All I see here is a child with a computer crying over a good comedic analysis of the new Ghostbusters movie. Reddit is great, isn't it? Such a fair and nice platform for discussion.

Barely making a profit at this stage right now isn't really an achievement though lol, it's like you borderline passed on the easiest exam paper and celebrating about it: You may have done it, but it's still pathetic.

Still, it breathed new life into the brand. The old ghostbusters brand was quite dead after the second movie.

New and innovative story lines are too much of a gamble. Hollywood and the industry need franchises these days to support huge budgets. The genderbending of ghostbusters may have been the innovative risk that had to be taken to bring this thing back from the dead.

The original ghostbusters was mostly done by SNL Alumni and this one is now being done by SNL Alumni as well.

Lets be honest for a second, how many SNL alumni are still relevant these days to do a remake that can support a franchise. Not many except for Wiig and McCarthy. Samburg's movies have been flops and Ferrell is not an easy fit for this as well. The others are just not there yet to support it either.

It did manage to make the franchise slightly relevant now indeed and the concept of female Ghostbusters is not bad either, but the sadly along with the shitstorms involved, the movie sadly isn't doing well even though the movie is pretty average at best, which I'll give credit for not being the worst as what people make out to be.

genderbending
innovative
yeah okay
although i admit the movie isn't just genderbending there's a bit more to it

all this talk of MUH REPRESENTATION though...
is it too much to ask instead of going "yeah this is dog shit BUT WATCH IT OR U HATE WOMEN"
why not go "I want a female character i can relate to in good media"
shit like this sends a message that all you need to do is slap the word "VAGINA" or "BLACK" on a stick and people will flock to it
maybe sony will make a movie of a sack of potatoes with "STRONG WYMMYN" written on it sitting in a corner for 2 hours
it seems to be what the people want

Can't deny that. Hollywood and the Industry are afraid of risk. They will reboot anything and everything these days. The male SNL Alumni's are either too old, odd of a fit, or too unknown to carry a franchise by themselves.

Wiig and McCarthy are about it. McKinnon is a rising star who has a lot of promise at the moment. They could have tried a combination of Jason Sadeikis, Fred Armisen, Andy Samburg, and Bill Hader; but they are still rather unknown and none of them have a very successful movie under their belts.

The flap with Leslie Jones hurt her, but they can write that off as salty neckbeards trolling her. Lets be honest, neckbeards are easy to laugh off as idiots. She should be fine as long as she can keep her cool on twitter in the future. Personally, I think Maya Rudolph would have been much better than Leslie Jones. Leslie Jones is very unproven and her flap with twitter showed it.

They went a bit too hard with making it a cause celeb. Truth is that the SNL women these days have had a lot more success than the men. Using this as a publicity tactic was very heavy handed.

Still, you have to remember Neckbeard NEETs are an easy target these days. They are one of the few groups left you can laugh at besides Right-Wing Evangelical Fundies. Making your publicity campaign lampoon them was an easy choice.

It's also a group stupid enough to swallow the bait, hook, line, sinker and the entire fucking rest of the boat.

I mean, Sony just had to rile them up a little and a shitton went "HURR Make me sammich bitch! Women R shit!" and kept going for weeks.

RLM are gentlemen and scholars. I just like the idea that these three guys triggered a shitload of the internet just by saying a movie is shit.

Ya know, speaking of the merchandise, the article talks about a successful line of action figures in stores and I can kind of believe it.

My local Walmart only seems to be carrying the male 1984 Ghostbusters figures, though; I've only seen the female 2016 Ghostbusters at Toys R' Us. Maybe it's the sales of the classic Ghostbusters figures skewing the numbers. (I think it's only the second time that there have been mass-market action figures based on the original movie and not the cartoon, the first time being a line of figures Mattel released in 2009, for the film's 25th anniversary.)

I was at Walmart yesterday, and almost all the 2016 ghostbuster toys have been clearanced out and replaced by the "classic series" original team figures, and also big stay-puft man and slimer plushies.

For whatever reason, the new ghostbuster car toys seem to have avoided the clearance rack and are still there, but otherwise it's all been replaced by the original characters.

^ If you're referring specifically to the Ghostbusters Hot Wheels cars, they're part of the ongoing "Entertainment" premium series (featuring all-metal body and chassis and "Real Riders" synthetic rubber tires) and would be carried by the store regardless of whether or not they're getting rid of the other Ghostbusters movie tie-in toys.

(I'm still looking for the "Entertainment" release of the new Ecto-1, but I can't find it anywhere. :shakesfist: )

I am sure the number of older ghostbusters toys that were purchased before this movie got made was significantly lower. Fact is that the movie accomplished its mission. It revived the brand/franchise from the dead.

People may not like the spin that was placed on it, but I will ask you again - which SNL Alumni could do a remake like this anymore. The recent male Alumni are just not strong enough to have a hope of carrying a 9 figure title. These 4 SNL Alumni barely did.

I will also remind you that Harold Ramis(Original Egon) is dead and the original cast refuses to do a ghostbuster movie without him.

People can be bitter about this all they want, but at the end of the day - a male ghostbusters remake was dead on arrival. This was the only way it could have been done if at all.
