There's a Dave2D video on the new Steam hardware too. I'm wondering how powerful that AMD GPU is going to be. My main GPU is still a 3080-Ti and this sounds like it'll be closer to the AMD 7900? I'm also surprised GN didn't comment on it only having 8GB of VRAM. Seems weird to not have 16GB on something targeting 4k (via FSR) home cinema setups.

I hope this starts cutting into the Windows market share as Win11 is total fucking garbage. It's unlikely Bazire will take more than 2% of the market of people who don't want to go up to Win11, but a Steam box could be pretty significant. Maybe we'll see a 2nd version next year that has an AMD 9070 equivalent in it? I'd honestly like to see AMD reenter the highend against the 5080. The market is ripe for them.

The teardown and testing videos on this Steam box should be pretty interesting. It seems like Valve isn't locking down anything, so you could probably but FreeBSD or Windows or whatever the fuck on this without much trouble; which is a big bonus over anything ARM based.
 
It looks good honestly. Makes sense to start out on the low end instead of investing in soldered 5080 solutions and wasting a ton of money, which is most likely why it's only 8gbvram as well. If nobody buys it then it would be a waste of time and money. Steam deck is also underpowered but people love it (not to mention the switch). If the steam box hits the right price point, it could be a boon to lots of poorfags/retards.

Yeah I'm not buying a steam box because I'm already setup so the thing I'm most excited about is the advancements made in steamOS and proton. Fuck kikerosoft.

I'm more interested in the Controller and Frame. The former is shaping up to be the best vidya controller for PC and the latter is shaping up to be the best VR headset.

I'm intrigued to see what impact this will have. I understand that there is a market for this and those within it are very enthusiastic but remain unconvinced that this demand is large enough for VR to become a meaningful widespread success. Maybe this (or someone else) can lead to mainstream adoption but there seem to be real parallels with 3D and particularly 3D TV which had immense industry support but never achieved the level of market penetration to save it from ultimately failing.

Same here. I had the OG steam machine with its controller, and it was pretty dope. That was when they started doing the community-submitted controller layouts in steam too, which is still proving its worth to this day with the steam deck. The controller was weird at first but once you got the hang of it, it was surprisingly good at pretty much every kind of game. I sold it with the steam machine long ago and regretted it (I assumed there'd be a successor coming out soon, whoops).

As for the Frame, hell yeah I'm getting one to replace my Quest 2. The Quest 3 didn't seem like much of an upgrade to me, but the Frame sure does.

It almost certainly will be. The original one was $70 if I'm not mistaken.

Im more excited for Proton. Mint is good enough if you want a balance of gaming + productivity. SteamOS feels like it will cater to a specific demographic and will only excel in 1 thing while being lacking in the other.

When I saw the specs I immediately knew they based it off the surveys. I think last week I was able to participate again so I took the opportunity to look. Steam Hardware Survey is such a massive blessing for several things, and the Steam Machine is one of them; A PC a lot of people would buy for a hopefully acceptable price.
If only developers would actually care to look at the average PC build and create their games to run optimally on that hardware...

Hopefully the Gabecube will go some way to making that a reality. With my Deck I’ve noticed more and more games having a graphics preset that references the Deck specifically and 90% of the time they’re ok. Or at least they provide a decent starting point to tweak to my preferences.
Something I feel is overlooked when saying “just target x hardware” is that two identically spec’d machines can still perform differently. When I gamed on Windows I would do my best to keep the OS lean and have as little running in the background as possible, and while I’m sure most Kiwis do the same, your average gamer certainly does not. At least with the Gabecube and Deck and their more console like environment it seems more reasonable to presume consistent performance between individuals units.

It's good that the computer/gaming market is like the average kitchen. Real static. Knives, stove, frying pan, it never goes out of style just like 8GB of VRAM.

Unlike AMD and Nvidia that gets ridiculed for trying to market 8GB cards but this 8GB AMD GPU is different because of Gaben?
