Born and raised in Leeds, went with the meme nation. Not even Haaland can save Norway.
They've spent so much money on trying to compete with the rest of the world too. When you look somewhere like South America it has amazing talent because it's ingrained into their culture, whereas China has literally no notable football history to inspire them and most kids are thrown into things like academics over sports. No wonder they're shit. There is a match fixing scandal in Chinese football going on. The Chinese federation banned 43 managers and players for allegedly fixing matches. Some have been banned for life. Investigations lasted for 2 years. A South Korean player held a press conference where he started crying and denied all alligations against him and accused the Chinese cops of pressuring him into admitting he had fixed matches.
Speaking of Chinese football. While we had the break for the Nations League the AFC had WC qualifications rounds too. China lost their first match against Japan 7:0. The second match didn't went much better. China got a 1:0 lead against Saudi Arabia and the Arabs even saw a red card but China felted and lost 2:1 in the end.
They have over one fucking billion people there and that's the best they can do. Embarrassing.
There is no excuse, Japan and S Korea managed to be decent and Korea is even more cut-throat than China when it comes to academics. They've spent so much money on trying to compete with the rest of the world too. Another classic. Vini Jr. plays like hell for Real Madrid, then turns invisible when playing for the NT.kekd at Brazil media criticizing Vinicius after all the muh racism shit. He could always hide behind Neymar before, now he's their biggest star and he's shit.
I think it ultimately comes down to prestige. Chinese sports are renowned for several things like badminton, basketball and athletics but football isn't really one of them. You can bet they aren't getting the best pick of the crop there. (If you go to any city in China, you're more likely to find badminton or basketball courts, or even Olympic sized running tracks to any football fields.) I never heard of anyone caring about Chinese football when I was there. There is no excuse, Japan and S Korea managed to be decent and Korea is even more cut-throat than China when it comes to academics.
China is also shit at basketball, i think they are just shit at developing team sport talentI think it ultimately comes down to prestige. By contrast, football has some prestige in Japan and S. Korea, the former even producing a few anime football game and series. Maybe not to the point of baseball, but it gets enough popcult cachet.
It's still pathetic, mind you, but I can sort of understand why.
Juve 2-0Champions League starts tomorrow and ngl the 1st matchday has some really interesting matches with Juventus vs Eindhoven, Milan vs Liverpool, Man City vs Inter, Feyernood vs Leverkusen, Atalanta vs Arsenal and Atletico vs RB Leipzig. Know nothing about how Monaco is performing in Ligue 1 and Barcelona actually looks pretty good so far in La Liga but maybe it might turn out to be a sleeper hit. Same for Brügge vs Dortmund.
FC Bayern vs Dinamo, Real Madird vs Stuttgart, P$G vs Girona should be clear wins for Bayern/Madrid/P$G and again, not going to lie but as much as I don't like P$G I think they never look as good as they do at the moment and they are actually fun to watch.
Young Boys vs Aston Villa, Sporting vs LOSC, Bologna vs Donezk, Celtic vs Bratislavia, Red Star vs Benfica and Stade Brest vs Sturm Graz are all matches where I'm not really interested in and where I either the teams on par or only slightly advantages for one side but they all have the potential to be sleeper hits too (not all of them at the same time ofc).
Not expecting every team already going all in as it's just the 1st out of eight matches but I'm actually a little bit hyped. Not sure when I said that about a modern Champions League day 1 of the group stage.
