of their shows are basically meta internet humor + creepy stuff,
"Oh you think it's one thing but it's actually another thing and it's SCARY or something!"
Its not even specifically this for me, I just feel like western animation has a chronic inability to conduct itself without forcing some sort of levity into it, even if it means putting it where it isn't really needed.
Murder drones is supposed to be about this cosmic horror coming to kill literally everything and everyone and it can't help itself but crack millennial-tier "erm... that just happened." jokes, TADC's writing is a bit better IMO but it's fundamental concept is just built for me to get disconnected from it. Its supposed to be this gut wrenching scenario A La "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" but then puts it into a WACKY scenario with some rather WACKY humor only a troon would find scary. Hazbin, helluva is IMO the worst offender, it advertises itself as this super serious adult animation, and it's got sex and gore and it's like mature, man. Its not. Its a 13 year old's idea of maturity.
And I'm sitting here metaphorically screaming to myself because none of this is computing with me. Everything about these shows are telling me "you should be invested in this because we're SERIOUS." And I'm just not, instead I'm in this of corporeal state of frustration and disappointment because it just fails connect at a fundamental level for me. It makes me wanna tear my hair out.
I have shilled this specific SFM animation multiple times and I will do it again because it's by far the closest thing that's come close to my personal vision of indie animation, and western animation as a whole.
Its half life, but imagine this atmosphere, filmography, pacing, etc. expanded into a 15 part series, set in an original universe.
Stuff like this video is what gets me. THIS is why I keep coming back, THIS is what I think western animation needs. I don't hate Live action, but it's been played out for me. Give me Come and See, but animated, give me no country for old men, but animated. Give me Utopia, but animated. If you're familiar with HOI4 mods, imagine old TNO getting an animated series. Imagine putting the HRE, or SS ordensstaat to animation. It would breathe so much life into the medium for me. I could list many more examples that come to mind, but I think you get the point.
I know with absolute certainty that animation is a medium capable of telling "mature" stories without falling into eastern/anime tropes that I just cannot stand, because I've seen it with my own eyes. It can be so much more than the eternal GA-rated cartoon, yet nothing beyond a few short films has hit the X for me.
This is why KOG and the gaslight district actually pique my interest. Regarding the former, I've seen Dana's original artwork and I think it would be cool to see it fully realized in an animated show, Dana terrace is also why I'm EXTREMELY reserved about it because I can't help but get the feeling it's gonna be filled with what I mentioned before. Something is gonna be put into it that just stops me from getting fully invested into it. I've seen The Owl House, and while there several different factors at play here, The rot goes deep. Even more so with the gaslight district because all the guy has done is HB and some Lo-fi indie short AFAIK. This does not spark confidence for me.
This is why I continually try to support indie animation and the democratization of it no matter how Cynical I get. I can see the potential. I can taste it. But i don't think anything has ever truly blossomed. Its frustrating.
