I want to say they were with the Escapist back in the day who quickly distanced themselves from Critical Proximity either after this video or after that coffee boy Alex continued making an ass of himself.
It's just funny seeing this again since it reminds me of all sorts of retards who projected and air of unwarrented self-importance floundered and floppd into into irrelevance.

Paul Tassi is a hack. Normally his glorified blog posts consist of Destiny 2 news, which is often just lifted from the front page of r/destinythegame and repackaged into an article, complete with his boring takes. As a result of this blatant content farming, he's pretty despised by the D2 community. He also uses every opportunity he has to flog his shitty sci-fi novels too.
I have to wonder who the original author of this "article" was.

Has been since at least the early GG days. About the only thing I've ever seen from him that I've agreed with is his now decade-old remarks on piracy, which are accurate primarily because they are cribbed from men who know media piracy isn't killing anything and that you beat piracy by offering a better service (Gabe Newell, Notch, etc.). Beyond that, the man seems generally incapable of forming a coherent opinion.

Going back to the topic of Paul Tassi, he's at it again, crying that he can't get clickbait on his shitty articles anymore
I legit got a bit MATI after reading the article. Basically this Guido fuck laments the days when he didn't have to do his job, and instead just scour Reddit for guides for the new flavour of the month challenges. He's not even trying to hide how much of a lazy hack he is. Fuck this guy.
In my business, writing about video games for money, we have what we call various “golden eras” of content. This is when a game is so popular, that everything you write about it is gold, racking up hundreds of thousands, millions of views, particularly on “how to” guide-type content, things people are Googling. This works for the written word and on YouTube, and past golden eras have been the launch of Pokémon GO (which still does pretty well to this day) or the pandemic era of Animal Crossing where everyone was shut-in playing that non-stop.
But one of the best golden eras was the first couple years of Fortnite. Back then, you could write up “how to complete X challenge” guide and get anywhere from a hundred thousand to several million views on a single article.
And yet, over the years, things have changed. In part because Fortnite is not quite as fresh and trendy and overwhelmingly popular as it once was, but also because Epic Games has, over time, made changes that have utterly decimated the entire guide industry.
This can be anywhere from thousands of dollars for individual writers or YouTubers who were previously making guides, or it can be potentially millions for outlets in aggregate. This may sound like a joke, but there was serious money to be made there, a synergistic relationship where Epic made a game people were invested in, and content creators made content that helped people with the game and directed them back to it. Win-win.
But these days? I barely write Fortnite guides anymore, as Epic has changed challenges so much that they’re relatively pointless to do, outside of extremely rare occasions.
The “golden era” had a pretty simply list of weekly challenges that went live every week at reset. Some number would be generic “do X damage with Y weapon” things, but there were many that were like “find X secret object” or “dance in front of Y places.” Things you wouldn’t know how to do off the top of your head, so you’d either have to do a ton of in-game exploring or you would…look up a guide. You and several million other people.
But over the years, this has been ground down to essentially nothing:
1. Epic started hiding challenges behind other challenges, meaning you had to complete them in specific order, so a “good” guide challenge could be potentially be hidden behind several layers of other stuff and people never even get to it.
2. Epic started converting most challenges into “quests,” like with this season, you have to talk to a whole bunch of map NPCs to get a million individual quests from them, making guide-writing a nightmare with no fixed weekly schedule and everyone all on different pages.
3. On the rare occasion there are still “guide-able” challenges created, Epic has now taken the liberty of literally just marking the map for players as to where to do things (this week, dance in front of birthday cakes for the anniversary event).
4. There are no longer any real mysteries or fun hunts for things that require guides. The best thing Epic ever did for the guide industry was a seasonal event called “Fortbytes” where every single day they’d hide something on the map that was worth writing a guide for. They haven’t done anything close to that for years now.
Why did Epic do this? Presumably they don’t want people alt-tabbing into Google to look up guides, and just stay in the game. Or they thought the “hidden things” type challenges were too boring and so almost everything is just “kill people in various ways” or “engage with this new seasonal mechanic” type things.

Not just the tens of millions in revenue for websites and YouTubers who were formerly “needed” in this process, but a relationship that seemed to benefit both sides, with frequent coverage of the game.
