Game Censorship & Localization General Thread

"Rub-a-dub-dub thanks for the grub" is also an infamous shitty fansub translation of 頂きます (Itadakimasu). I think in this case it may not be a reference, but a parallel evolution born from the mind of a retard. Allegedly the localizer of this game is also the one responsible for this monstrosity:

That's correct. Brian Gray. He did a one-man hack job for the Gotta Protectors game.

Has anyone tjought of doing a fan translation for these games? I know this happens with Ys, but I’m surprised it hasn’t happened with something like this, or that Live a Live remake from a few years back.

There should be more "re-translations" in the community. Similar to game mods that add back things that were censored or "Undubs" which replace the English dub with the original Japanese.

It's happened at least once, because I remember a retranslation mod getting a user perma banned over it.

Nobody wants to do it. It's too politically charged except in the case of Working Designs or something like Breath of Fire 2. Safe targets.

A game that desperately needs a retranslation is Wild Arms 2.

A very unnecessary piece of censorship has recently happened in one of the best games of the year Stellar Blade.

Stellar Blade in-game art referencing racial slur will be removed, says Sony [A].

They basically had an unintentional based moment, & because the usual suspects started dilating, so they had to remove it. However, it's not changed with something almost equally great.

Basically, this:

This is pretty accurate.

In the old days, a fan translation can be considered bad if either of this happens:
1) they insert unfunny current year pop culture in the script which quickly becomes outdated when gamers play it years later. Not a fan translation but Working Designs was notorious for this.
2) they immaturely insert swear/curse words or exaggerate the script for comedic effect. This happened to Tales of Phantasia as you pointed out where the main character or the main character's friend points out that Arche the witch girl, "fucks like a tiger." What he actually said was far more tame but "fuck" in a JRPG is "funny" so let's go with it.

There wasn't actually too much politics related "localizing for the modern audience" censorship to protect people's feelings because:
1) Politics wasn't as gay back then
2) Troons were hidden so they couldn't promote their degeneracy
3) Women hated video games and the men who played them

I don't know if he's still alive but I remember a guy called SkyRender who went against the crowd by retranslating Final Fantasy VI as accurately and literally as possible and faced heat for it.
That's a very informative post that paints a crystal clear picture of how standards have totally slipped in fan tranmother of God what is that thing in your second post?!
That's not just some criminally obese fucker doing the nu-mid life crisis routine, that's an actual Goddamned skinwalker.

The hilarious thing about the word nigger being so "offensive" and taboo is that we have so many words now to refer to Blacks, more than any other race. Basketball Americans, Doctors and Engineers, Joggers and now... Crimers. Because Blacks commit crimes at a higher rate than other races. It's so obvious, why didn't we come up with it before.

Based Koreans, even if unintentional.

Japanese line was also "Yo yo bro (nii-chan), I see that you're bringing a cute girl (nee-chan) with you".

Is the Japanese line still intact in the Japanese version?

Also, I’m more curious about how they’re treating the tranny in the modern day.

Every fucking port, remake, and reboot of classic games now have pozzed and gay retranslations.

The same thing happened with Baten Kaitos and Chrono Cross. I don't remember the specific example but both had something to do with women and gender roles (eg you should be more ladylike etc). I'm pretty sure but not completely sure the original Japanese script is intact (so the same as the original Japanese release). It's only the English script that got Sweet Baby Inc'd.

Many such cases.

Insane edits. Can't have a woman saying "sorry" was a feminist talking point back in 2014, but why the line about a skintflint coinpurse? It's like they just heard the term skintflint and had to include it somewhere.

Also, isn't review begging against Steam's TOS?

Can you talk about the enormous horde of people demanding refunds?
No, you see I saw this movie before in Blade & Soul when a bunch of feminist lolcowlizers bleached the whole game white with Politically Correct sanitization. The whole game was taking the piss out of its own sexualization with factions named "The butt pirates" and shotgun weddings for peeping toms and they were all ripped out.

They literally made a comment graveyard during the beta, with smug feminist cms bragging in the thread that they're censoring the complaints, and the entire community demanded refunds.

Some eye bleach for y’all: Wakabayashi Toshiya’s Happy Kanako's Killer's Life apparently has a great localization. The mangaka happily redraws panels for so that the animal puns (which the story heavily relies on) can be enjoyed in English as well, since many of the Japanese puns don’t translate well.

He also offers the illustrations without text, so that they can be fan translated into other languages. (Or at least he used to— his comic has been licensed by Seven Seas Entertainment as of 2021 so I’m sure the legal situation has changed.)

Maybe I’ll be “um, achtually”ed about the quality of the localization by people who follow the comic more closely than I do, but it’s still refreshing to see a mangaka so involved with translation and localization efforts.
Do with this info what you will lol

Interesting localization happening in Cygames’ Granblue Fantasy’s new Our Style and Our Substance story event. Localization is done in-house (and here’s an English interview with the localization team). Opinions?

Sorry in advance but these are both livestream archives, couldn’t find anything else but hopefully they’re useable enough for anyone who wants to look more into this.

Japanese
I personally don’t mind when localization teams have fun with stuff, and this kind of unserious meme-y stuff isn’t unusual for the game, but in this case I think it’s just egregious and takes away from the actual story. It’s like they picked the slang/text-speech based on what would age worst the fastest.
