Flight Sims

I have a stupid but serious question. Is there a game that has real world, up to date maps, and like ww2 bombers? Because I'd like a game where I can go on a bombing run against my place of employment, and the local tax collector's office. Some days it would be nice to have such a game.
Closest thing would be probably the original two Microsoft Combat Flight Simulators, you could import the maps and aircraft from 98 & 2000 into 1 & 2 respectively. Granted given how old those are it's a very flat and barren version of the world, so wouldn't bother personally, but the option's there.

Microsoft used to make a game called Combat Flight Simulator set in World War 2 but they discontinued it a long time ago. Maybe they might resurrect it depending on how Flight Simulator does and it will give great competition against War Thunder and World of Warplanes.

There is also the Falcon 4.0 series and DCS as well but I believe they are not open world.

What are the first things you are going to do when the game goes live? Probably fly around my city or fuck around out west in the desert.

My Sims don't fly do I have to cheat or is it a lifetime ambition I haven't unlocked yet?

Regarding Flight Sims in general, did any of those games have a livery editor built-in to the game so you can create your own? It would be nice to make one of your own for an airline that doesn't use a particular plane, i.e. a Hawaiian Airlines livery on an Airbus A380.

And speaking of the A380, which Flight Sims have it?

I know FS2002 had a editor where you could like paste in created liveries and edit airplanes.

This boeing 737 brought back memories.

Outside of really basic shit pretty much no, you can do it mind you, but you're gonna be doing it the hard way with external software.

Included? None. As Add-ons? There's some freeware versions, but nothing particularly high quality exists.

Its officially out:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Microsoft Flight Simulator has been a fixture in the video game world for decades now, and the new 2020 iteration, out tomorrow, appears to be its best.

Reviews are in, and currently Microsoft Flight Simulator is the best scoring PC release of the year with a 94 on Metacritic, outscoring VR’s Half-Life: Alyx at 93 by a single point (albeit with 19 reviews in versus 68, so that may change).

The game is of course a “Microsoft exclusive” as it has that built into the name, but while an Xbox One release is planned (and Series X, no doubt), no date has been announced for a console release yet. But if you have Xbox Game Pass for PC, it does indeed include Microsoft Flight Simulator on launch day tomorrow, which is a pretty fantastic offering and reason #434 why everyone should probably have Game Pass at this point.

That 94 score ties Microsoft Flight Simulator with The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4 and puts it ahead of Xbox One’s highest score exclusive this year, Ori and the Will of the Wisps at a 90.

Obviously Microsoft Flight Simulator is a different sort of…game than 99% of other releases in a given year. It has a very, very, very niche audience, an extremely loyal, devoted one, but no, Last of Us or Ori players can’t really just hop on over into a Flight Sim and expect it to be a “game” in the same way, though reportedly this new version does have tools to make it more accessible for players at any skill level. It’s about realism to the point where actual pilot training for real planes can involve Microsoft Flight Simulator, and there’s really nothing else like it in the industry, short of maybe some of the higher end racing simulators.

Why is the game so good? Here’s IGN’s perfect score:

“The real-world mapping data, however, takes Microsoft Flight Simulator from being just an impressive game to the most awe-inspiring simulation I've ever experienced, in spite of its less than stellar load times. Seeing famous landmarks, landing at the world's most recognizable airports, or just touching down in a remote landing strip in South America is mind-bogglingly cool and an absolutely unparalleled way to virtually explore our world.”

Right now there’s only a single score below a 90, and that’s just one 87. If more perfect scores come in, this number could still go up, but we’ll have to see. Long-time sim players will love it, and the uninitiated may find it’s finally time to jump in and travel the world during a global pandemic that has disallowed that.

Given how the A380 hasn't been included in a Flight Sim yet, outside of mods, is there even a demand of players that want to fly it, that it would be worth licensing it as either a base-game airplane or paid DLC? Or is Airbus more of a hassle to license planes for games compared to other companies like Boeing? If it's the latter, it reminds me of how Toyota made a deal to not license their passenger cars for racing games, although Japanese-developed games like Gran Turismo were not affected by that decision.

Been having a great time with MSFS, despite the fact it's clearly still a work in progress. In particular the installer's fucking shit, took me a few restarts to get going, and I was on the lucky end as downloading went without much issue, others had even more trouble than I did as, that's probably the thing that need fixing most. Also some of the aircraft clearly need work, for example the Cessna Citation Longitude has way too little fuel and as a result can't fly as far as it should, I also don't believe the autopilot's speed hold works right now.

With that said still a lot stuff to like, no surprise at this point but really needs to be said the actual world's fantastic. Ai generate stuff while imperfect still does a great job at populating the world with buldings and trees all things considered, looks very convincing. Of course the handcraft airports are all very nice, really like the more extreme and middle of nowhere locations they've pick. Not to say the likes of Frankfurt are bad, but it's very fun to do see and do stupid shit in places like Lukla or Saba. The weather system's also great, like the wind in particular, it's great to actually have proper turbulence when flying around mountains, make it way more fun.

And while lots of aircraft need polish there's some that are pretty damn complete, from what I've played so far in particular either of the Cessna 172's and the TBM 930 are probably the standouts, have no complaints about either of them. Also would say all the cubs are great, in particular like the Shock Ultra and its stupidly short take off and landing. Also been liking the A320neo, fairly basic version of it sure, but what's there seems to function pretty well.

All in all I don't blame anybody for holding off for a while, again it needs work, but personally for what's here I think is pretty great as is.

There shouldn't be any licencing issues with Airbus, the A321 & A320neo both have been in installments of Microsoft Flight Simulator, so I don't believe it would've been hard to have a A380. Demand of players is probably much closer to the truth, generally speaking Boeing airliners tend to be a bit more popular with aviation enthusiasts, in particular the 747 tends to be a favorite.

I know everyone's been talking about FS2020 atm but I've been tinkering with FlightGear recently. It's a real pain in the dick to set up but it's FOSS and ideal for people who don't use Windows.

The game is pretty fucking amazing. I can only run it on medium at 1440p which takes a way a little of the realism but it's still near photo realistic in the cockpits and in the sky box. Terrain LOD can vary. First thing I did was fly from my home airport and see if I could spot the house I grew up in. It was there, although generically rendered the colors were right, as were the general layout of the trees on the property. Pretty fucking neat. I wish it came with more stock planes and TBH I don't even know if mods provide more or if I have to buy more. Guess I'll figure that out once I get into it more.

And as always, taking off is easy, landing is hard. My flight stick was not working with Windows 10 so I have to use the PS4 controller for PC, which is a bit of a bummer. I still haven't quite gotten the sensitivity right, especially on the trim buttons. The trim wheel on the flight stick was a lot easier than trying to use the buttons. I guess there is a reason most real pilots still prefer the yoke/stick.
