It's out of a 13" barrel compared to 20/22 inch 7.62 barrels. Even with the same muzzle energy the impulse delivery will be worse for the .227, but it has even more energy and a shorter impulse so it will be doubly worse. A 20" M16 will shoot softer than a 10" gun and the 10" gun certainly has less muzzle energy, so it's more about the final impulse rather than raw energy for semi automatics. And then a marching band went through and everybody applauded?
ETA: for the record, .277 Fury has a muzzle energy only about 10% higher than bog-standard 7.62mm NATO. I imagine recoil might be slightly harsher due to the higher velocity but I question whether anyone would pass the Pepsi test between .227 Fury and 7.62mm NATO on recoil impulse alone.
