GLITCH Productions - From the guys that brought you the Super Mario 64 bloopers

I liked it enough to be hopeful for more. Animation was for the most part solid and I adore the overall design of the world and characters. Voice acting is also solid, though I did have a rough time understanding what they were saying in the opening chase scene (that was probably more sound design issues than voice acting to be honest) but I didn't have that issue for the rest of the episode so whatever.

But that pacing can be far far too fast at times. The overall story itself was also far too cryptic about the foundation of this world and how it works. I get the gist but only that. I would have liked something more concrete to keep me anchored in what the fuck was going on from scene to scene. Its also a bit too obvious with who the characters are and what they want. I know this might sound contradictory considering the line prior so the best way I can describe it is that I wanted to understand the world more and leave a bit more mystery to the individual characters wants and needs.

Side note: I hate how adventure time and Gravity falls have pushed so many other animated shows to do this background "lore" bullshit instead of just telling us a fucking story straight up without the need to dig around every scene for fucking clues. This episode was rife with that crap and I am so fucking exhausted by this shit.

I haven't had the time yet to sit down and watch it, I was just posting it here for the thread.
Murder Drones did the exact same shit so that's already a red flag for me. Oh boy.

Honestly I completely agree, it's a very poor way of conveying your story in my humble opinion and I wish they'd stop doing it. But they won't.

Very delightful experience. My opinions are basically the same as @Chilson, so I'd like to add that I loved the animation style, it feels like a "dark, twisted up version" of a Tim Burton movie, but in the best way possible. I also agree that the pacing felt like an ADHD trip, but I wouldn't say I disliked it, just found it different.

I was also so surprised to see how... "mature" it was? Not sure if that's the right word, but you know, I was expecting to hear characters saying some outdated memes and have "lol random quirky XD" dialogue like the other GLITCH shows, but no, the script is actually well written and most of its humor come from the visuals themselves.

For a guy who worked on literal who short films and Hazbin Hotel backgrounds, my expectations were definetly surprassed. I'd say this is my favorite pilot from all the GLITCH shows I watched, hopefully I shall say the same for the rest of the series, because it definetly got me hooked.

I rewatched American Dragon: Jake Long recently and was impressed with how well the series handled its myth arc. It set up its heroes, set up its villains, everyone who needed an arc went through one, and those who didn't need an arc weren't forced into changing for the sake of it.
Hell, it even managed to give the bitchy, one-dimensional cheerleader a small arc without having her pull a 180 in character.

Took me back to a simpler time before animation writers felt the need to prove how deep they were by inserting some secret lore on an ARG website somewhere to show off to autists.

Gaslight District has some very wonderful animation which definitely feels like the strongest feature it has so far, though it hasn't really hooked me as it is a bit confusing with the plot, but I'm interested to see where it goes since I think the father-daughter bond between the human and butcher is pretty cute.

First impressions?, i think it was pretty good.

The cool stuff:
  • The art direction, it nailed the sickly horror aesthetic it was going for the most part
  • The father-daughter dynamic between Ken and Mel is sweet, and it looks like it would form the emotional core of the story.
  • They really went all out for this pilot, goddamn
The dull stuff:
  • The introduction was too exposition dump-y for my tastes.
  • The bread guy and Jack, the other major characters, are portrayed to be too cartoony and one-dimensional, im not sure how they play into the character dynamics of the cast since we given so little.
  • They REALLY went all out for this pilot, to the point im not sure how they can escalate this, it already felt like a season finale in stakes.

It has really nice design and animation. Not sure how much ramifications the pilot will have considering how it ends, but I'm hopeful.

I didn't feel it did it too much. Everything important is straight up told to the viewer, or at least implicated so it's not likely to miss. The whole setting is a mystery how it even reached this point.

Gaslight District was very good. I didn't have a hard time following the plot, though it was very fast-paced. I like that the world is immortal, so there is a promise of copious amounts of cartoon violence and brutal slapstick, which is something I find lacking in modern animation. Mel's voice actor sounds a bit too sweet/young for how she looks, but I guess that's the point.

My only beef is that I thought some of the storyboarding was too snappy. Some actions they were trying to shortcut by not animating it and relying on cuts/sound design didn't read well to me. Where did they go just now? How did they get there? Why did the direction change? Wait did they just hit that guy? But, tbh, they would fool the average viewer.

I wonder where they'll go next. Some of the seven heavenly virtues made appearances, so I wonder what the others who weren't featured in the pilot are going to be like. Them all being, I guess, divine machinery with organic brains is interesting. The Butcher eating Temperance's brain and having some sort of affect gave me the impression he'll be the antagonist while Mel has to struggle with defying and defeating the "dad" whose approval she seeks.

Gives me a lot to think about. Made me feel things. Can't say that much about most animated "pilots" these days.

I am really interested in seeing what eating the brains of someone who “can’t die” does to a person. That green light of “rebirth” while inside Ken was definitely implying something big.
Are the angels also zombies?

Also am I the only one that looked at the big angel bird and immediately thought of Father-Mother from Xeno Clash?

It's most likely the classic "pilot episode" desperation, throwing everything they can at the wall with the hope of attracting as many people as possible so they can get over the hurdle of getting greenlit.
How they continue the story after this point is anyone's guess. I just hope they don't pull some gay "it was just a dream" sequence.

By my guess, I think the revival happens from either the mark they have on their bodies or the brain, in this case he ate both, so maybe he's just a brain perpetually being digested and reviving inside Ken's stomach.
Plus, there's the whole theory some guy on Twitter cracked about the angels losing their bodies and being just a brain - So I assume he's kinda stuck there until Ken does something to it.

I did not see James Lee's name anywhere in the art direction department, but this is the first time in forever I had a gut feeling someone was inspired by him. High contrast, intense use of glow, high emphasis on blank eyes and teeth alongside just amazing exaggeration.

And even if they weren't inspired by him, it's nice to see something new out there that resembles his craft.
