Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

Whoever made the decision to give everyone some in Tural some almost cartoonish latin american accents should go step on a rusty nail

Overall in spite of their sperging about wanting to be authentic and not un pc they end up making a setting that looks fine in the ancient bits, but any sort of more modern bits like the town itself, how the people act and shit is so cookie cutter and not really "authentic" to whatever the fuck pastiche of ancient spics they tried to do, somehow a nation that wasnt colonized or whatever still ended up with generic american west bullshittery whose only real native touches were some painted designs
My first thought is that they wanted to avoid some sort of obvious parallels to history by making the eorzeans hecking equal big chungus to them but then Sphene's people just did that analogy in a very hamfisted manner

Zorall Ja's heel turn was kinda forced and it was clear that they wanted the smuggery of building up Bakool as the obvious big bad but then giving him a heel turn in a single dungeon. I honestly liked this bit on Paper but i ts mostly sandwiched by him being cartoonishly evil and then the story forgets about him after the invasion, it would have been great to see him go with you throughout the plot aftewards and then maybe redeem himself by mentoring Gulool-Ja JR in place of Otis, but the story just kinda forgets, which kinda fucking miffed me because he was the only character that had some actual growth or catharsis in his arc

It is beyond me why you would use four voice actors, who have no range or who were told not to make use of any range, to voice an entire expansion. Like for fuck's sake, Galool Ja Ja is immediately recognizable as a whole host of side characters, because he has one voice. Koana's comes on screen, says a few lines, leaves - and then comes some evil lizard mook, who is... the exact same damn voice. Really, really helps immersion.

It has to be nepotism, like was said. - there is no way that this is the best they can do. There's no way that company can have that much money to throw around - on their flagship property no less - and get this amateur of a result.

Owlcat is a fucking Russian studio working on a kickstarter-AA budget, and you'll see less VA repeats in Wrath of the Righteous, a game that released mid-pandemic and which has a fuckton more voice acting in it than any individual FF14 expansion. And you get performances like these. Clear and crisp, but to the point: "Oh, he's stern and serious. Oh, he's a complete goofball. Oh, she's extremely autistic. Oh, she's a goodie-goodie two-shoes." I genuinely don't know what emotive presence the US studio performances are trying to convey, or what I'm supposed to get about these characters from their performance.

That gnome? Is the same guy as the dwarf here - so using repeats with people who have range isn't so bad. The demoness is the squeaky, high-pitched bard bard from the first game. And of course there's Doctor Eggman, all in a game that started out with $2M on Kickstarter and went on to fund itself with sales that surely aren't shit compared to the amount of cash Square has to throw around.

I tapped out even before the 91 quests. I'm just skipping - this shit is embarrassing. It's slow, it's boring, it's painfully unfunny, none of the characters have any voice or personality, and above all else they have failed monumentally to establish any reason at all as to why I should even remotely care.

generic american west bullshittery
I actually really enjoyed my little side arc in America zone with Erenville. Was probably my fave part in the expac tbh.
Just walking through, doing a little side story, chuckling at the american accents. I wish they woulda leaned more into the mad max stuff they had. Woulda been neat. Alas...

Appropriate that turret section using the gold saucer mini game and the expac’s quality improves by an order of magnitude.

I too enjoyed it, but my autsim was peeved at the general misuse of their native inspirations to the point where they just plop in the old time-ey american west town complete with oil wells somehow co-existing with a generic meso american civilization full of furries

- A lot of the NA voice actors that were used are friends with folks at SE. This isn't anything out of the ordinary, though I think it's worth noting that some folks might've had an 'in'
Literally the one bit of national pride I have is that UK voice acting tends to be so much better than US. I think it stems from the NA side being quite a lot more nepotistic with very few people taking all of the roles, and a decent amount of VAs here are rejected Broadway actors who've at least had some vocal training.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people were able to slip in as nepo-hires just because of the change to a US studio.

I got a little excited when it was revealed that it was just Erenville and my character. I was like “oh that dawn servant stuff was just one story and we’re beginning another!” Then it stopped just being me and Erenville.

Btw: it’s unofficial but Honey B, the character introduced like two days before the poll was put out, knocked Wuk Lamat out of the top ten in this popularity poll.

Finally cleared ex2 last night. I think it get's an easier rep than EX1 because most dps/healers can follow the leader through most of the mechs, but if you MT it's a bit spicy. Somehow, standing in markers for Conga filters more players than I could ever imagine.

Great fights all around though, now to farm them wangz.

Deserved. Hearing "I'll be your queen bee, honey B lovely" on repeat as your static malds is going to define this raid tier. Please look forward to it!

It’s bizarre because as a melee dps I’m the first after the tanks to get blown up but I’ve had like two vipers and a healer buzzing around and guess what? we’d keep wiping. The dps check isn’t even that bad

She was available because they left the capable Dawnservant to hold the fort down, so Wuk Lamat could go on adventurer fun-times.

Koana seems to be able to handle everything else while Wuk Lamat runs around the city telling everyone "I like peace"

I'm a bit torn on whether I should bother even paying attention to the story or just get to straight cutscene-skipping, though. Where I've heard nothing but good things about the actual content, I've heard nothing but bad things about almost every aspect of the story - and the EW postgame was so bad that I think I skipped the last third of all of it. I legit don't even know what happened to Zero and don't care.
You will suffer through it like the rest of us, you will sperg on the thread, you will have your two minute hate.

Or else.

Quality of PF bots dropped like a rock. The worst I've had in EX2 was a healer that'd park his ass on top of me with the bomb like 3 times in a row, despite being told exactly where to go, a couple of tanks that didn't think it'd be a good idea to mitigate the explosions (one of them was screeching something about being "legally blind" and "markers making it hard to see", which was pretty funny, and another one was some sort of "Legend", lol), and a RDM that'd gap close right into the line with predictible results. Now I wanted to farm EX1 a bit, maybe get the mount, and holy shit, it's so much worse, despite mechanics in EX1 being braindead easy. The worst thing is, both EX1 and EX2 are clearable with a bunch of grays, all you need to do is stay alive, and do *some* damage, but even that is too hard, apparently.

Hahahahahah holy shit, BLM is even worse than I thought
Once you have Flare, Blizzard 2 / High Blizzard 2 are literally skipped in the rotation. New players might think you're supposed to do B2->Freeze->F2->Flare, but that's way too complicated and difficult. To make the class more welcoming, the optimal route is now:
Transpose into UI1 -> Freeze -> refresh thunder / use xenoglossy -> transpose into AF1 & swift or triple -> (~firestarter F3?) flare x2, flarestar, repeat
Though, depending on the scenario, you may want to swift/triple for HF2 -> flare, which depends largely on how long you expect the trash pull to take

really really simple, very intuitive to once again have totally different aoe rotations based on your level range

There's only so much I can take each day. I started skipping in the... mezcal distillery level 90 quests after the fourth cutscene-walk 5 meters-cutscene chain wherein fucking nothing happened, so I have no real idea where I am now and I still don't care.

Noooooo, how else will I have my free two minute hate dissing on the story #849058306????

Jokes aside, it's funny to see BLM getting the short end of the stick for once. Another sign that YoshiP isn't involved.
