they are the future in the sense that most AKMs for sale in the USA will soon be PSA rifles. thus they are the future. in time i think the will likely rise to WASR levels. the fact that they are not pot metal pipe bombs puts them ahead of the rest of the American AK market. (KUSA not included).

If the WWSD project was just a marketing ploy to meme the polymer lower back into existence I wouldn't think twice but goddamn they went overboard promoting this as the ultimate minmax build.
A modern production pencil barrel without the POI shift, anything that isn't a cheese grater quad rail and a stock that shifts the weight to the rear like the VLTOR ones would get 90% of the benefits if not actually work better because the point of balance of the rifle can affect perceived weight more than the number on the scale.

If you go out of your way to make it short and light, like the entire point of your build is to be really lightweight, then I think the plastic lower could be well worth it. If you're already going for a light 14.5" pencil barrel and some simple generic CAR15/M4 handguards, I can't imagine that the gun will end up noticeably front-heavy.
