Ghost Recon - Let's talk about Ghost Recon

For me, there hasn't been a good Ghost Recon game ever. Not even the first one.

Did you suck at the first two or something? I personally think they're the best of the series. Future Soldier was also alright and one of the first games to do the complete gun porn thing.

I feel like Wildlands and Breakpoint would be better as Far Cry games. Your already in a lawless land to take down a charismatic villain who has a philosophy. El Sueno and Walker would be amazing villains if done right.

el sueno certainly was till SURPRISE SUDDENLY HE WAS TRAFFICKING KIDS which came out of fucking nowhere and felt like "oh shit people like our villain too much, wat do?!?!?"

walker too but was handicapped hard by the writing (and pacing, like wtf ubisoft?!)

I don't have a problem with that, cartels do that stuff all the time, I just feel those two don't belong in what's supposed to be a serious military game like Ghost Recon. The main character could actually speak and interact with the villains instead of getting a quick clip of them if they were in Far Cry. You could explore them more, especially in Sueno and Walker's case. Sueno's past and Walker's philosophy seem very interesting.
How'd we go from this:
To him barely appearing in game?

what ticked me off regarding el sueno was that he didn't really start that out as a cartel thug, but had an actual (understandable) goal and some ethics, like the whole "I don't lie". so the whole thing came out of left field because suddenly he's retarded and just a thug. didn't really make much sense when he was portrayed as being smarter right from the start.

didn't really mind the tone and them fitting in it, tom clancy stuff was always like that more or less, so at least for me it was par the course. never played GRAW (and it's been decades since I played GR1) tho, so the shift might come from there.

What goal was that? And I took the lie ethic the same way his religion was, a cheap way of protecting himself. Like Escobar did with all the schools and hospitals he built.

it's been a while, but from what I remember it was mainly not getting shit on a poorfag kid, but then not just becoming the biggest nutter in the pond, but also lifting the rest of the country up (the supply line missions go into it with him simply paying better than growing coffee for starbucks). of course it's debatable if that was just an excuse, but I think there were some missions or bits that go a bit further into it, like outright shutting some shit down he had an issue with (can't remember what it was, think it was a mission somewhere in the SE). but even without that he was portrayed of being fully aware who he is and what he is - and to build that kind of empire you had to have some brain and competence.
that's why it came out of nowhere, to this day I don't even know why he fucking did it or suddenly was ok with. certainly not for the money, so for what exactly? simply didn't make much sense for me, because I assumed he would be at least smart enough to know it would never fly and he got rid of people for less shit too.

felt similar of shitty writing you see when they try to hammer in "see, he's really a bad guy", like nazis being sociopathic pricks that torture puppies in a cutscene for fun, to the point their fellow countrymen would toss a grenade in their bunk immediately.

Steam had an 80% off sale for the franchise so I nabbed both Wildlands and Breakpoint.

A few hours into Wildlands right now. On ultra settings the game still looks pretty good, though I get annoying asset pop-ins even with draw distance turned up to max. Gameplay is good so far -- scouting an area and then having your squad pick off the enemies can be fun, though the squad AI tends to be either absolute killing machines or brain-dead retards with nothing in between. I actually find the amount of guns to be kind of annoying because nothing ever feels like a decent upgrade, instead it's always just slight increments. The skill system seems completely pointless and tacked-on. I avoid any side mission that deals with planes because they control like absolute shit. I also don't like any mission that deals with trying to disable a convoy because your squad is too stupid to aim for the driver or otherwise disable the vehicle and you quickly accrue a dozen other enemy vehicles coming at you.

The story and writing is so far fine. I do like the various notes and recordings that flesh out the cartel members. I wish the main character was either a rookie silent protag or a more pre-defined character. Same with the squad; giving them unique personalities, backstories, and specialties would've been more interesting. Instead you and your team feel like amorphous blobs, which I'm assuming is largely due to the game being meant to be played in online co-op.

Breakpoint has the same issue when you want to make a perfect sync shot and at the last second one of the AI loses the sight of its target and you have to either wait an eternity or fire anyway.

Seeing everyone here talking about Wildlands in such a positive note makes me happy that i'm not alone in blasting Fortunate Son while piloting a Chopper with miniguns on my way to fuck up a cartel ran by Bolivian Vin Diesel.
next stop: EDF with this

if you like the ghost recon games you better enjoy wildland and breakpoint. because it is last woke free military shooter we will be getting from ubisoft. breakpoint from 2019 is very based, there is no body type a or b, the toilets in the game says male and female and its no trans toilets like dead space remake. also there is two missions that would never be made today. like you have a side mission where a mother need you to go talk sense into her teen daughter. since the daughter have gone blue hair activist, you go find the daughter and you are given the option to talk some sense into her. you basically act like a dad and tell her to quit the shit and listen to her mother. then you also have mission where a female asian agents act like a girlboss and blows up a building with innocent people. and yet again you are given the option to call out this asian woman about the shit she have done, there is more but these two missions did stand out for me. this might not be a big deal, but this would never happen today. after seeing how woke watchdogs legion become in 2020 and how feminist bs farcry6 was in 2021. so if we get a new ghost recon game at all, just expect the worst.

Quick question, were FC6 & Watch Dogs Legion made by Ubisoft Paris? Cuz Ubi Paris made Wildlands, and I assume Breakpoint as well.

Ubisoft Toronto made both of those from what I'm reading.

I think the first Ghost Recon game was fun but in the classic-game way. Played it with a friend of mine and as goofy as the plot was, a lot of it was still a legitimate challenge to finish with only two people and no AI, only limited respawns (The border checkpoint in particular comes to mind). Expansions were even more insane in the difficulty curve. Advanced Warfighter 1 and 2 were surprisingly decent and polished, but I found myself nostalgic for the absolute aggressiveness of the AI from the first entry; the Mexicans didn't particularly challenge me tactically as much as they would just occasionally jeopardize a run by firing off an unlucky round to the dome. Really the only exceptions to that were MG positions, snipers, and what we came to call "The Mexican in the shed". Levels were great, though, I spent a lot of the time talking about how much I wished someone would find a way to port them over into Arma 3 so the AI wasn't so hopelessly outmatched.

Interesting. If Toronto's the one making the SJW shit, while the Paris division's going "No, fuck you," the we might be looking at a Disco Elysium-style schism within Ubisoft where one sect of the devs wanna go full wokie, while another has to tell them "No."

That wouldn't entirely surprise me. After all, remember that the Anno series, which levels pot shots at pretty much every side of the spectrum in some way over the course of their titles, isn't part of either and is made by Ubisoft Blue Byte out in Germany. Montreal's the one handling Rainbow 6, so there's your answer for why Siege has been intent on adding trans, fat, or gay operators the past few years.

breakpoint was way back in 2019, we are now in 2024 and ubisoft have sunk pretty far into the woke bs. so paris division might not have much a say anymore.

Perhaps you're right, but going back to Disco Elysium, that did not stop the devs from telling the lead to suck it.

Remember, this is the same Ubisoft that once had a game where the bad guys had a raised fist as their emblem before Current Year made them remove that, and that's not going into the fact that those same bad guys were clearly inspired by the George Floyd Riots, since the timeline between those moments match up.

Bro legit just said that the planes control like ass. I will admit, to an extent, they do, but that's cuz planes have a steep learning curve as to how they control. Once you figure it out, you'll be doing stunts, and clean landings.

lot of those old devs got purged in 2020 because #metoo, which is why ubisoft can't produce anything worth shit anymore.
