Well at least we can rest assured there will always be one operating system that won't succumb to flat design, ever:
TempleOS?

But man do I miss the the optimism and bright future this style used to have. The flat minimalist shit now is just so depressing and devoid of life. Would a bit of 3D or some gloss kill graphic designers now days?

There are all kinds of studies how even a single extra click required in an interface can drive away users and reduce line-go-up. Because of this, interfaces must be made as retarded as possible, for the blackest, milkiest, most easily spooked niggercattle.

In UI/UX, the biggest question to ask is “is this enough voodoo? Or too little voodoo?”

You can make the most clusterfuck UI and people wouldn’t understand it. The opposite is true as well.

I refuse to call it "Frutiger Aero" since it's a retarded neologism that can't even decide where it starts and where it ends.
Call me a snob, but I'd say the one on the right is uninspired. You can't just slap your celebrity crush on a skin and call it a day. Make it a real theme.
It's because those old Winamp 1.x/2.x skins were just bitmap hopscotches, the UI was rigid. They were so trivial to make that you had skin generators that's overlay generic UI elements over an image of choice. Personally, I find the Bunker skin the most creative out of all the classic skins.

A ton of detail realized by clever bitmap tricks. Then Winamp 3 happened and people weren't too happy as IIRC initially it completely replaced the classic skins, was heavier and a whole bunch of other issues. But it did allow for some very creative skins. I was really fond of the ZDL skins with their fully animated reel-to-reel tapes for example.

However the skin that I absolutely adore to this day is MMD3. Made by the same guy who would then make the Winamp Modern Skin for Winamp 5, it actually predates it and IMO it's a much more iconic and creative skin.

To me, MMD3 was the pinnacle of Winamp skins. However nowadays I do appreciate the flexibility and functionality of foobar2000. While the old Winamp skins were very pretty, they were rigid and restrained, meanwhile foobar2000 took Winamp's Bento concept and made it freely adjustable.

By the way, if you want to relive your Winamp nostalgia, I used WACUP for these skin presentations. It's a project led by the old Winamp dev that aims to rewrite the entirety of Winamp, improving stability and functionality on modern systems. It does however likes to crash with these old modern skins from time to time so YMMV.
Nothing beats Windows Aero.
IMO Vista was the peak of Windows visuals. It had more contrast and, let's call it "positive visual noise" going on compared to 7, and the Aero glass design was the perfect balance between corporate cleanliness and the Y2K era skeuomorphism. When I recently installed it on my old PC I really felt the nostalgia. It's a shame 8 happened and Windows' fate was sealed from there, and we were all forced to either accept it or move to Linux, both being subpar options. Even though 7 is still better than modern Windows and modern Linux combined.

You'll find a vast searchable repository of these styles in the Winamp Skin Museum. For instance, I hit the random skin button and it brought me this first try:

Sure you'll find plenty that are just Weird Al or Buffy the Vampire Slayer's face, but there is a lot of cool shit in there. They're all interactable as well. Look at it and know that this is what itunes, spotify, etc took from you. I still wish I could find the coolest visualizer I lost nearly 25 years ago in an HDD crash.

There was that old windows media player that had the dopest visualizer. I tried looking for it years ago and gave up.

I miss the designs from the 90s and 2000s. These days, it’s all ugly art and mimic whatever Apple is trying to do.
Even Apple in that era took risks on hardware. I took out my old eMac from storage and I'm surprised how futuristic the design still feels despite it being a CRT behemoth, and I like the look and feel of older OSX with the Aqua design, feels more natural than the iOS amalgamation they are trying to pull off.

I have only recently become acquainted with the term Frutiger Aero and I hate it. both Y2K futurism and quote-unquote Frutiger Aero are the aesthetics of corporate marketing slop just like Corporate Memphis is today. it all sucks, it's all gay, the only difference is that the older shit is part of your childhood. in 10-20 years alphas will be waxing nostalgic about Corporate Memphis and whatever you consider the "soulless" designs of today while you mumble angrily about how Frutiger fucking Aero was the peak aesthetic era.

in my mind, the Aero design (debuted with Windows Vista lmao) will forever symbolize a big step in Microsoft's prioritizing style over substance. Windows 95, 98, XP, etc. were all to some degree products designed to visually entice the user as a form of marketing. but 2000 feels like the last version of Windows where MS still felt some kind of obligation to deliver a consumer-friendly OS (if you're about to correct me by saying Windows XP, you've clearly never spent an hour on the Microsoft support line trying to convince a fucking procession of pajeets to let you boot Windows again because you changed out a faulty motherboard). everything since then has been an increasingly rancid pile of shit with an increasingly thick layer of glossy fake-smiling corporate marketing aesthetic. Vista is a perfect microcosm of that. WinXP - after it got patched 500000000000000000 times - worked fine. it didn't need to be fixed. but MS needed to keep selling copies of Windows as always, so along came the inevitable Next Version, and what's this? its primary feature is that it just looks prettier? the start menu has been redesigned to be less functional? also driver compatibility for all your devices has been broken yet again, and half your software now suffers from arcane runtime issues. just like with Win2K and XP when they launched! how nostalgic. except Vista never got fixed, it just got papered over with Windows 7, which was only slightly better until it got patched 500000000000000000 times. and that's the era people are nostalgic for now. every time I sat down in front of a computer with that fucking Aero desktop, I felt a quiet rumbling of existential dread. but now the kids that spent their time fucking around in the cursed Games Explorer on the family computer have grown up and all they remember is haha shiny thing go beep boop. just like purble place dude!! this is like my childhood man!!! let's make art and music about it. thankfully the nostalgia art movements are far cooler than the original shit ever was.

God I fucking miss Windows 7 so much (:_(

reformat your Windows drive, install whatever flavor of Linux you think looks best. get one with KDE or Cinnamon, or GNOME if you like the macOS look. spend a little time browsing window and icon themes and jazz it up how you like. free yourself from Microsoft's AIDS. you can have the desktop you want, today. you can have it without ads, without spyware recording everything you do, without Microsoft's gay licensing system hanging over your head and deciding whether or not you're allowed to use your own computer. and you can have it for free.
