G4 Returning in 2021

G4TV was the original channel for actual fans of video gaming and anime.
The problem now is that both of those hobbies are being used as props for political agendas and celebrity/influencer culture – the types that do not care for, or respect, said hobbies.

Since Morgan Webb and Olivia Munn have moved on to do different things, and Adam Sessler is a lolcow who destroyed his reputation, I fear G4 will just be another copy and paste version of IGN.

No one wants to be a copy and paste version of IGN.

Ironically, of the entire lot, the only one who was actually a gamer is Morgan Webb. Munn was a fake "gamer girl" but of a different sort than the "Current Year" punk/hipster SJW influencer types. She was more like an actress who used G4 to get her foot in the door to an actual movie and TV career.

Olivia Munn pandered to the audience, but she never seemed pretentious about it nor did she actively insult gamers like the modern clout chasers of the 2010's (and 2020). For her, vidya and the people who played it wasn't a political platform. It was just an entry job to get herself into showbiz.

Morgan Webb moved on because she just wants to game and work in her own little game company alongside her husband, but I can see her coming back for a G4 reboot as a side gig or a guest star.

Olivia Munn has been doing her own thing and starring in movies for a decade now, but I could see Comcast paying the money for her to do a one-time guest spot.

Adam Sessler is a hyper-woke bearded SJW with a cocaine addiction and probably won't even get a call from Comcast.

This has potential to be cool.

TechTV was better but G4 was pretty cool too, while I would prefer to have TechTV back it's nice to have something in that lineage live on.

I actually kind of agree, as long as Comcast doesn't try to shoot for the moon and keep it small.

If you're going to bring back G4, don't aim for the Zoomers. Make it a Millennial nostalgia thing at first and have it be a category of the Peacock streaming service. Being up front and realistic with the audience makes it more likely to succeed at launch and then you can grow into a proper new brand.

Basically launch G4 with the archive catalogs of their old programming like Cinematech, X-Play, G4 Icons, Attack of the Show!, et cetera, and have new seasons of X-Play and Attack of the Show in addition to the old archive episodes.

If you're going to do X-Play and Attack of the Show for a new era, the format might have to be changed and even with the Woke Left and culture war BS aside, a new format is really easy to screw up and really hard to pull it off right.

I'm giving this a 50/50 chance of being decent (cue the rainbow stickers) but only if they keep it small at the start and not try to oversell it and go all "how do you do, fellow gamers/Zoomers?" which they probably will because the entertainment industry in America is creatively bankrupt.

Oh dude, I never even thought of this at first, a complete archive of X-Play would be a literal dream come true for me, there's tons of episodes that can't be found online.

I never even thought such a thing would be a possibility because I was always thinking along of lines of releasing X-Play on DVD or something, which of course would never happen, but putting it on streaming seems like a possibility.

Let's hope of an archive of old content is part of what they're planning to do with G4, that would be amazing.

I actually enjoyed X Play, AotS, Judgement Day, and Cheat, plus a few others I cant remember. That being said I can get all of that from better sources already since youtube alone offers better versions of those exact types of shows without the cringy corporate overlord bs. This to me comes off as the mid-life crisis of the high school football star that could have went pro were it not for his bum knee he got when he missed the touchdown pass on the last play of his last game trying to redo that mistake. They realized years too late that pulling the plug on the vidya games channel fucked them over big time when the kids and their vidya game content is prime real estate in the current year. Also as I remember they could not run their final line up of shows in current year anyways because Cops has already been cancelled. Unless, and this would be too big balled to do, they picked up Cops and Live PD and made a stand against the REEEEtards.

I really doubt this is going to be live TV again, it's probably going to be programming on a streaming service, in which case there's no need for filler like Cops.

It's a great idea, but ideally they'd bring back some of the actual original crew like Kevin, but there's definitely potential in this idea.

Protomagicalgirl will have his own show, won't he? 🔫
Proto and his klingon friend.

In the beginning of G4, I loved watching it for its shows like Portals, Cheats, finding out about speedrun records, and people involved with the creation of the newest titles. Towards its end, I barely ever watched it, because it was like SpikeTV, but shittier.

Given the current climate of "Nerd Culture" and the extremely politicized and monopolized culture of almost every bit of consumable media, I don't have any hopes of it being an enjoyable revival.

That's right, re-launch something the Zoomers, neither remember or want. With any pop culture thing you should be trying to capture the interest of the current 18-24 generation. Just make a new channel or this is gonna be to Millenials what CBS is to Boomers.
I'm a Brit and thus only know of G4 by reputation and what little filtered online over the years, though we had .techTV, and shows like Cybernet and Games Master that fill a similar nostalgic niche.

The problem with doing that is, as you point out, zoomers have little or no nostalgia for it, and without the nostalgia they have nothing to sell. As others have said, there is a 99.9% chance that this is going to be woke garbage just like every nostalgia reboot from Ghostbusters to Bill Nye. G4 is a channel who's hosts went full anti-GamerGate and full Trump Derangement Syndrome. Even if it wasn't, ResetEra, Jim Sterling, and the rest would harass the streaming service until the show was pulled.

However, one way of saving the show would be to go all in on that. Have Jon Tron, PewDiePie, Dr Disrespect, the Dorito-Pope, James Rolfe, the Consolvania guys, all the cancelled gamer people you can think of, but have the show be a milquetoast games news and review show. The nuclear backlash against it looks insane even to normies, and then once they find their footing you start with the edgy jokes. Fuck it, give 8-bit guy or LGR a segment too.

Oh boy I can’t wait for a shittier version of the GameStop ad channel that I have to pay for.

It would be awesome to have a complete archive of X-Play, AoTS, and all the other shows from the past. Those shows could be really cringy but they had a charm to them. Perhaps nostalgia goggles effect me.

I don't think it's in the cards though. They'll take one look at sketches like Bustice and immediately say "nope"

I'm cautiously optimistic, even though I know it'll probably be a complete disaster. I discovered Attack of the Show a decade ago when I was home sick from school, and they were replaying the previous night's episode mid-afternoon, and was instantly hooked. I started with it after Munn had left, and they were trying a bunch of different co-hosts with Kevin before settling on Candace Bailey. Although, tbh, they lost something when Kevin left. Ideally, they could bring him back, and, since I don't think Candace Bailey is doing much these days, maybe she could return as well. Ah well, I'll give it a shot depending on who they get to host it

I feel very lucky to have discovered TechTV one night back in 2002 purely out of chance, was just channel surfing and just so happened to stop on it.

From what I remember it was a pretty high number, so the likelihood of stumbling upon it wasn't great, I only wish I had discovered it even sooner.

I liked G4 back in the day. Since things are different now, it'll probably tank, whether they brought back coke-filled libtard Adam Sessler or now.

In my opinion G4 was already somewhat past its prime as far back as 2006, they had stopped airing anime and had started airing more reruns that year, I also felt that X-Play went to shit by the end of that year and had stopped watching it, for me "X-Play: The Musical" served as a series finale.

In other words G4's peak was far shorter than the actual overall lifespan of the network, which means they've got their work that much more cut out for them to make something worthwhile.

Can they at least release some higher quality episodes of Cinematech? The uploads on YT are the best we got and it ain't much.
