Generation War is a mini-series consisting of three 90min episodes following the lives of five German friends during WWII. Wilhelm, who aspires to be an army officer and seek glory. Friedhelm, his more sensitive younger brother. Charlotte, a kind, innocent, girl with a crush on Wilhelm who volunteers as a nurse. Greta, a bartender aspiring singer, and dirty whore. And Viktor the token Jew who exists to make the show not all about "Nazis" so it could actually get made.

It spans from just before Operation Barbarossa (German Invasion of Russia) through to the end of the war and we see this group of characters grow and adapt, or fail to adapt, to the horrors of War.

I brought it up in another thread about the various HBO series but I think it deserves its own thread to both spread awareness of its existence and facilitate dedicated discussion.

Here's a clip to give you a taste of how good its battle scenes are.

Torrent Links Small | Medium | Large
I recommend the small one, the medium one is twice the size and actually looks worse. I haven't tested the large one because 11gb is egregious for a 3 episode series.

Small is on the left.

Never watched it, but I saw your post in the other thread and I definitely want to check it out. Can never get enough war kino.

alot of its comprised of talking and dialog, that clip you showed was the best part and one of the only times you see combat in the show
That's not how I remember it. Sure there's dialogue and character moments but I remember a good deal of violence as well. The fact that we get to know these characters makes the violence more impactful.

If all you want is constant detached violence go play a game like Hell Let Loose.

Yes which is why I said:

If you want all violence and no story a video game delivers.
you are being a smarmy cock sucker, the entire show is four and a half hours, the main selling point being that clip op presented only happens twice, more time is given to a jewish side character who joins the restance. i just watched it a month ago you cannot lie to me about what happens.

Oh fuck off. For one I am OP here. Second, the clip is not meant to be "the main selling point" its just meant to show off a combat scene and they definitely happen more than twice. The main selling point is the concept of "Band of Brothers but German" and Band of Brothers is not a non-stop action fest either.

If all you want is action go play a fucking video game. Some of us want a well rounded war story.

no i have seen that clip posted everywhere and its the one you chose as an introduction. you could just admit its light on scene's like that, its not an attack on your ego

I've always been interested in this part of the war, and the show looks great. Thanks for sharing.

The actions of others matter little to me here.
its the one you chose as an introduction
Its the one I picked as an example of a combat scene because it was the first one to pop up when I looked. Probably because its popular.
Go back, re-read my post. I never said it was an action heavy show, I spent more time discussing the characters, and I explicitly said this was an example of a battle scene. At no point did I say there are a lot of battle scenes.

Howabout you just admit you made an assumption about my intentions based on preconceived notions regarding discourse of this show?

Thanks for pointing this one out, going to give it a watch. I particularly like how the combat scene accurately referenced German assault tactics at the time - up to and including the utter lack of anti-tank weaponry and mechanized elements for the average infantry pleb forcing them into do or die moments. There is a huge amount of unknown facets about the Eastern front missing in the mainstream English historiography which makes it nice seeing foreign media explore it.

well thats too fucking bad because everyone seems to love that one scene you're self included. but that type of proper formation fighting has less screen time than the jewish guy being a partizan

They should have gone full "Come and See" level of war crimes depiction instead of sanitizing with their myth of the clean Wehrmacht vs dirty Waffen-SS. They really pulled their punches with Charlotte the nurse not getting raped. By the finale, all the characters should have been dead.

To be fair, it was a made for a TV series and they could probably only get away with so much rating and writing wise.
