No, their spines can't handle the weight of saddles (and especially not the person sitting on them). Riding elephants is awful and incredibly harmful to their backs. Given how unexpectedly weak their spines are, basically any elephant outside of a zoo gets fucked over a bit. Once an elephant has adjusted to being around people they're very docile and even playful. It's even been shown in studies that elephants can actually develope very close attachments with humans very easily.
