It wised up a whole generation of previously apathetic people to being systematically lied to by the media, and it was also the first time a 2000's style social justice offensive saw any serious pushback. A lot of those people started noticing all the other malicious bullshit the media does, and what has been noticed can't be unnoticed. The implications of normie Millennials and Gen Xers who just wanted to kill* for God's sake (*in CoD) and instead found themselves fighting an asymmetrical war of PR attrition and spicy memes against blue checkmarks, TV networks, Hilary Clinton, and multi-billion dollar corporations are still playing out today.
That's not nothing, and it's the reason it still stings the amholes of extremely online media faggots seven years later.

I remember it quite well because I was already a grown ass man with a wife and kids and a job and a passing interest in computer games when the media suddenly, in creepy unison, started accusing people who own PlayStation 3's of being misogynistic cyberterrorists who hate women, encouraged the gaming press to shit on their own customers, and social media started its first wave of purges to silence wrongthinkers who criticize the narrative. Cifaldi is lying out of his asshole.
It's true that it's cringe af to keep crying about GROOBERGRAB because it's not even a dead meme, it's a fossil. But the phenomenology of Gamergate is still relevant as it provides a template for popular distributed resistance to clown world through fun, ridicule and weaponized autism. Stuff that Saul Alinsky would've approved of in his Rules for Radicals, tho he'd have hated the goals.
Seven years and a coof later, the Western world is going full steam for a loose kind of Chinese style social credit system where dissent is either blatantly illegal or nominally legal but they'll wipe your internet presence and try to stop you from earning a living through outrage mobs targeting your employer or business. Gamergate didn't fix anything in the gaming industry, but it did show people that they're not entirely powerless.
