The problem isn't that a Targaryen is doing that, the problem is that a Targaryen is doing this and it feels like the series is still trying to set up Dany as some sort of likeable, charismatic and competent leader. I fear that the writers think by making Dany a lunatic that literally burns her enemies on a whim, that we respect that character for being strong-willed, capable and independent.
As for the Tarly BBQ, these are the same actions Aegon the Conqueror pulled on the Reach Lords when they refused to bend the knee and fought him, only on a much wider scale. Dany’s taking a page from the Aegon playbook. It’s still seen as something divisive amongst the characters. If it upset Sam you know what she did was not the best decision. Is it Targaryen madness or a necessary show of power? We’ll have to wait and see.
For the record, not all Targaryens pull the full Aerys II and go crazy. Maester Aemon was one of the most sane people on the show. Targaryens are crazy, but we don’t know if Dany will exhibit the more risky but educated crazy like Aegon I who decided let’s conquer Westeros and ended up uniting a kingdom, of the destructive Aerys crazy, or the one Targaryen who drank wildfire because he thought it would turn him into a dragon.
