Ah the more things change, the more they stay the same. It's funny, I was reading an article earlier where Ten hag very much came off like he was malding over the criticism of him being kinda shit, since "only City have won more trophies than him while he's been there". My nigga in Christ you've spent £660mil to get a Carabao Cup, an FA cup, United's lowest premier league finish, and started the new season 1-2.


BBC Sport had an interesting article up about the transfer window in general:
Some kinda wild stats in there. City apparently made a nice profit this window, Brighton had the biggest net spend by far, and the newly promoted teams dropped a fair chunk in an effort to avoid the straight up and down.

Sure, when I look at the Conference League teams Chelsea sticks out. Obviously. But that's the exception and not the rule and to every rule is an exception. Premier League teams outrank most of the other teams and leagues anyways. Like Nottingham has more money to throw around than Frankfurt. Looking at the CC of Chelsea they would be ranked 2nd in the Euro League pots behind -surprise- another Premier League team (ManU). Chelsea's CC has a bigger CC than all the teams in pot 3 of the Conference League combined. Even Tottenham (pot 1 of Euro League) outranks every other team in Euro League when we just look at the CC. The only team Tottenham doesn't outrank is -surprise- Chelsea.

Overall the more I look at the new system the more I start to like it - ignoring the obvious downsides like more fucking matches with more fucking teams I can't even spell their names and thus probably don't care at all. At least in theory. How it will play out IRL we have to wait and see. That the matches in the new group stage are just one legged might lead to some surprises which might fuck up things hilariously. With the competitions being closed from each other and the teams only getting one shot at one trophy it should lead to more motivation to win a match and thus lead to more fierce matches. The last matchday could get really exciting. At least that's my hope.

The whole point in the old system was to drive engagement, since most of the money comes from telly, and there are a whole load of really popular teams (mostly from England/Spain/Italy + PSG) who aren't guaranteed to make it out of the group stage. Did Juve/Man U/Atletico have a bad CL group stage? No worries, we can still capitalise on the audience they'll bring to the Europa League knockouts so long as they at least came 3rd

I think the new system follows in the same vein, and was brought in to encourage more big teams making it through in the first place, since everyone gets a wider spread of weaker teams (the teams from the top pots go from 6 games to assert themselves to 8, so the law of averages runs over more of the freak results which could previously have decided a group) and still make it through after coming what would have been third in their group. Not to mention the odd weaker team who makes it through becomes the "David versus Goliath" story to sell till they get knocked out. In the meantime, the big clubs have a better change of getting through and cashing in for as long as possible, and UEFA get the corresponding ticket/TV money - the new format means that only 8 teams get knocked out after the group stage, with 8 making it through as top-ranked teams and the following 16 going through a playoff

As you say, we don't know for sure how it'll play out, but in the same way that league systems with big money become quite predictable (winners being City, Real, Bayern and Juve unless you have a freak year), the more matches you have, the more it favours better teams (these days meaning those from the big leagues with limitless budgets)

Alright, sorry for multiple postings but I have my full transfer window done for the summer. This isn't a full breakdown of all the league's and transfers because the current list has 20 pages. Those pages don't also include my commentary (don't kill me).

So basic rules of what I was going for when finding these
-All transfer ins for these clubs are included
-Transfer outs were anything that actually had a fee (or undisclosed), a player that might be recognizable, or potentially went to a club that should drive interest.
-I used all 20 premier league teams (sorry but its the most popular league), Inter Milan, Juventus, AC Milan, and Napoli, Atletico Madrid, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and PSG.
-Please let me know if I am completely off base on a team's strategy for their transfer strategy. I am going off the net spend and the players coming in and out.
-Please note, net spend isn't what is reported on the books. Incoming money (Revenue) is recognized right away and outgoing money (expenses) will be amortized over the course of the contract. If this is confusing, hire your favorite tax lawyer to teach you accounting principals :)

Thoughts- Seems like the revolution is on at Chelsea. They have figured out how they want to buy players now and get rid of the ones who don't fit that plan. While the transfers in don't entirely make sense (Felix and Neto come to mind) the fact that they were able to offload Lukaku Arrizabalaga, Sarr, Ziyech, and Sterling, even if it is just loans for now, is pretty impressive. They just need to keep a manager in place for longer than 2 seasons to see if this long term plan can come to fruition

Why would be a transfer to Al-Taawhatever be more relevant than one to Al-Raed haha It's also probably the weirdest transfer. Why the fuck is a Saudi club raiding one of the worst teams in 2. Bundesliga? Braunschweig barely escaped relegtaion to 3rd league last season. This season they are already ranked last -again- with 0 points out of 4 matches and a goal difference of 3 against 15.

Anyways, a new tranfer got announced today. Mats Hummels whose contract with Dortmund ended after the last season made it official that he has joined AS Rom.

Edit: With the breaks for internationals and the European Nation League matches only starting tomorrow I need my football fix so I'm watching the US Virgin Island versus the Bahamas live right now. Bahamas got a penatly after 20 fucking seconds lol

Sorry, I was only reporting on the transfers in and out of the Saudi league that were to relevant leagues. There were a bunch of transfers between Saudi League teams and with other middle eastern countries but reporting on Al Mohammad Camel Fucker Bin Salami moving to a new club was just irrelevant
 
It hasn't been posted so far but Osimhen got kicked out of the Napoli squad and they didn't even register him for the new season. A deal with Chelsea didn't happen and neither did one with Al Ahli and with the transfer window for the big leagues being closed last Friday he kind of was fucked. But then Galatasaray showed up and he is now with them on a sort of loan deal with an alleged transfer clause of 75 million.
