While I can appreciate a bit, Japan isn't even in the top thirty per 100,000 and their rate has been going down over the years.

Plus they prefer using various household chemicals, hanging and jumping. Overdoses are a thing, but I think they're pretty tight-assed about drugs over there like Germany is. I'm disappointed they don't commit traditional seppuku/harakiri. And none of this explains why they're suddenly using a law to encompass race, LGBT I can maybe see, but race is very bizarre. Olympics might be making this demand, but it's weird given their rules against political shenanigans.

I am under the impression that Japan's moves re: the Olympics are intended solely to make the nation appear more palatable to an international audience, since it will after all be under international scrutiny of some sort as the Olympics are running, with hordes of filthy gaijin roaming the streets. It's the same logic behind raising the age of consent at a federal level, and ordering the removal of pornographic material from its usual place in convenience stores within a certain distance of the games venue. It is highly unlikely that Japanese companies are doing anything other than what they perceive as necessary; the same goes for the Japanese government.

Most of the comments on that website have people trying to redefine the definition of virtue signaling, while convincing themselves that hiring people that are not qualified can be a good thing for the company‘s PR image at large.

Most people were not lying about the fact that North American fans of video gaming are trying to self-insert themselves into the culture and world of Japanese entertainment and attempting to subvert themselves into thinking their power and influence will change the way how Japan makes video games for the current audience.

But I just laugh out loud at that one commenters’ opinion where everyone needs to keep the discussion respectful.

I am under the impression that Japan's moves re: the Olympics are intended solely to make the nation appear more palatable to an international audience, since it will after all be under international scrutiny of some sort as the Olympics are running, with hordes of filthy gaijin roaming the streets. It's the same logic behind raising the age of consent at a federal level, and ordering the removal of pornographic material from its usual place in convenience stores within a certain distance of the games venue. It is highly unlikely that Japanese companies are doing anything other than what they perceive as necessary; the same goes for the Japanese government.

So far, Japan has been on record not wanting to invite foreigners who may have symptoms of COVID-19, while not allowing clapping or cheering that can distract the athletes from performing to their upmost ability. Also, they don’t want any North American politics to disrespect the other nations that are on display, which one might have to wonder what China will do when they host their own Olympics in the future.

I used to live in Japan and befoe covid routinely went back to Japan. Only Tokyo has any real noticable differences and even then, it's not as apocalyptic as people keep making it out to be. Anime is not represenative of Japan at all (I dont even know how to find it on TV most of the time when I'm there if I do want to watch it. I find American cartoons much easier like Spongebob or Simpsons).

Besides, annoying western sperges have been shitting up Japan long before SJW was even a term. Ask any boomer about the old vending machines that used to sell alcohol all the time rather than during specfiic times of day.

I remember reading ages ago (I guess around the time they won the olympic bid) that they wanted to get rid of their "weird Japan" image in time for the olympics, and began scrubbing most of the stereotypical things from public view. They've been infected for a long time. Specifically Nintendo Treehouse, and to a lesser degree Nintendo of America. Fire Emblem Fates being the most infamous example.

I'm so tempted to post a huge off topic list of questions. It'll suffice to say, I've always wanted to go to Japan, but never had the money (then covid happened). Weebs always talk about learning moon runes and travelling to glorious nippon, but they never do. I mentioned weird Japan earlier, but I do wonder how Japan in reality compares to westerners perceptions. I will ask what you recommend seeing as a tourist? The weeb ideal of hanging around akihabara the whole time sound like a bit of a waste.

As for Tokyo and vending machines, what changed?

As for annoying westerners shitting up Japan. I've been hearing about that in relation to Zoe Quinn and some SJWs going to Japan, but I'm curious how they shit it up if all they do is visit some touristy places like the robot cafe, then sit at their hotel complaining on Twitter. I get that sealing yourself off from the host culture is a bad thing, but I don't see how that shits up the rest of Japan as a whole.

Also all the cheaper niche systems have been effectively cleaned out of retro game stores for about a decade in Japan due to many people figuring out just how much they go for in other countries. Stuff like PC Engine especially. Also IIRC it was either 2014 or 2015 where they fucked with their banking system again which initally raised shipping costs.

I mean unless you wanted to check out nerd hovels for things other than games, but it's still easier to get the equivalent amount of stuff in Vancouver or any major US city especially since both countries have a few Japanese bookstore chains that still seem to be active. However amazon also has a bunch of Japanese retailers that ship with free prime shipping on the US and Canada site.

The pandemic fucked up a ton of Japanese arcades, but online tournaments seem to be replacing them.

Depends on what you mean. For me the buck stops at death camps or slave labor. Otherwise I prefer Japan be as weird as possible to my nation. I can't even begin to explain my distress at going to Oktoberfest in Munich and it was less varied than if I just went to my state fair. Fuck, I think my state fair had a wider selection of beer available to everyone, no dumb lines where if you step out you're never allowed back in or anything like that -- you were never gonna be able to visit all of them or even get a taste of every option in Munich. The entire thing was practically the American standard of sanitization and every block repeated itself in attractions; same rides to same "games" in the same layout. Outside of the language everything was... pretty much the same as back home. I guess there were less black people, though, albeit many more browns.

That is why I hate globohomo -- specifically the homo part where everything is the same. I shouldn't travel across the ocean and think to myself, "Fuck, I could have had this experience going a few hours up north." Bad enough they're trying to inflict that shit on Japan's entertainment which is much easier to access here, since that kind of weirdness is fun to watch -- plus their horrors are much more terrifying to me.

Ranting aside... what do you think Japan has to work on? It's definitely not a utopia and is definitely more racist than America, but honestly given how much America is destroying itself trying to appease multiple "oppressed" cultures... I'm not so sure Japan is in the wrong here with their flippant attitude.

They want those tourist bucks so it's going to be pretty baseline and while German beer has purity laws, you kind of have to go out of the main city areas for some of the nitche stuff. Smaller breweries don't want to spend the money to trek all their stuff there. They mostly stay around rural or suburban areas. Like if you're going to do Oktoberfest in a city, it's better to just bar hop. European festivals like that are more geared towards Chinese tourists at this point.

You have stuff like Cameron Apples which are nothing but Guavas soaked in vats of artificial fruit flavoring and color and passed off as a local delicacy or other species of fruits passed off as "Cameron Apples". You'll find shit like that in all major areas where tourists flow through, but they won't be in places that are off the beaten path. Then there's entire things like the Banana Pancake Trail which are notorious tourist traps.
