Former Cracker Barrel Hostess Says Employees Have 'Code Word' For Black People


A former hostess at an Arizona Cracker Barrel says the restaurant used a “code word” to refer to Black people, Newsweek reports. The former Cracker Barrel employee shared the news on TikTok, in a video that’s been viewed over 260,000 times.

In the 15-second video, TikToker @cinnamnhoney, said while she worked at Cracker Barrel, she’d often wonder how her coworkers would be able to identify a table of “Canadians” even if they didn’t have an accent. A few seconds later, she revealed that “Canadians” was actually code word for Black people.

“A waitress used to complain SO MUCH if i sat ‘canadians’ in her section & i was so confused bc i thought canadians were stereotyped as nice,” @cinnamnhoney, who’s name appears to be Kimmie, wrote in the caption, Comic Sands reports. [A]

The video’s comments were filled with users sharing similar experiences while working in the service industry.

“I had an old co-worker come and ask me if I saw the gang outside, it was a black family… ‘any group of 3 or more of them is a gang!’ he told me,” one user wrote.

“Absolutely ridiculous I remember this as a host. As well as “NIMS”. N words in my section. Some people don’t deserve even basic and common decency,” another person added.

Some people even said that the word “Canadian” is a common code for Black people in businesses.

“This happened to me too but at a water park I was a lifeguarding! I had NO idea,” Newsweek reports [A] one user wrote.

They continued, saying “the other lifeguards were saying ‘yeah I had to jump in after a Canadian.’ ‘Canadians can’t swim.’ And I said how do you know they’re Canadian.”

Cracker Barrel responded to the allegation, telling Newsweek that though they were unaware of the video at first, they would be “looking into the matter further.”

“We only recently learned about this video and have not had a chance to identify or speak with the relevant individuals. Obviously, racism has no place at Cracker Barrel and any actions like the ones described in the video would be against our policies, beliefs and who we are as a company,” a representative for Cracker Barrel said, according to Newsweek.

Tipping culture is a blight on society.

Waitstaff makes more money off of tips and it takes pressure off the restaurant's razor thin margins. There was a big thing a few years ago where celebrities were railing against tipping and a bunch of waitstaff flipped out and said they didn't want things to change.

Also, I've seen groups of dindus in restaurants. They're fucking animals: noisy, ignorant, and they trash the place 8 times out of 10. Tipping is only a small part of restaurant's staff issues with them.

I once invited coworkers to eat at a local bar to send off a friend leaving that job. Outside of a first round we all went dutch, and as a regular I paid attention to the tips. The white guys all tipped decently. The black team lead didn't tip shit. That shit opened my eyes up fast.

Years of experience taught them otherwise. They always treat them about the same as any other customer but there's only so many times you're gonna get run down by a bad tipping nigger family with an attitude before you say, "You know what, they really are different and the rumors were all true." Asians, a notoriously cheap people, will even tip, typically 15% to 17% to the exact penny like the autists that they are.

Like the early poster said, restaurants have razor thin profit margins, and many fail when they try to do their own thing rather than playing by the rules that have worked for a hundred years.

If it was as bad as you think for waiters, there would be no one to work these jobs. As it stands, they're making a few hundred a night bringing drinks and plates to a table and making small talk with people. Not a bad job.

Completely missing what I said. I am aware of how much money wait staff make from the tips and that's what I'm saying - that it shouldn't be there form of income. That they should be paid actual decent wages INSTEAD. Works in Europe and they're not at the mercy of the whims of the customer's mood or dependent on the kindness of their boss to make sure they're not stuck on bad tables the whole time. They show up, they do a good job, they get paid the agreed amount. As opposed to America where they show up, and have to bow and scrape in hopes of being graced with the patron's good mood. Also, takes out all the social discomfort from the equation.

Nowhere did I suggest that the customer should pay less, I said that the customer should pay a fixed amount and the wait staff should receive a fixed amount. If a customer wants to tip beyond that they can, but tipping culture is a bad way of paying for labour, imo.

Of course the counter argument would be that it lets the customer punish or reward depending on how good a job is done. But I don't really feel that balance of power works out in practice and typically bad staff would be weeded out without it.

This is a direct result of turning society into one where all power is invested in the state/bureaucracy. All gain shifts from being based on your own achievements and working with others, to appealing the most to the powers that be. Much like children in school appealing to teacher. A child getting in a fight in school today is not punished based on whether they were in the right or wrong, but on whether they go to teacher for redress. Children are being taught early that the way to get what you want is not to get it yourself, not to defend it yourself, but to get authority to do it for you.

American society is this, writ large.
