Having the chat be paid keeps the unemployed riff raff out. Also no spamming because people have skin in the game. I’m not paying for shit but I can still read and enjoy the high quality bants in the chat.

It spawns a background JS service worker for each stream, so ten new service workers when you load. Each one seems to set up a transmuxer from HLS.js. I don't know front-end stuff, but from the HLS readme:
It works by transmuxing MPEG-2 Transport Stream and AAC/MP3 streams into ISO BMFF (MP4) fragments. Transmuxing is performed asynchronously using a Web Worker when available in the browser. HLS.js also supports HLS + fmp4, as announced during WWDC2016.

It is defiantly built badly, you are probably still getting the data from all 10 streams on the login page even though you can't see them.
 
I do not understand the appeal of this. The same people watching this shit and actively discussing it are the people who, 2 years ago, would have laughed at you for watching gay ass reality TV shows on TLC or whatever.
