Didn’t P365s have issues with firing? I recall something about the trigger not resetting and failures to extract

No idea, I haven't personally ran into any issues but i've only been to the range with it like 10ish times. Been for the most part genuinely happy with it.

I'm sure They've had minor issues, I know a guy who's had some issues. An early serial 380 model which seemed to have some issues with powder burn. it has a lot of internal safeties to prevent discharge without a trigger pull. The only instance I can find is the trigger return spring being broken and pulling the trigger wouldn't fire it but shaking it would. The p365 is a different platform entirely. Sig almost seems to want it to replace the p320. I wonder why..

I wonder why no one's ever tried to make a shotgun with a Farquhar-Hill type operating system? Afaik, the main issue you run into is the high variability of shotgun loads. You have to tune your gun for a specific load, otherwise it won't cycle reliably. But the FH system was designed to cycle cleanly on highly variable loads, and supposedly reduces felt recoil somewhat. Seems like a perfect fit to me.

Not an issue with the long recoil operated shotguns like the Browning Auto-5 and Genesis GEN-12 which can run anything with no adjustment or maintenance beyond cleaning the barrel/bolt.

Ivan is correct when he says that all the complex gas and inertia systems used by the Italian/Russian shotguns are worse designs.

Sorry, I think I accidentally kicked this off by whispering shotgun things at him. Actually I am not sorry bc he ran to the other end of shotgun history and started shoveling up everything I hadn't even had time to look at. He's doing a great job of unpacking the Italian designs that I had barely scratched the surface on.

I agree that internet gun culture is so focused on tactical that it has ignored the high value of shotgun sports. Easily some of the most enjoyable shooting you can do.

He's not wrong about weirdos using shotguns as slow rifles, that's an annoying new trend. But I blame that on Clint Smith/Thunder Ranch.
He's wrong about long recoil though, because it sucks. Everything sucks. We have it documented, I found a paper in the trash that says auto shotguns suck.

If I'm recalling correctly it was a problem with sig's special ammo specifically designed for the p365 that caused the issues. Something to do with the primers on the first batches of ammo. I don't remember if it was that they used too hard of primers or seated them incorrectly but I believe the speculation at the time was that it was one of those two.
The consensuses was that the gun was fine if you didn't use the ammo that sig advertised as custom made for the gun.
 
I remember some of the early reviews of the P365 noted that the firing pin would drag downwards on the primer, eventually causing the firing pin to snap. They fixed that pretty quickly.

I didn't take that particular statement to mean 'Long recoil as a shotgun operating system hasn't been improved upon'. I took it to mean 'By the time tactical shotguns had better self-loading operating systems than long recoil, they'd been superseded by SMGs/PCCs/assault rifles/carbines.

No, he actually means that any other system is unreliable. Gas operated shotguns need to be cleaned, inertial is based upon being light and having a stiff shoulder which is true but long recoil shotguns(Auto-5, Rem 1187, etc) require adjustment between different shot types and beats itself to death in neglect whereas gas and inertial don't face that problem.

The hellcat does this too. Mine has a bit of striker drag. I think it's just an issue with that form factor. I should look into fixing it
