One of the first things I Install is CCCP because of the first two Thief games. Cutscenes won't work without it on anything after Windows XP.
K-Lite Codec Pack is the better choice nowadays. Even comes pre-bundled with a maintained fork of MPC-HC, which by the way can also use Nvidia Super Resolution if you have an RTX card, so it supersedes madVR.

It was like 4 years ago, I don't remember exactly. Didn't matter, the videos weren't important to the plot, they were just supposed to be funny world building videos.

They're still handy. K-Lite comes with better thumbnail rendering, HEVC codecs which don't exactly come preinstalled, LAV filters and MPC-HC which relies on codecs K-Lite comes with. If you're a VLC type of guy then VLC comes pre-bundles with it's own codecs.

I took a look at super-resolution out of curiosity then forgot about it until I wanted to play a video with subtitles and discovered that the video renderer needed for it broke subtitles or whatever it was. Is that still the case?

Doesn't happen to me, MPC video renderer and default subtitle renderer.
