Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

Maybe now but historically they weren't, were they?
Can't speak for the past but I remember a fan translator dropped a project due to harassment after he translated a Japanese word "newhalf" into "tranny."

To my knowledge newhalf is not meant to be a term of endearment so it was actually accurate but of course everyone got pissy because accuracy only matters if it's against the chuds.

I'm afraid I don't remember the actual game or person that this happened with though but I assume someone probably knows which one I'm talking about.

IIRC that was Tom, the translator for the SNES Goemon games.
The fallout was that he had to lay low for a bit and HG101 and Reera got a middle finger in Tokimeki Memorial (DDSTranslation's next project) at the end of the romfile.

Ganbare Goemon 3. The troons attempted to literally memory hole the original patch, you cannot find it in collections which purport to archive the version history, such as on archive.org.

However, BasedMods has the goods.

I was inspired to make this meme after watching Censored Gaming's video about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's Tifa Bedroom Scene. Remember to start hating localizers if you haven't already. It's only a matter of time.

The idea that Japanese is somehow too difficult or complex to translate accurately is complete insanity.
It's not that they can't, it's that they don't want to do it accurately.

American gamers have been at war with each other over japan for decades. You have the people that love the japanese and their stuff and the people that absolutely hate the japanese to where they destroy the things they create from the inside out, and those are the people currently in power.

And then you have the enlightened centrist take, which is that the Japanese can't write for shit either but make up for it sometimes with aesthetics when they're not being excessively derivative like everybody else.

We can translate ancient Sumerian, proto Germanic, one of the oldest known written languages and even ancient Egyptian which is literally just pictographs into English.

Or maybe you should be questioning modern interpretations of ancient texts a little more closely.

"Resetera and HG101 are still cancer"

get fucked resetera trannies

Tom is probably personally responsible for a majority of the translations I care about but you would be surprised at the amount of complete dogshit pushed in translation for a long time now. The same kind of autism that makes men think chopping off their dick and wearing a dress is a good idea is required to stick to a thankless multi year community translation project.

Because the only people translating cuneiform would be autistic classicists who already speak 4 languages and spent a lifetime in their study. We have plenty of good Japanese translators, it's just that game companies prefer to hire bottom of the barrel morons who are, if not malicious, just incompetent.

When people who normally don't pay attention to localization shenanigans, and usually just play everything in English, notice things are fucked enough to go check the JP audio/script you know the situation is getting dire:

A Disjointed Journey Begins: Dialogue and Localization Challenges

I honestly wasn’t prepared for this. I’ve played every entry of the Saga series multiple times, so I was confident that I could approach this adventure easily and not stumble on the systems that typically confuse new fans. However, I was quickly humbled by the lack of context provided to the actual story. If you want answers, you will have to work for them, and this demo experience will likely not showcase all of the game’s offerings.

Still, one other narrative element didn’t sit right with him. The localization is quite cringy. I don’t usually do this, but I decided to play with the Japanese audio and Japanese text using translation software to directly translate a few conversations because I felt like the dialogue between characters in the English version was disjointed. Playing with Japanese text revealed a lot of personality put into these characters in the English version that doesn’t seem to be present in the Japanese release. Accent stereotypes like “y’all” and “naur” are found in the English text, but I couldn’t find them in the Japanese text or showcased in the character’s audio. The audio is a whole other beast, and even though I exclusively play games and watch anime with English audio nowadays (primarily out of laziness because I don’t want to read more than I have to), I switched to the Japanese audio.

Despite the jarring English dub and localization missteps, SaGa Emerald Beyond’s core of intriguing gameplay and narrative potential shines through.

I swear, I’m not a picky gamer, and I rarely even care about localization taking liberties here and there considering the localized region. Still, it just feels like there is no cohesion in this particular game. Nothing flows during dialogue, leaving it almost impossible for the player to relate to or care about the adventure. I’m hoping the other character arcs don’t have this same flimsy opening. Sometimes, it’s like the characters are having two conversations simultaneously, or there’s missing context to understand the situation. For a super surface level and basic example, an NPC says, “Hi, I need help.” English Diva No.5 responds by saying, “Yes, Love?”

Meanwhile, the Japanese text says, “Yes, Yes. What can I help you with?” (). “Yes, Love?” doesn’t make sense to me in this situation because Diva No.5 is just meeting this person for the first time who refers to her as an alien because she just appeared in this world. I don’t know in what context someone would refer to someone else as “Love” when they are just meeting and being referred to as an Alien. Sorry, I’m getting too deep. Maybe it’ll make more sense when the characters have more time to develop.

The idea that Japanese is somehow too difficult or complex to translate accurately is complete insanity.
my favorite coping mechanism from amateurs is claiming how stiff the Japanese language is.

I have a collection of Japanese folklore in English. No patriarchy, poggers, skibiddi, or reddit memes.

Seems you can accurately translate Japanese into English after all.
A book, website ... what's the name of what you're referring to?

So, today I learned that FF7R not only nerfed the ballistics of Tifa/Aerith in the new game, but also all the way back in the first Episode of the remake. Pretty pathetic, does Square even know their audience?

Other than archive.org, which site was effected? I will need to make sure to avoid the ones festering with trannies.

All of them, to my knowledge. You will not find the OG non-trooned out patch outside of places like BasedMods.
