In the United States, it's frowned upon to kill the fox. It's just an excuse to drink and dress up and then get on a horse and keep drinking while dangerously running through wooded and hilly areas. We realize that foxes have a natural order and take care of many vermin species for us, and so the goal is to chase the fox without letting the hounds get within killing distance. It's even more exciting when the hounds get on a coyote trail because those they do kill and everyone gets to have a fun story at the post hunt drinking party.

Basically we're the more educated and empathetic hunters unlike those snaggletoothed barbarians across the sea.

Its fun watching these metro-trendies ree over stupid shit again.

Up in Scotland the fox population actually dipped dangerously low because, rather than the pomp and circumstance of the hunts which keps the populations somewhat stable (and money into the coffers of farmers and land owners who hosted them) they instead swapped out for packs of roving jocks on quad bikes with shotguns, which not only made the foxes die slower, more agonizing deaths, but also meant that a day hunting could net ten foxes instead of the one/two it normally did.

Interestingly, most foxes die pretty much instantly when the dogs catch them as they impulsively go for the scruff of the neck where many nerve endings are, biting through it and thus killing the fox pretty much instantly.

Coyote's otoh are shit to hunt with dogs because the rabies incidence in that species is pretty high.

That said, my next dog is totally going to be a Fox Hound because every single one I have met has been a great dog
