That is a mold issue. Either they have fill problems or mold manufacturing issues. Do we know what shop they worked with to get this done? Cause there is a world of difference between machining a part and the engineering that goes into mold design.

Ironic considering one of the major claims from Ian and Cucksarda is the superior quality of modern polymer. I don't care about the argument but it's funny that their godly "inRange approved" polymer receivers have widespread manufacturing defects.

The mold might be okay aside from fitment issues but mating the two halves is where the failure is quite clear. I can forgive fractions of millimeters but holy shit does this look bad for the regulated part of a gun.

Apparently the way this flat is milled is "normal" and exists on a large portion of the receivers. Looks like a DIY project with a hand sander.

Other than cosmetic, 90% of the issues seem to be related to the safety where people are finding they have a weak detent or too strong of a detent. You're supposed to stretch the detent spring 1/8" to get it to work properly. Stretching a spring past the resting position isn't really a robust solution IMO.

I bought one for the novelty, as well as just having another lower. Mine is very similarly rough on the top of the stock as well as the bottom of the pistol grip

Also, wouldn't the holes for the takedown pins be off as well if one half of the lower is higher than the other?

Any halfway decent tool and die maker will ensure they match before installation. There is a whole section of manufacturing devoted to quality control in these thing. In addition that looks like it was done by someone who has no clue how molds go together. A good mold design has alignment pins and along with a whole set of rods and bolts that ensure no movement of the mold faces. In addition injection molding is so wide spread that just about everything but the mold faces can be ordered from a catalog. This screams of amateur work with people who have no experience with mold work.

I’ve been ignoring the whole fiasco except for what I see here. Can anyone shed more light on how much finish machining is done?

It depends, but I can only assume the only alignment they do is based on the takedown pins due to inconsistencies with the grip/buttstock.

Another guy had a breakage in the buffer cavity that proceeded to become an obstruction, but he wont inspect further and instead opts to run it until it dies.

I do tool & die but never was part of the sonic welding process. Most likely they some warpage issues taking them out of the mold which made aligning the two halves difficult.

WhoBusTank is right in that most designs usually have a bunch of pins and a internal rib directly molded into the part. I can't find a picture of the core side of their mold, only the cavity side so I can't comment on what features are on the inside.

I was able to find this picture form 8 months ago that shows their sonic welding fixture.

Maybe they just fixed the cycle times (cooling, etc.) which made the halves more uniform? Or they figured out a different fixture.

Ahh. Thats probably one of the horizontal ribs inside of the buffer tube.

This is why they are adamant about not using anything but a JP or milspec buffer. Can imagine how bad those ribs look after 1000 rounds regardless.

I can understand that, but with all the requirements while boasting its superiority you lose the savings in the initial cost with the purchase of specific buffers.

You can try and force the outside of the part into the shape of the fixture while welding, but that doesn't mean the part wont bow and flex inwards with no core.

The amount of variance I've seen so far in WWSD receivers is so piss-poor, it really makes me wonder about the shop that made the molds & ran them.

I wouldn't be surprised if the only gauging they do is with an OD size jig & AR buffer tube used as a GO/NO-GO gauge, after welding. If they didn't fit (and seems like most of them), the secondary operator ran a swivel knife around it and shave off enough to make it pass.

A top-tier mold design has ZERO flashing. The last company I worked at wouldn't have allowed ANY flashing on a part. It was straight to packaging or annealing from the mold. There was millions of dollars into the engineering of that mold that YOU were running the mold wrong if you were getting flashing.

At least not until the mold ran hundreds of thousands of times and wore down...

Functionality is one thing since even a Filipino dirtfarmer can make a working STEN out of his busted plumbing pipes, but the presentation of a controversial product with limited customization options based on an endlessly customizable platform is kinda important.

Unfortunately the youtube algorithm can't get a hint and recommended me one of TG's videos and this is exactly what I described earlier - a lot of newcomers are simply repackaging content from the big name channels (that aren't that original either).

The video doesn't "plagiarize" anything in particular but it's telling that in a one year period of nationwide ammo shortage the female stolen valor finally decided to do a video on low round count drills after a big name youtuber dropped his.

Good lord you weren't kidding I just went and looked through TG's channel and there's not a single video I would call original. It's all just repackaged content from other guntubers (mainly GT) and the super boiler plate videos like "my AR setup". This might be worse than the tranny thing.
