Final Fantasy XIV - Kiwi Free Company

but it's really funny how many times the characters unironically gush about "diversity" and "culture" and reduce the concept of learning history to just touring everyone's culture just long enough to respect it really hard until everyone is massively impressed by what a based Culture Respecter the cat lady is.
And then you remember this entire storyline with "muh melting pot of cultures" is written by japanese writers, for a japanese game, for a japanese studio.

You know - Japan- the country where 98% of the people residing there are ethnically and culturally Japanese, the literal ethnostate, is telling us about how good diversity is.

All I can say to that is lol, lmao.

On the flipside they did their homework in terms of art and the visual aspect of what they were going for, even the names for some locations you could think they are legitimate Quechua terms, the second map you enter is straight up bolivia, up to and including the giant fuck off mountain in the background.

For reference, one of those pics is Uroqpacha, the other is La Paz, Bolivia.

Wooks voice isn't as bad as it was in 6.x, but it still feels bad to listen to at times. The emotional range is not there, and feels very flat. Wuk as a character isn't bad per se but it lacks any sort of meat.

Holy shit, the first Trial is pretty sweaty if you're not playing with NPCs. The Extreme is going to be something.
For real. Besides the boss not telegraphing the aoe's after the first instance and you having to rely on visual animations, there's also the DPS check mid-way where while you have to dodge conal aoe's and burst down 3 adds, the boss relentlessly spams line stack aoe's until the adds are dead. You best pray someone doesn't get the idea to split from the group to kill a different add or deaths might slowly pile up.
Do really like this design though, but healers will have a rough time carrying mouthbreathers.

I was the healer for my party, with a paired SGE who as per usual couldn't have the mind to Esuna anybody, the worst when people got paralyzed left and right. I do admit to going from no dying to chain-dying thrice midway through the fight because I lost my nerve. Props to the tanks for staying strong.
I do want to say the fights this expansion are the fun sort of hard, the sort where you want to go back and redo them. At least that's me, usually I'm not like that.

So im hearing that Wuk Lamat wasnt as bad as people expected them to be and that the gameplay actually evolved from meh to decent or even good
The people hating on WL are either getting hung up on the trans english VA or have never watched any form of media with a dopey hot headed girl before. She's no worse than Lyse was.

The bigger issue with the story is
Bakool Ja Ja being a cartoon villain that seems to get away with a load of shit that should disqualify him from the competition. I don't remember them saying "anything goes" at the start. Feels like the Autarch would have stepped in and cut him down immediately after he released the giant bird that killed countless people.

Comparing WL to Lyse isn't a ringing endorsement, lol.

And I feel I've been pretty even-handed with criticism on WL, who constantly has the spotlight on her. The issue isn't with the type of character she is, or the troon VA, it's just how a lot of it is executed that is falling flat for me.

Bakool Ja Ja is a bit one dimensional, but up til he kidnaps WL he's more or less been abiding by the letter of the law. I assume he's just going to be the 'heavy' or 'punching bag.' Again, very rote and par for the course for JRPG characters, so not too surprising.

It's pretty easy to think this is a bad execution of that character archetype, shoddily shoehorned into the plot. Trying to reduce critics to being ignorant does not make your case well.

Massive mid-game spoiler:

WL FUCKING CUCKED HER BROTHER OUT OF A POSITION IN THE ADMIN??? Actual bitch move. No matter how much our character meant her brother is wayyyyy more an obvious choice.

EDIT... Never fucking mind!
