FC Bayern and Thomas Tuchel to end collaboration in the summer

FC Bayern Munich and head coach Thomas Tuchel have jointly decided to end their collaboration, which was originally due to run until June 30, 2025, on June 30, 2024. This is the result of an amicable discussion between CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and Thomas Tuchel.

Jan-Christian Dreesen, CEO of FC Bayern: "In an open, good discussion, we have come to the decision to end our collaboration by mutual agreement in the summer. Our aim is to take a new sporting direction with a new coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every individual at the club is expressly called upon to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. I also explicitly hold the team accountable in this regard. In the Champions League in particular, we are convinced that we will reach the quarter-finals in our packed Allianz Arena with our fans behind us after losing 1-0 in the first leg at Lazio Roma."

Thomas Tuchel: "We have agreed that we will end our collaboration after this season. Until then, I will of course continue to do everything I can with my coaching team to achieve maximum success."

Thomas Tuchel took over from Julian Nagelsmann as coach of FC Bayern in March 2023. Just over two months later, he celebrated winning the German championship with the club.

Alright time to start betting on who they are gonna replace Tuchel with:

personally, I think they should go with a younger guy and give him some time to develop a new team. They have a team of older guys who need to be moved on and have new talent come through.

But this is bayern, so I bet they will get some other guy who will fuck things up

Agreed. I have a weird candidate, this will never happen (at least now), but it should be considered: Fabian Hürzeler.

He's the coach at St Pauli right now (has only been there 14 months as head coach). I think the club has only lost 3 times 4 times in those 14 months though, including recently only once this season in 2 Bundesliga and also recently in the DFB Pokal (notably going further than Bayern, losing to Fortuna Düsseldorf on penalties in the quartfinals). St Pauli have been on fire since he took over, almost getting to promotion last season (they finished 5th but were in range of promotion after a rough start, winning 10 straight before finishing 3-2-2), and they have been atop the table nearly all year this year.

He worked his way up with the Communists St Pauli quickly, coming on as an assistant in the 20/21 season. Before that he spent one year as a low level player coach and a couple of seasons with the Deutsch u20 and u18 teams. BUT... he was a product of Bayern, from 2008-2013 working his way up through the Bayern youth system before ultimately only spending a season with FC Bayern II (in 3. Liga, if my timeline is right). He then bounced around a couple of mid level teams (including 1860 München II) before retiring at like 23... to start coaching.

I'll admit, there is a big difference between coaching even a 2 Bundesliga team and coaching Bayern. To borrow an exemplar from another sport, you almost need a Phil Jackson type coach, who can not only innovate on the pitch but also manage the personalities. The flip side, Bayern management are always going on about wanting to develop their product, and while he has gone elsewhere, it would be a nice narrative. I'll also admit, I have no idea what it would take to get him from the commies St Pauli, or even if he'd want to coach at Bayern (or prefer to face the challenge of the Bundesliga with the team he helped to promote), but the narrative and potential is there.

Agreed. It's going to be someone (like a Zidane) who has had success elsewhere, but will be yet a different and new culture clash with the players and fans.
Edit: fixed a fact error

See now this is a good shout. If they hired him and gave him 2-3 years to develop a new squad, I would be worried about the Bundesliga.

Mourinho for the ultimate lulz
This however, would ruin Bayern for a few years

The protests worked!

I think that's a good shout @DSP's Tax Lawyer @Dixieland Buckaroo but since when do clubs give managers 2 - 3 years to sort things out. Maybe I'm jaded but it always seems like managers at bigger clubs come and go
It is rare to see that level of patience at any level of professional sport these days. I mean, here's a list of Bayern's coaches since 2010:

*Assumes he serves out contract
^ caretaker

Excluding caretakers, the average run for a Bayern coach is just under 600 days, so typically being let go mid-season. (Although 4 did serve out the year, including a caretaker.) I'm sure for other top clubs it's similar.

There hasn't been a need for Bayern to be patient. They had a group of talent that competed for Europe at a high enough level since they lost to Inter in 2010. I can't look into it too much, but how long did they have coaches prior to the 2009 season? That would be a good tell since they might be in a similar situation where making the quarter finals is a success. I don't think it will be the levels of 2006/07 where they don't qualify for the champions league but its not going to be a guaranteed win anymore.

FYI the UEFA Cup (europa league's predicessor) was wild for bayern. They won a group of 5 teams, with every team only playing each other once. Their group was Bayern Munich, Braga, Bolton Wanderers, Aris, and Red Star Belgrade. Then they beat Aberdeen, Anderlecht, and Getafe before losing to Zenit in the semi finals. Tournaments from the past are so much fun to look into and compare them to the current year.

I was just pulling data from here:

In the Bundesliga era (excluding caretakers), the average days for a coach for Bayern is 809 days. If you go post-unification, it's 608. Of course in that time you had Hitzfeld (twice). He alone brings the average up by 100 days.

I don't have an issue with getting rid of Tuchel-at minimum, he seems to have divided the team, and the performance and tactics is just not there since Christmas. The lame duck session for the rest of the season is odd, but I wouldn't be surprised if he is canned, should they not proceed bit further in the CL.

How does arsenal end up on top of the shitpile on a day where Napoli and Barcelona play?

On a night with UCL ball, Liverpool vs Luton ends up being the best game of the night. Napoli and Barca are both horrific and Arsenal have reminded the world that they are and always will be the red version of Tottenham.

New Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe says his "preference" is to build a new stadium for the club that can also "serve the north of England".

United have played at the 74,310-capacity Old Trafford since 1910, but Ratcliffe acknowledged it had become "tired and in need of refurbishment".
A new stadium could be built next to the existing ground in Trafford Park.

"It's about time someone built a national stadium in the north of England," said the British billionaire.

Ratcliffe added the potential project could be a "catalyst for regeneration" in south Manchester and would therefore warrant a "conversation" with the government about using taxpayers' money.
Fucking hell, he's been officially in charge for literally one day and he's already following the billionaire playbook of begging for taxpayer gibs for a stadium.

UEFA Europa League, Round of 16

Sporting - Atalanta
Roma - Brighton Albion
AC Milan - Slavia Praha
SC Freiburg - West Ham
Sparta Praha - Liverpool
Benfica - Rangers
Marseille - Villareal
Qarabag - Leverkusen

UEFA Conference League, Round of 16

Some fucking dumb Belgian club that noone likes - Fenerbahce
Sturm Graz - LOSC
Servette - Viktoria Pilsen
Olympiakos - Maccabi Tel-Aviv
Molde FK - FC Brugge
Ajax Amsterdam - Aston Villa
Dinamo Zagreb - PAOK
Maccabi Haifa - Fiorentina

That seems dumb though?
It is dumb. I thought that Europa League and Conference League was supposed to draw for the round of 16 and set the bracket, but they reset it for the quarter finals so, this just seems stupid. There is a seeded and unseeded pot but it seems like they could have done something about it to make sure that teams don't meet again until at least the quarter finals
