I got a bunch of pre-order stuff they were getting rid of.

The big one was the Xenoblade Artbooklet for the wii. It was dusty as hell. It's not much of an art book either since it's mostly screenshots and the Monado Archives already exists and that's a much better book.

But some OSTs some other artbooks and just random crap. It was worthwhile to actually check out their bins for once.

past gamestop again on my way to work. they going to shut down the store soon and trying to sell all their stuff real cheap. well, rest in piss i guess.

can someone explain whats the deal with pop dolls? they had them everywhere in the store. are they popular?

Same thing that always happens to companies like that.

Funko Pop Vinyls are cute, dopey looking, little action figures. The company got a few licenses and saw some early success - and expanded greatly into retail stores.

The main #1 problem is that while a single Funko Pop is kind of neat, it's unlikely that many people will want tens or hundreds of them. It's something that a normal person will buy or get as a gift and set on thier desk and never really think about again.

They instead decided to churn these things out by the thousands - basically printing any license they could get their hands on without really thinking about who might actually buy this shit. A lot of retail stores made decent money on them because of the inital rush and decent margin.

For example - There are a large amount of people who like Wonder Woman - and might get a Wonder Woman pop figure.
Problem #1 - There are roughly 10 to 20 different version of the Wonder Woman pop. There's no reason for 20 versions of the same thing. They aren't ALL going to sell.

Problem #2 - The "Wonder Woman" license isn't just Wonder Woman. Even if the "Wonder Woman" (all 20) are selling like hotcakes (they aren't) they made all kinds of dumb ones. You can get a Steve Trevor (her boyfriend-ish guy from the most recent movies) pop, or if that isn't obscure enough for you - you can get one of his assistant (who has even less screentime in the same movie). You can also get one of Patti Jenkins - who is only largely famous for writing and directing the Wonder Woman movie.

There are tons of dumb pops that aren't going to sell. There's pops for basically every conceivable thing imaginable and no market for them. They take up huge amounts of shelf space in a lot of retail stores that are now essentially stuck with them.

My local gamestop, for example, probably has a good 10-15% of their retail space covered with these things that I would never actually buy. They've also got shirts taking up a bunch of space, as well as statutes, stuffed animals, and all kinds of other shit that really belongs in a Hot Topic and not a video game store. I would argue that a major problem that gamestop has is that only 60% of the store is dedicated to the product in question - with the other 40% being shitty slow (or not) moving merchandise.

they're like Nendroid or any other SD line from Japan, but sort of a shit design
I'll give them props for nailing down probably the most ridiculous span of licenses for a common toy concept since Mego

Well, I got an XB1 right at the start of the lockdowns, so the B2G2 might actually be an ok way for me to fill out my collection as they burn.

OTOH, I’ve been boycotting them since 2015... I had gone in to buy Fire Emblem Fates, and when I’d called, I was told that they still had 1 Collector’s Edition left. Went screaming down there on lunch break, get to the store “I don’t know who told you that, but they only sent us 2 copies and they were already picked up by the people who preordered.”

And then, as I was paying for the original versions, one of the cashiers muttered to the other “I’m pretty sure that we had a spare in the back, lemme go check.” And he whispered back “No, Brian already said he wanted it.”

and so I walked out and never went back.

Double post, but it’s a later discovery so forgive me...

Another example of eiher GameStop being scummy or incompetent. I just went to use Gamestop’s B2G2 thing, but there were 5 games I wanted. So I said, ok, I’ll add all 5 to the cart and it’ll give me 2 free and 3 for $10 and I’ll even have enough to get free shipping.

Nope. They tried to give me $1.25 off each game, and then charge me $42.50 but with FREE shipping.

I think it really says something when your store locations get looted and people leave the funco Pops untouched like the vegetables at a chinese buffet.

I really hope a picture of a looted Gamestop with a pristine Funko shelf shows up somewhere, that's hilarious
Your wish is my command...

Hey GameStop? NOBODY WANTS THIS SHIT. NOT EVEN FOR FREE.

Haven't gone to Gamestop since they fucked me on canceling my Final Fantasy VII Remake pre order before Corona hit. Told me they'd just refund me if I didn't pick it up while they were closed, but I have always suspected they are going to try to offload it on me whenever I go back. I still owe like 30 bucks on it.

Still, I get the suspicion they are closing soon so maybe i'll see if I can get my 30 bucks credit back and get something used. Worse they can say is no I guess.

Man fuck Gamestop

Both GameStops near me have shut down. I hope everyone employed at those shitholes get back on their feet quickly and painlessly.

GAMESTOP POWER TO THE PAYERS... oh whoops I mean players.

i wish they'd just line up all the used DS/3DS games on a shelf instead of locking the carts in display cases. NONE OF THIS SHIT IS THAT VALUED LMFAO.

So are there any good alternatives aside from the internet?

I prefer to actually own my stuff and the local department stores only stock the bestsellers.
