Funimation's Early Days - A History - A look into the past of Funimation up until DBZ's mainstream success on American television

It's one of things that's so terrible about NetFux bastardizing smaller fan-loved properties, the overall subscriptions are what determines success, not the quality of shows. They can dump out DeathNote 2017 and Cowboy Bebop as if they were tax write-offs, alienate a large subgroup of fans, yet feel no dent in their bottom line from the backlash. Soyny being based in Commiefornia is another disability, which is why their tax write-off tripe still has a rainbow flag.

They're over for Sentai too seeing as they just got bought by AMC. The biggest independent US anime publisher now, in terms of both of manpower and output, is Discotek Media.
Discotek regularly hires faggots from ANN to write liner notes and dub commentary tracks for various products, and it has not gone unnoticed by fans. One of their more recent fuck ups (which does tie back to funimation) is their release of the Lupin tv special "Secret of Harimao's Treasure" had an unskippable disclaimer telling the audience how transphobic the dvd they just bought is and they should be ashamed of themselves. It went over as well as you'd think with the Lupin crowd, and as far as I'm aware their revenue have been on a slow but steady decline since.

It's beyond that, their discs are authored by a woke ANN faggot who wanted Vic to hang. It's ANN faggotry across the board there. I'd honestly buy a Funimation disc again before I ever thought about buying something from Discotek. It's unfortunate that happened to Discotek, I don't know if they started out that way before they started releasing Blu-rays, but it's what they became. So just go back to downloading torrents. They will look as good as anything these stupid asses put out.

What scene got them so upset? Does it really say "you should feel ashamed" or is it just a disclaimer saying the views expressed within are not those of Discotek?

It's Justin Sevakis you're talking about.

Actually once considered myself a fan of his, he did turn me on to some interesting anime I had never heard of before, though I knew he was always kind of douchey, but still came as a surprise just how big a prick he turned out to be.

I witnessed him being a humongous prick and extremely petty eons-long grudge holder back in the olden days, so it didn't come as a surprise to me. Everything bad about ANN started with him, and he's definitely one of the conspirators behind this Vic bullshit. He's an awful disgusting human being imho.

Thread on faggot who worked on dvd reeeing about the nazi in drag: https://archive.md/sIEqH
Particular post which features screencap of disclaimer: https://archive.ph/9mMDX

Reminds me of the homo who almost killed themselves because they couldn't censor Trails in the Sky SC.

And hopefully the trend of Lupin licenses going elsewhere continues, because I won't be buying them otherwise.

Once you brush the nostalgia aside, you realize funi has always been shitty. They just got the right licenses at the right time. No DBZ no funi. I remember when I started watching the sub. Of dragonball goku is almost a different character. Funi made him some superhero bent on fighting for good against evil, when in reality goku just wants to fight strong opponents & get stronger himself. It was pretty obvious that the only thing allowing funimation to stay in business was dragonball. Look how many different versions & box sets they kept releasing.

On a side note; anyone kind of dreading OG Dragonball ever getting a re-release by Funimation? The original series is long out of print and hasn't even aired on TV since the early 00s Cartoon Network run.

I shudder how they would handle the re-release of the first arc, given the amount of sexual humiliation Bulma suffers and Roshi in general given how his perverted side is a huge aspect of his character pre-DBZ. Not to mention Blue Shogan/Commander Blue, a Nazi pedophile and Chi-Chi being a marriage obsessed stalker who spends her appearances in DB stalking Goku to force him to marry her.

I watched the Chucky Cheese thing for 5 seconds starting at a random time, and see this part out of any other part I could have seen

I always knew he was a deeply cynical person, so it shouldn't be too big of a surprise he went Woke, scratch a Wokster and you'll find a bone deep cynic underneath who secretly hates people no matter how much they virtue signal about "being kind to others"

And other weird stuff like him talking about in his Only Yesterday review how much he hated to look at pictures or videos of himself as a kid, he was clearly a dude with some problems, but he was at least a pretty decent critic.

Not really, Funimation was never my favorite but they used to be a perfectly fine publisher, their dvd covers were almost always attractively designed and it really can't be understated how impressive their dub of Fullmetal Alchemist was.

Really? It's never aired on US television since the early 2000s? I find that a bit surprising.

What do you think? They would butcher it or just never bother to re-release it at all.

Forget the perversion, they'd have to pull a Viz and digitally remove the donut lips on the nigger henchman from one of the early arcs, then do it again for Mr. Popo. Imagine that being your daily grind for a month. Hell, loli Chi-Chi's battle bikini outfit alone would be an insane undertaking to censor.

Yeah; for some reason Funimation won't re-release it. Hell, even Dragon Ball GT briefly returned to TV when DBZ Kai first came out, on Nicktoons of all places. And in stores, GT is still in print and can be seen in big department store chains with DBZ, the DBZ Kai edit, Super, and various movie box sets but Dragon Ball remains OOP and lost media.

Discotek are interesting in their own right. They started out releasing extreme Asian films such as Splatter: Naked Blood, Ebola Syndroma, Star of David: Hunting for Beautiful Girls and Sexual Parasite: Killer Pussy alongside their anime releases. They may not release much live action stuff nowadays, but they do release fanservice series such as Miss Machiko, Kiss x Sis, Angel's 3 Piece and Strike the Blood. They only do these warnings depending if the series has a character that is Nazi, gay or trans. For the Lupin special, they even mention the "punch a nazi" meme twice on the back of the box.

There's a fair amount of troons/fags working for the company. Noelle Siddall works on translation and makes sure to "fix" anything deemed homophobic or transphonic. Kashimashi ~Girl Meets Girl~ has revised subtitles that are "careful of gender and pronouns" for a show about a guy turned into a girl by aliens. Angel Cop has a warning screen when you start the disc and includes an essay written by ANN contributer Todd Ciolek describing the rise in anti-semitism in Japan. The blu-ray gives you the option of censored or uncensored subtitles. The subtitled version of Samurai Pizza Cats omits the gay/okama jokes in the series. Vs Knight Lamune & 40 Fresh, an ecchi spin-off OVA had "update(d) the subs for to bring the terms/tone in line with our other Lamune titles." David Miranda does film restoration under the name "FemboyFilms" and works for Discotek. Kaelan Ramos, who is part of the FGC and won the Sailor Moon S fighting game tournament in 2019 aslo works for Discotek. He recently quote tweeted Niche Gamer's Brandon Orselli and painted him as a "Make Anime Great Again" guy because anime was literally advertised as "Not for Children" thanks to AD Vision, Central Park Media, Manga Entertainment and Streamline Pictures back in the day.

At least the disclaimer there is on-par with the Warner Bros. disclaimers in that they still decided to preserve it despite racist depictions. That the Blu-Ray gave the option of censored or uncensored subtitles is interesting, but Angel Cop is an interesting case to begin with in terms of anime preservation since its dub censored itself back in the day anyway. Giving proper subtitles for the first time ever in a Western release honestly was a big deal.

Writing an essay about anti-semitism in Japan for the DVD/Blu-Ray release is fucking gay, though. Writing essays for anything Discotek Media released is a sign of faggotry, period. They don't even cite their sources, you're supposed to just take their word for it.

The biggest thing about Discotek that should be a meme but isn't is that lots of their contributors are doing it for free. I know Justin is being paid but even with him, there's a heavy implication that he's putting in more work than he's being compensated for. That's probably why they attract so many weird fucks. If you're looking to underpay people you're not going to be choosy about what they post on social media. Imagine any non-porn entertainment company humoring something named Femboy Films.

It gets really funny when you consider that a bunch of them are ardent Twitter leftists who decry workers being taken advantage of. They're busting their balls making releases that enrich a literal Florida man whose personal politics might not be right wing, but are almost certainly not as left as they are.

Remember when this thread was about the early years of Funimation?
To bring it back around, I wonder how many personnel from those days are still around?
I'm not talking about Chris Sabat, Sean Schemmel, etc. I'm talking about the people who are the nuts and bolts of the company.
They probably have some stories to tell.

It's definitely worth looking into. Carly Hunter probably has tons of stories. She was one of the first people hired at Funimation during the early days and was one of the two main producers at the company alongside Justin Cook after Barry Watson and Daniel Cocanougher stepped down as producers. She would later be married to Chris Sabat for a few years until they divorced. Carly was basically how Sabat first got involved with Funimation when they went in-house for the dubbing.

Afterwards, Barry Watson would go on to start a company called Illumitoon Entertainment that licensed a few anime titles before it collapsed in the late 2000s and hasn't been active in the industry since. It's unknown what Daniel did afterwards but his father Allen, the initial investor of Funimation, passed away in 2017.
