Fighting Games General

Soul Calibur: Kilik, Link, Nightmare
Injustice: Deathstroke, Solomon Grundy
Tekken: Yoshimitsu, King
Dragon Ball Z BT3: Freiza
MKx: Sub-zero
Smash Bros: Kirby, Lucina

I'm pretty terrible at fighting games tbh.

my favorite fighting game is Dragonball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3. There are so many characters and I just love the combat system. And this game is also a favorite of many Dragonball fans (yet game devs continue to try new combat systems that the fans like less and less. The game that came the closest to what the fans wanted was the Raging Blast series, particularly Raging Blast 2)

Anyway, on BT3 I typically main the Frieza Clan (Frieza, Cooler, King Cold), or Garlic Jr.

Other Fighters:

Darkstalkers: Jedah

Mortal Kombat X: Shinnok

Mobile Suit Gundam Xtreme series: Char Aznable in the Sazabi or M'Quve in the Gyan

Ew Smash isn't a fighting game.

Street Fighter V: Zangief, Cammy
Injustice: Harley Quinn, Lobo, Martian Manhunter
Ultra SFIV: Zangief, C. Viper
Skullgirls: Eliza, Valentine, Cerebella
GG xRD Sign: May
Shaq-Fu: Shaq

I'm completely terrible at most of them, yet love them all very much. In fact, it's my single favorite genre.

Guilty Gear: Sol Badguy, Chipp Zanuff, Axl Low
Street Fighter III - Third Strike: Ken, Dudley, Chun-Li, Twelve (I know)
King of Fighters '98: Iori, Heidern, Heavy D, Leona

Virtua Fighter is my shit. Pai (1-3), Lei-Fei (4-5)
X-Men vs Street Fighter - Chun-Li / Wolverine

Street Fighter 5: Birdie, Abigail
Tekken 7: Katarina
Ultra Street Fighter 4: Zangief

I got a long list:

Street Fighter Alpha 3: Akuma, Sakura, Dan
Street Fighter 3 Third Strike: Akuma, Ken (I've also taken a liking to Ryu and Chun lately)
Ultra Street Fighter 4: Akuma, Sakura, Dan
Street Fighter EX Plus Alpha: Akuma, Sakura, Garuda (and a bit of Skullomania if I'm bored)
Street Fighter EX2 Plus: Garuda, Kairi, Skullomania (and a bit of Shadowgeist)
Akuma is my main in SF, if you couldn't tell lol.

Mortal Kombat 1: Sub-Zero, Scorpion
Mortal Kombat 2: Sub-Zero, Jax (and a bit of Scorpion)
MK3: Sub, Smoke, Cyrax, Sektor (and Kano, somewhat)
UMK3: both Subs, both Smokes (H. Smoke is actually the character I use the most here), Cyrax, Sektor, Scorpion, Reptile.
MKT 32 bit: same as above, but add Noob Saibot to the mix.
MKT 64 bit: same as above, but there's only 1 Sub here.
MK4: Sub-Zero, Scorpion (I actually think I prefer Scorpion here), Reptile, Noob Saibot.
MKG: same as above, but add in Sektor (he's cheap as shit though)
MKDA: Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, Cyrax
MKD: Sub-Zero, Noob-Smoke, Scorpion, Ermac
MKU: Same as above. I occassionally play as Shao Kahn and Goro but I wouldn't consider them mains.
MKA: Sub-Zero, Chameleon, Noob, Smoke, Reptile, Scorpion. I don't recall playing with Cyrax or Sektor much here.
MKVSDCU: Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Batman
MK9: both Subs, Smoke, Scorpion, Reptile, Sektor, Kratos, Jax. (I used to main Noob, but ultimately disliked his playstyle here. Also mained Cyrax at one point, but I still like him but not enough to be a main)
MKSM (for shits and giggles): Liu Kang, Sub-Zero (and in VS), Reptile.

Tekken 1: Kazuya, Heihachi, Law, Paul, Lee
Tekken 2: Same as above, but add in Devil and Lei.
Tekken 3: Heihachi, Jin, Hwoarang, Lei, Law, Paul.
Tekken Tag Tournament 1: Same as above, but add in Kazuya and Devil.
Tekken 5: Heihachi, Kazuya, Devil Jin, Paul, Law, Lei. (I don't recall ever playing much with Jin, or Hwoarang in T5)

Zero Divide 1: Zulu, Cygnus, Xtal, Neco, Zero.
Zero Divide 2: Cygnus, Zero, Neco
Zero Divide 3: Same as 1st one barring Xtal.

First, if you're a newbie, great beginner characters to use are Kazuya

I really have to go against this, if you want to play Kazuya with actually doing something, you need to be able to pull out EWGF and all of the variations of it, including the 1 frame perfect version, also kazuya is bit slower so you have to rely on wavedash to keep outside of enemy range and getting in. If I had to choose starting characters, they would be Asuka, Katarina, Miguel and I guess Bob isn't too bad.

Pretty much disregard what I've said about Tekken in that post. My knowledge on the game has improved a lot since then. I realize now practically every Mishima isn't very beginner friendly.

More than any other fighter, I really do say that for Tekken, it's totally fine just to stick with a character you really like. But if we're talking more beginner friendly, the ones you mentioned are good and I'd probably also add Bryan and Eddy too.

I'm not much of a fighting game fan, but here goes.

Soul Calibur II: Seung Mina, Nightmare (I like range, but Kilik is such a cheese character he makes me shit pepperjack)
Guilty Gear XX: Baiken (all day every day)
P4 Arena Ultimax: Ken + Koromaru, Labrys (but only in Japanese, her voice grates on me otherwise)

So, I've started playing fighting games and wanted to see if anyone else here did. Anyone have weird stories about people they know, or general tips for specific games or the genre in general, or recommendations for sticks?

Sticks are pretty meme. I wouldn't drop hundreds of dollars on one and expect results unless you're semi-familiar with using them. You can just as easily play on pad if you practice enough. It's all a matter of preference tho.

The Fighting Game community is incredibly autistic like you wouldn't believe. I got so many dorks trying to act like they are the king of fighters in EVO tournaments. Despite the spergs, fighting games are challenging at some point and they're fun to play when you are with friends.

I recommend the Tekken series because it's in the 3D area of fighting and plus anyone can pick up any of the series and have a great time. Street Fighter is great if you want nothing but remembering that one specific command that you have to do. All the time. Every single moment.

I honestly think I'd do better with a stick, just because I merely felt like I didn't know what I was doing when I go to an arcade, and can can eventually get specials out on a stick; while I can only occasionally get hadokens on pad, and never a shorryuken or electric. Does that make any sense? I'm the same kind of spergy idiot that doesn't regret having a HOTAS, even though almost no games make good use of a flight stick.

I have a Hori RAP4 stick. I probably wouldn't recommend it as it is clunky (lots of tiny switches for Playstation-related shit), has a bunch of features I don't need, and I don't like the stick itself or the buttons (the stick is a square gate and I want an octagonal gate, the buttons don't click and are rounded tops instead of indents).

So you'd probably have wanted something with Sanwa parts than. I've been looking into stuff for the holidays, and MadCatz, Qanba, and Razer sticks use those and are easier to mod (the Madcatz and Razer sticks in the same price range open with a latch get at the interals and modding didn't void the warranty.)
Also, you can replace the gate if you don't care about Hori's warranty.

I've had the stick longer than the warranty period at this point, so I'll probably take it apart and put an octo-gate in it eventually, but I really haven't used it in a long time so it's way down on my list of things I need to do. Fighting games aren't an obsession for me, more of a random thing I play with someone when I have friends over and we need to kill some time.

I bought it because I needed to spend a balance on a specific e-money wallet and this was the only stick available in any store I could spend it in at the time.
