB Hood (or Bulleta if you prefer)
Marvel vs Capcom 2: Ruby Heart, Doom, and...I think Psylocke or Jill.
King of Fighters (general): Leona
Guilty Gear Xrd: Ramlethal Valentine
Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code: C-Ryougi
Soul Calibur 2: Taki, Mitsurugi (occasionally)
Super Smash Bros. Melee - Pikachu
Super Smash Bros. Wii U - Ike, Greninja, Marth/Lucina
Tekken: Asuka (5 and beyond), Jin (Tekken 3)
Hokuto no Ken: Kenshiro

I'm thinking about playing a lot of KoFXIV once I get it.

Mortal Kombat 1: Skorpion
MK2: Reptile
MK3: Smoke, Sector, and Cyrax (I like the robots)
UMK3: Smoke again duh
Xmen Vs Street Fighter: Cyclops and Ken
Marvel Vs Capcom 2: Guile, Sentinel, and T-Bonne/TronBonne
Original Street Fighter: Guile

Side Note: Anyone remember back in the game, playing the Original Streetfighter II in the Arcades? Either that one or Championship Edition, doesn't matter. Remember how huge that game was? Jesus Christ, you could go in any arcade at the time and there would be a literally crowd of grown ass men surrounding the Street Fighter machine.

Anyway, for some reason, in my area, everybody called Guile, GULLY lol. So instead of how normal people say it, like it's spelled, GUY-UL, they would call him GULLY, like that movie, Ferngully. I think it started with the blacks and Asians that used to really like playing, and just spread out from there amongst the general Street Fighter II arcade players.

It lasted a lonnnng time too. This started in the early 90s when SFII was big, but I can remember as recent as 7 or 8 years ago before the last arcade in my area closed down, playing a game of Marvel vs Capcom II and there was a small crowd around and a black guy that was watching went, "Ughhhh, that nigga BAD wit' GULLLY!!!" lol.

The main fighting games I play are Tekken and Soul Calibur. In Tekken, I main Steve Fox, and for Soul Calibur I don't have a specific character I main, although I tend to use Ivy the most.

Got King of Fighters XIV and have been playing it pretty much all day. I'm not a big fan of the Rush combo feature, but other than that I think it's pretty good considering it's only my second KoF game I've been seriously playing.

I'm still trying to figure out the right team for me, but for single vs I stick with King.

Virtua Fighter 4 and 5 are my favorite fighting games. I would actually buy a console if Sega ever made a VF 6 but I don't think they ever will. There's been a smattering of rumors here and there but nothing substantial. My mains are Brad, Lei Fei and to a lesser extent, El Blaze (HOT DOG!).

Embarrassed to admit, but aside from playing a ton of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 as a kid, I never really got into 2D fighting games. I like the art styles and a lot of the character designs from games like Guilty Gear and KoF but they're nothing I really invested a lot of time in.

As far as fighting games go, here's my mains from what I've played. I do suck at them but there's still fun in playing some of them.
Tekken: Paul Phoenix
Soul Calibur: Mitsurugi, Kilik, Maxi
MvC2: Strider, Hayato, Jin Saotome
Bloody Roar: Stun the Insect, Long the Tiger

This one is cheating because it's pretty much a custom character you make but what the hell,
Def Jam Fight for NY: player character with martial arts and street fighting

The original Soul Caliber is the only non-smash game I have played recently, me and my brother spar in it a lot.

My usual main? I like Disco Elvis (Maxi) even if he has a habit of his moves fighting against the player. The second game toned down on the struggle but he just wasn't the same.

My main when my brother is being a dick? Rock has two medium damage near instant moves, one of which is where he headbutts you and whether or not you block, you are moving backwards. Eventually you can drive your opponent to the edge of the stage and spam headbutt till he misses and falls to his death.

Def Jam Fight for NY was such an insanely fun game. I loved the environmental interaction and just the fun, chaotic nature of the gameplay. It was as one of those PS2 games that I kept finding myself going back to time and again.

Too bad Icon was such a clunky fuck-up of a game and they tried to fix what wasn't broken.

I'm actually not very good at fighting games, especially those of the technical, Japanese variety.

Nice to see more Bloody Roar players here!
A lot more than I expected honestly.
I like different genres but Fighting has to be one of my alltime favorites.

I always been a fighter fan. One of my firsts was Fatal Fury.Bloody Roar was really great. So was Psychic Force.

I wonder if anyone remembers that one Fighter that featured the FF7 characters. I liked that one as well.
