He had actually come really near to dying very near before this. He had appendicitis that turned into peritonitis. So a lot of the jokes are about how he'd nearly died.

Good God, I just realized Artie Lange outlived Gottfried. What a world.

Lange survived his good friend Norm! I think two years ago people talked about Lange's certain and immediate demise when he showed up in court with that collapsed nose. And people have talked about Lange like that for 20 years. It's like god is punishing him, he's alive just so he can see everyone around him die.
