Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
Japanese developers have an unfortunate tendency of not thinking ahead that their games might get localized and simply don't make the UI flexible enough to do it.
Except it's more often them not giving a fuck about a translation than forgetting that one may occur

Jill accusation of Imreann, first one is JP, second one is EN.
I guess being a pedophile is so bad that a villain can't have that trait. I thought people love idea of having a religious leader being a pedo.

EN with time stamp, hope it works. (52:36)

Localization is supervised by Koji Fox, who also works on FF14 localization. I guess this is where, the guy knows how Western reacting to anything sexual badly.
I found out about this yesterday. You'd think with how dark the whole game is they wouldn't be afraid of mentioning rape or pedo priests but I guess that's considered too far.

Sure, you can argue it's implied in the English localization given the Iron Kingdom specifically kidnapped women, but still. This is kind of an important detail that adds more weight to Jill's anger towards Imreann, especially since it's highly likely she was raped herself.

The Shiva censorship is the worst kind of crazy SJW shit. The pedophile stuff is understandable to censor, but it's kind of funny how apparently hinting at that is worse than straight up talking about slitting their throats.
I dunno if it is sjw or just not wanting to rock the boat too much. The funny thing is that I got to that scene and I was sure that she'll say he was a rapist only to say he "only" killed children and I thought it was changed so it wouldn't be implicated that Jill is "damaged goods" and it will piss of the otaku horde.

I was going to pirate this version to play instead of the gamecube version because I saw it had QOL changes, but the fact they changed anything, not in a retranslation way like with Chrono Trigger DS, just puts me off this version entirely.

Yikes.

At least two of the female characters have what are basically thongs for bottoms in the original game. Any word yet if shorts got added to them?

They specifically left out the english voiceover just so they wouldn't have to record new lines to fit all the shit they changed, and so it would be harder for a returning player to immediately notice (except for shit like "yikes" obviously)

I highly doubt any Japanese text was touched.

So instead of doing a more accurate, less 'problematic' translation they just stuck yikes on the end of it?
Seems like it. Considering this is something you can encounter in the village within the first twenty minutes of the game (hence why it was easy for me to look up on Youtube), it wouldn't surprise me the "Yikes" was added as a kneejerk reaction after playtesting.

For info, japanese SKU of Baiten Kaitos I+II HD Remaster only supports Japanese & English text options. International SKU has English, French, German, Italian and Spanish (while Japanese is entirely absent). It's a common trend of Bandai Namco from my personal experience on the Nintendo Switch.

The ironic part, from what I understand, is that page was already translated to be harsher than what it actually is. The original comment was a softer "believe in your husband no matter what he does.". Of course this is also probably the same game where they got rid of the male/female option for the spirit the main character talks to.

The English and Japanese websites of Unicorn Overlord have exactly the same pin-pointed screenshots, pictures and videos which make it easy to check out that the English "translation" is just turning a lot of simple sentences into paragraphs of fluff.

Yes, we shall certainly hasten and rebuild our army before our decisive battle with Galerius.

Alain... Listen well. I order you as the Queen.

Queen Ilenia: "General Valmore. What do you hope for after this usurpation of the throne ?"
General Valmore: "To become ruler of the Fevrith continent, as a descendant of the Emperor of Zenoira."

There is a following script line present in the character profiles under Galerius/Valmore:
Valmore EN.pngValmore JP.png
To become ruler of the Fevrith continent, as a descendant of the Emperor of Zenoira. We will take back our former territory. That is all.

It is, once again, an era for Zenoira to govern this continent.

I'm surprised they added that bit about being his mother, generally that's the kind of thing they'd remove nowadays.
