Holy shit what a night:

After leading 2x0, Inter Miami enters the stage of [MOST DANGEROUS LEAD], And Palmeiras managed to get 2 goals and stays on the first place of the group, sending Inter to PSG, meanwhile a Brazilian duel will happen. One of the most intense and important of the last few years, now at the world level.

And in the Porto vs Al Ahly, a game with 8 goals, where we could see the duel of the [LITERALLY WORST OFFENSE] of Al Ahly vs [LITERALLY WORST DEFENSE] of Porto. As you could imagine, it was equal 4x4, even when Al Ahly was clearly way better.

A great night today. Man, this tounment is so fucking fun

Credit where it's due, FIFA hit a huge jackpot organizing this big Club World Cup. And as silly as they can get, the US knows damn well how to host this kind of huge events.

Now, if they were a bit smarter, they would consider ditching the idea of hosting the opening matches of the 2030 World Cup in different South American countries before crossing the Atlantic Ocean and instead give the 2029 Club World Cup to them. The atmosphere for footy matches down here is incomparable. Imagine Barcelona having to duke it out against a random team from Asia in Asunción or Santiago del Estero, for example.

A few countries already saw the writing on the wall and already presented candidacies to host the next CWC. Brazil seems like a favorite since we will host the Women's World Cup in two years time, but who knows. We're not exactly in the best economical situation at the moment.

This was done so the way for Saudi Arabia was free to get the 2034 WC. FIFA has introduced a rotation system for who is eligible to get the WC. With giving a few matches to CONMEBOL members (Argentinia, Paraguay, Urugay) and the rest two UEFA members (Spain, Portugal) and to one CAF member (Morocco) all three continents were out for the race to get the 2034 WC. So for 2034 only AFC and OFC members were eligible. Obviously the OFC wouldnt get the WC bc where the fuck are they supposed to organize the biggest football tournament in the world?

The only OFC member that might get a WC is probably New Zealand and that's it. None of the other member is anywhere close to being able to host such a tournament.

So with the OFC basically out of the way and the rest of the associations also out of the way bc of the 2026 and 2030 WC only the AFC was left. And with that the deal for Saudi Arabia was basically already done bc 1. there weren't any other bids from other AFC members, 2. FIFA sped up the bidding process and 3. FIFA already had gotten bid from Saudi Arabia way before they should have been able to throw their hat into the ring.

All of this was done on purpose so the Saudis could get the WC. FIFA is not going to ditch any stupid bullshit.

I can't wait until Pepi is back with the USA. Agyemang plays like he's running on ice. (even though he did score a goal the last game)

Palmeiras vs. Botafogo
PSG vs. Inter Miami
Benfica vs. either Chelsea or Espérance Tunis (whoever wins goes through, but Chelsea has the tie advantage)
Flamengo vs. Bayern Munich

Some wonderful confrontations already for the Round of 16.

Also, Boca Juniors could not win against a literal bunch of amateurs and part-timers from New Zealand. Among their ranks, they had a pool cleaner, a car washer, a barber, an unemployed college student, and their sole goal was scored by a beginner teacher.

River Plate need some serious help from Urawa Reds or they might go out. They play Inter who are also on 4 points while Monterrey are on 2. Should be interesting to see if both Argentinian teams get eliminated in the group stage
Olympique Lyon got relegated to Ligue 2 bc the club is broke as fuck and the LFP had enough.
Textor is selling his share of Crystal Palace to the New York Jets owner for 190 million pounds. He is definitely using this to appeal the decision to be relegated. Europa League and some more cash investment might hold off an issue right now. Its amazing that Lyon have had zero money, forced to sell their best players, and still made Europe

You know what the situation is with Sargent? Haji Wright is getting selected by the USA despite having similar stats? I guess the main difference is that Wright is far better at time wasting.

Everyone is glazing South American teams and fans but I was very impressed by Al-Ahly, this was a weaker team by their standards. I imagine they'll be stronger next time.

I think Pochettino just simply didn't call Sargent up for the Gold Cup, no injury that I know of. He hasn't scored a goal for the USA since 2019, so that might have something to do with it.... Wright is injured now though.

Like most here I've been pleasantly surprised by the quality of some of the matches for the CWC. It's still very obviously a money grab tournament from FIFA but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying PSG and Chelsea realising that South American teams aren't the complete walkovers they and their fans thought they would be.

Also lol Boca drawing to literal part timers from New Zealand. :story:

I was curious and started looking into the OFC members and their top leagues.

First stop is Amercian Samoa. That's the standing of the last season in 2024.
1750845766310.webp
The 2024 season lasted from July 27th til November 27th so I assume the 2025 will happen in the same window then. Anyways, Pago Youth scored an average of 9.9 goals per match. Surprisingly the worst defence isn't been found within the team that ranked last. It's Lion Heart with 170 conceided goals in 20 matches, that's 8.5 on average.

Couldn't find any information on the league on Cook Islands. Not even sure if they have a regular league. They seem to have some clubs but couldn't find any info, not even on the official homepage of the CI association.

The Fiji top league is surprisingly mild. Or low energy? Or balanced? At least judging by the standings for the 2024 season (the 2025 season is still going on).
1750846784281.webp
The worst team conceided 43 goals in 18 matches, that's ~2.39 on average which isn't that bad. The best team scored 45 goals in 18 matches which is 2.5 goals/per match.
Fiji Premier League was established in 1977 and Ba is the best team with 21 championships so far but they only ranked 5th last season. This season they are 3rd at the moment after 10 matchdays.

Next is Kiribati and they don't even play every year. Sometimes there is a gap of a year, sometimes it's 2 years, sometimes it's 3 years, sometimes nobody knows what's even going on. Wtf.
1750847463828.webp

Ok, so New Caledonia has a top league but I can't find any league standings. Wikipedia only lists every season's winners and that's it. Other sources I checked have even less information (Zero. Other sources provide zero information on the New Caledonian top league.).

So let's move to New Zealand then. I was looking into the NZ league system a few days ago, when the club WC started and I got confused by it. Auckland FC seems to play in two different leagues and they seem to have two men's teams but also not and there are different leagues where clubs play to qualify for the top league which sounds like some sort of relegation but it's not a relegation system and somehow everybody plays everbody but also not and I just gave up. Oh, and one team, the Western Phoenix Reserves, also get's it's spot in the top league safe every year bc reasons I guess. The "New Zealand National League" seems to be the official top league but was only established in 2021.
1750848115883.webp
At the end of the season the two top clubs play a final match to crown the league winner. Auckland FC won that match for the 2024 thus they are the champions.
Again, the league looks pretty mild. But then again, how much can things escalate if you only have 9 matches to play?

Papua New Guinea got their top footy league only back in 2006. And they seem to have several seasons to be played delayed bc lack of interest from teams, spectators, sponsors and everyone else but also bc nature seems to fuck them up here and there. Oh, and one player once died bc he got kicked in the fucking stomach and then you just fucking die bc healt care seems to be fucking vodoo magic in Papua New Guinea. Out of 17 seasons played the PNG super duper premier league saw astonishing two teams securing the championship. They play a regular season and then have a little knockout tournament where the best teams play. Winner get's crowned as champions of the season.

Samoa has the Samoa National League and they have one fucking stadium for the whole league to play in.
1750848879418.webp
Apparently it seems to be closed for renovation so I guess no league then? More detailed information is sparse.

Next is the Solomon Island S-League, also known as Telekom S-League bc sponsor reasons, and they actually play just a normal, regular season.
1750849267796.webp
And the 2024 standings look like a normal, regular season. Neat.

And then there is Tahiti ...
1750849465497.webp
:story:

The Tonga Major League looks like this:
1750849651415.webp
Uhm, ten teams but every team plays only one match per season? Huh? That can't be real. That's how the 2019 season looked in the end:
1750849782806.webp
I don't know what happened there in 2024 bc again, information is sparse so let's move on to Tuvalu.

1750849992320.webp

1750850051801.webp

Oh boy.

So it looks like they have a league but I can't really find an info on how the league works. But they have a lot of cups on Tuvalu. Like a league cup, the Independence cup to celebrate the independence of Tuvalu, the National Bank of Tuvalu cup sponsored by the National Bank of Tuvalu, the Taganoa cup, the christmas cup and then there are the mighty Tuvalu Games! All I could find out is it's all the different islands doings sports against each other where they also play football and people get wasted on island moonshine.

Last but not least is Vanuatu. Looks like they have three leagues but I can't really find any further information on how relegation works. At the end of their season the top four clubs of the top (?) league play a little tournament and the winner plays in the OFC champions league.

To end this little trip around Oceania and their leagues here is the current standing of all OFC members and their men's national teams in the FIFA world ranking:
1750851087100.webp
OFC doesn't have provide the worst men's national team bc it's UEFA with San Marino (#210).

Godspeed to all the island dwellers and their leagues :semperfidelis:

I mean, this is the Gold Cup right before the World Cup, so nobody takes is seriously. If the US doesn't at least make it to the finals, then I hope half this team doesn't see an international call up until 4 years from now

Obligatory.
It also has to be mentioned that Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands are the only independent nations in the OFC where association football is the most popular sport

Mexico wants to fancy itself as King of Concacaf and being so beneath it, but very rarely do they avoid shitting the bed when faced with CONMEBOL foes. Shit, CONCACAF has caught up with El Tri.

Speaking of other teams with greater sense of worth than actually merited, RiBer Plate is eliminated from the Club World Cup.

I expected Boca to not make it in a group with Benfica and FC Bayern. But River not making the cut too? lol, especially after all the banter from River fans I saw on the internet towards Boca for only getting a draw against the amateurs from Auckland. You have to love it.

Looking at these brackets I guess the semi-finals will be Man City vs Chelsea on the left and P$G vs Real on the right.
