Former Cracker Barrel Hostess Says Employees Have 'Code Word' For Black People

A former hostess at an Arizona Cracker Barrel says the restaurant used a “code word” to refer to Black people, Newsweek reports. The former Cracker Barrel employee shared the news on TikTok, in a video that’s been viewed over 260,000 times.

In the 15-second video, TikToker @cinnamnhoney, said while she worked at Cracker Barrel, she’d often wonder how her coworkers would be able to identify a table of “Canadians” even if they didn’t have an accent. A few seconds later, she revealed that “Canadians” was actually code word for Black people.

“A waitress used to complain SO MUCH if i sat ‘canadians’ in her section & i was so confused bc i thought canadians were stereotyped as nice,” @cinnamnhoney, who’s name appears to be Kimmie, wrote in the caption, Comic Sands reports. [A]

The video’s comments were filled with users sharing similar experiences while working in the service industry.

“I had an old co-worker come and ask me if I saw the gang outside, it was a black family… ‘any group of 3 or more of them is a gang!’ he told me,” one user wrote.

“Absolutely ridiculous I remember this as a host. As well as “NIMS”. N words in my section. Some people don’t deserve even basic and common decency,” another person added.

Some people even said that the word “Canadian” is a common code for Black people in businesses.

“This happened to me too but at a water park I was a lifeguarding! I had NO idea,” Newsweek reports [A] one user wrote.

They continued, saying “the other lifeguards were saying ‘yeah I had to jump in after a Canadian.’ ‘Canadians can’t swim.’ And I said how do you know they’re Canadian.”

Cracker Barrel responded to the allegation, telling Newsweek that though they were unaware of the video at first, they would be “looking into the matter further.”

“We only recently learned about this video and have not had a chance to identify or speak with the relevant individuals. Obviously, racism has no place at Cracker Barrel and any actions like the ones described in the video would be against our policies, beliefs and who we are as a company,” a representative for Cracker Barrel said, according to Newsweek.

"Canadians"? Yeah sorry my bullshit detector is going off.
This is so old. People have been using the Canadians=niggers as a code word in restaurants since at least the 80's.
Niggers will run a server to death, and never, ever leave a tip. No tip at all, not even an inadequate shitty tip, unless they are being extra niggerish and leave you like a quarter or something. Then on top of that, they will always, ALWAYS try to complain about something to get comped by a manager.

This is a widely known fact in the restaurant industry, and has been for at least 25 years.

And if you think they treat white waiters poorly, just wait until you see how they treat their own. They'll treat a fellow black just like the slaves they wished they owned.

The last time I went to a Cracker Barrel the host was a very obviously gay black man, also I saw a Cracker Barrel commercial where the was an interracial couple and the end featured a montage of many different people sitting in that chair and the slogan "take care now"

It's 2004 again?

Wild.
I remember some news story about Cracker Barrel being racist from that year too.

And I remember my uncle joking "well it's called CRACKER Barrel after all, what do they expect?"

Man, I've talked to black servers and even they don't want "canadians" in their section.
It's funny how we can't just say "this is bad behavior and you should stop doing it"

Nobody has any qualms with saying the redneck mindset is shitty and people should be classier than that, but being black gives you a free pass for so much.

Whatever the biological factor of race is there's good behavior and bad behavior and everyone should be held to the same standards.

I had always heard of black tables being referred to as blacktops versus regular tables that were two tops of four tops (seat up to two versus four).

Black people have bad habit of not telling other black people to stop being assholes. That's why no one's allowed to talk about things like how black on black crime accounts for exponentially more deaths than the police.

For a real big shot of schadenfreude watch the Netflix documentary about who killed Malcom X; niggers will burn down cities because they THINK a white person did something to an "innocent" black man but one of their own murders one of their leaders and no one ever comes forward even decades later.

The closest I can think of to a black person calling this shit out was Chris Rock's old routine about black people and niggers.

He performed that bit like 20 years ago and no one listened. Now we have insecure niggers slapping people at the Oscars over a trifling ass ho like they were in the hood and someone's new sneakers got stepped on.

As a millennial I only knew about this bit of waitress/server/host culture because of shitty boomers I've had working under me over the years making casual mentions of it.

One of my buddies worked at a restaurant in high school, he told me they called black people tables "VIP tables". It's pretty funny how this seems like a universal thing in restaurants
Every job has codewords for things; good or bad, most bad though because they need a way to spread the word without it being an obvious/ Used to work at a casino and every division had their own codes for things; the hotel had codes for hookers, pimps, bed bugs, guests with a reputation (good or bad), etc. The restaurants all had their own codes too; even if you were back in the kitche, they'd never just flat out say "Table 3 is a bunch of drunk niggers who are most likely gonna try to skip out on their bill." I don't know how, but they could tell. They also had codes for people who wanted to be high-rollers and think they should be comped food without meeting their metrics, and codes for a lot of other shit. Every business has codes, mostly to not offend shit-head customers.

Don't be ridiculous. Everyone knows the only appropriate response to some fool steppin' on your new treads is to bust a cap in his ass.

Literally everyone in the restaurant business/hospitality knows that black people don't tip and they should be treated as such. Every profession has nicknames for troublesome customers/clients.
You'd think a place called CRACKER Barrel would be more forward with their derogatory language.
I forget who did it but a comedian had a bit about the Cracker Barrel. It basically was about having a restaurant for white people called the Cracker Barrel is like having a restaurant for black people called the Nigger Basket.

I never really thought about it but I can def recall hearing observations by the wait staff of "Canadians" a bit much even for snowbird territory.
