Presumably that means Antonelli is getting Hambone's seat. They don't want to make the Verstappen mistake again.

For those that don't know when Verstappen was kicking everyone's ass in F3.5, red bull and mercedes came with offers. Red Bull's was a seat in torro rosso, mercedes' was a reserve seat because they had Hambone and Rossberg on multi year contracts. That's widely believed to be the reason they kept giving lewlew 1 year contracts, to not close off the seat and end up losing talented rookies to those that have seats avaliable.

He’s only in 6th place in Formula 2 so far this year. Sargeant got 4th and de Vries won it and neither of them are anywhere close to being the second coming of Max. Antonelli’s wins are all in Formula Regional and F4 which aren’t the most competitive series.

There are a lot of drivers who look fast in slow cars and on the sim who suck in a fast car.

Yeah, me too, will love it if he is a huge flop, or even if he starts setting the world on fire and/or the Merc is a regular winning car in 2025 to make Lewis look like a fool for leaving.

The only issue I have with comparing Antonelli to those 2 is he is a rookie coming into a somewhat top tier team, unlike those 2 oafs you mentioned.

So, in a sense he should be compared to Lewis and Jacques who both were rookies that started in a top team. I don't know all Lewis' stats off top of my head, I know his first win was in Canada in his rookie year, but Jacques got pole in his first F1 race, finished 2nd, had 4 wins total and was in it for the WDC until the final race at Suzuka.

Given Mercedes is a "top" (at least not a bottom feeder team like Williams & Toro Rosso) team, realistically he should score points regularly, maybe get a podium or 3 and possibly nab a win. If he doesn't do that, then I would consider his debut a flop, if you look at what Lewis and Jacques did in their first seasons with a "top" team.

Schumi, Alonso, Vettel AND Max are others who entered F1 with a shit team and didn't immediately win or get podiums, but look at what they accomplished later in career.

I agree, the jury is out on Kimi who could, as I said previously, be a new Waffel, or Logan or Nyck, Hartley, or so many other highly touted drivers who were absolutely garbage in F1. But unlike most, he is joining a team that has won multiple titles recently, and while not top 3 regularly, can snipe a podium or possible win if they pull another Montreal this year.

Unless in 2025 Mercedes suddenly becomes a bottom 4 team, Kimi *should* do enough to impress as he will have a car to mask if he is a crappy driver in F1 terms.

People keep saying that, but the thing is, it doesn't matter, as much as it's correct. Yes, Colton's not turning out to be super great as people thought then. But what matters was what people thought then.

Just want to throw it in here: Ferrari won the 24 Hours of Le Mans again but this time with car 50, while car 51 the winner from last year, got 3rd place. Race was close but they also had a damn long safety car phase through the night due to rain and one Cadillac generously spreading oil on track. Mick Schumacher also took part but both Alpines only lasted around 4 to 5 hours before the engines gave out. And lastly a good feeling story: a small Italian team called Isotta Fraschini came with their own car and managed to finish in P14 with 9 laps down

The superlicense is fucking gay. We have Wikipedia and YouTube now. We don't need the fia to tell us if a guy is capable of driving a car or not. Autistic Stat trackers and film afficiandos of some of the most niche racing series in the smallest who the fuck cares crevice of the continet have replaced the fia for free. In the 80s and 90s it made sense but it's just stupid now. So much stats and footage exists for absolute every racing series and driver there is right now. Big small talented shitter. Also between how much more driveable modern cars are and the advancements and simulation. The idea that there's some barrier to entry for f1 that's impossible to reach in less you amass proper points in these specific fia affiliated series is kinda goofy. I know that's part of the reason the super license exists now but it is very obvious that that's probably the only reason it exists now.

Especially when every weekend it seems like all but a handful of guys driving in f1 actually look like they should be. There are multiple shitters with 10 years or close to 10 years of experiences whose racecraft has never gotten any better driving in f1.

Give the indy car dudes a fair shake at least. They need the least prep when it comes to the speed and forces especially. I get it from a buisness perspective but from a skill standpoint and preparedness feels like most of the dudes would take to it fine. Ar leats half the the indy grid would do no better or no worse than the bottom 10 in f1.

Also Bernie was right with the sprinkler idea. Canada was sick.

I don't know if Antonelli will live up to the hype or not, but I certainly would not be expecting him to match the results of Hamilton or Villenueve in his first year of F1.

I expect Russell will have a clear upperhand on him.

Hamilton had almost an entire season’s worth of testing in the real car before his first race. Kimi won’t get that.

Also, I just saw that Aston Martin allegedly gave Newey a tour of the factory and that all employers were advised to stay away so no detail leaks. If true there will be details soon I'd wager because leaks will always happen.

Added to that, you've got Euro 2024 semi-final matches on the evening of the Friday and Saturday. That might deter people from making plans to watch practice and qualifying - the thought that England might get through and they might be nowhere near a screen to watch it.
