Dany becoming a psychopathic mass murderer just makes no sense. I can understand being in conflict with Jon about the throne, but what she did to King's Landing was worse than anything Joffrey, Ramsay, and Cersei combined have ever done, and supposedly it was spurned on by the death of Missandre? It seems as though the writers rushed to make her evil just so Jon will have to tragically kill his girlfriend (even though the show already did that plotline much better with Ygritte). What was the point of all of the screentime showing her freeing the slaves of Essos if she was always just meant to turn into an evil psychopath? I know she's executed enemies in cold blood before, but it always seemed like ruthless necessity that was honestly no different than the other characters (i.e. her murder of the Tarlys was no more ruthless than Jon's execution of Janos Slynt and Olly).
Hell, If the writers wanted to make Dany evil, they could have had her kill (or attempt to kill) the Stark sisters to keep Jon's lineage a secret, an act which could be seen as both villainous yet understandable from her perspective. By making her a genocidal psychopath, it's literally like watch Jon transform into Ramsay just because Sam died. Her massacre of King's Landing was nothing but unjustifiable petulant sadism meant for shock value, and is just another deathblow that the writers have been dealing to all of the show's crucial thematic elements and character arcs.
Also, Jaime's character arc was a complete waste of time, and his journey to Winterfell was entirely pointless, as was his fight with Euron (and the Euron character as a whole). I did like Arya and the Hound this episode, as it was exhilarating watching Arya be horrified at the massacre, and Cleganebowl (probably was the only plotline on this show that) was actually worth the hype. I felt that Cersei had a fitting death, as her arrogance finally collapsed into helplessness and regret, although it seems that, like Jon's prophecy, the writers decided to subvert expectations rather than deliver on the build up.
I'm interested to see how the final episode will play out but I can't help but feel that I wasted a decade of my life watching a nihilistic shaggy dog story. With the Night King dead and Danerys irreedemably evil, I can't really come up with a meaningful point of the story. As a matter of fact, by making Dany evil and Arya killing the Night King, it seems as though the writers are forcing Jon to take the Iron Throne just to subvert all of the show's earlier themes bout how familial tribalism is self-destructive. Jon has no other reason to be alive than to fulfill his Targaryen legacy of taking the throne, even though both he and the audience know it's worthless (and buried underneath rubble). And if the spoilers are true that Bran becomes King, then that's even worse, because how does an omniscient apathetic paraplegic being ruler give any meaningful insight into human nature, which is what this show always promised to be?
All in all, this show is just such a massive disappointment, and the only saving grace I can think of is that maybe GRRM lied to the writers about the ending so that the shows wouldn't spoil his books, which he actually has been working on instead of sitting on his lazy ass. Still, I can't believe that Sons of Anarchy actually had a better final season than GoT. This may be the most disappointing show in TV history.
