All they had to do was not be assholes to over half their potential fanbase and this move could have been just another "meh" Sony nostalgia cash grab (like the new Robocop), but they had to make seeing it a political statement.
They really fucked themselves over because the political side they chose probably would have seen the move no matter what (fat, ugly feminists who would love it no matter what because "muh leading female roles"), while also alienating the people who were most likely on the fence about watching it (men).
Ironically, if this flops hard enough, it could convince movie execs that women aren't fit for roles in Hollywood blockbusters, and it would all be Feig's fault.

They've turned seeing Ghostbusters, converting your friends, and buying all the merchandise, into a feminist obligation and it's kind of genius.

Sony was deleting youtube comments left & right that were not showering praise to this movie and it's genius director. But the swarm of negative comments simply overwhelmed their shill squad.

Depends, Ebert may have given it three-two stars if only becuase he could be convinced in support social agendas in films (and given how he disliked gamers, maybe could have been convinced this was a GG issue (and I bet he would hate the fuck out of GG)). Still, he would probably be indifferent about it at the end and his review would make clear that is not that good and was mostly pity points (as some animated/comedy films got this treatement from him).

I doubt he would championed it with the intensity that half of film critics are doing, in any case.
