Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Long Live the King

Chicago would be great, but they had to come in from the ocean, so that's why they went with Boston. Maybe if there's a tunnel in the hollow earth that leads to the Chicago area, they could go there one day.

I've noticed the movie wanted to play things up a bit more in the cliché department, especially when it came to the human antagonists like Emma. The Titans got the special treatment, of course, but I think that was more of an expansion on previous lore. Mike mentioned both in the DVD commentary and on Twitter tonight that by putting the "god" back in "Godzilla", it meant having to actually make him a god again.

In the past Toho movies (mostly early movies), Godzilla was mentioned to be a local god given physical form through atomic energy. They never really expounded on it, though, closest they did was GMK when he was practically a zombie possessed by tormented souls of Japan's victims up to WWII and the guardians had to come in to stop him because he was virtually indestructible. 2014's Godzilla didn't exactly call him a god, but it was mentioned his role in the ecosystem was to enforce Nature's balance which then was expanded upon in the sequel in that he is a living god worshiped but then forgotten. Then Shin Godzilla happened where he's basically portrayed as a force of nature again, but more of a godlike punishment, and not the benevolent kind, either.

Of the recurring kaiju, Mothra was the most consistent in that she's seen and worshiped as a goddess.

Only if Kong leaves Skull Island. They made it explicitly clear that if Kong leaves Skull Island, the people living there will die, but also the ecosystem will become more chaotic because of the Skullcrawlers going wild. It's implied in the novelization they were waking up from the alpha call but Kong still had to keep them in check.

So there'd have to be a good reason for them to leave and end up brawling in New York. If they choose to subvert the city expectations again, they might go for Seattle if they're going to stick to the Americas. But I think it's going to remain on an island in the Pacific if not Skull Island.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

Kong: Skull Island is my favorite of these Monsterverse movies so far, that movie is fucking awesome.

I rewatched it last night, and I think the best parts about it was the nature scenes and the moments where we follow Kong. It's the most stylized of the films, though, that keeps it from being a boring watch, but the humans kinda don't work for me past John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson and John C. Reilly's characters, but even Reilly's kinda doesn't do much outside of being a guide. Shame. I did joke to my brother that I hope we see those fucking ants in GvK, though XD.

Oh, I just came across this scrolling through the Godzilla Movies Twitter that I thought was amusing. So the MUTO shown at the end of KotM bowing to Godzilla is actually the Queen MUTO, probably the previous mate of MUTO Prime (wait, that was female, wasn't it? Ah, I can't recall), hasn't been clarified that I can tell (I'm not on Instagram where this was revealed on Mike Doughtery's Instagram). She's characterized as such by the dorsal ridges looking like a crown.

According to Mike, she's covered in scars from either battle or mating rituals, and she bowed with the other Titans because "she's not stupid". She was undiscovered, hibernating beneath a strip mall in Hoboken, NJ. And yes, she has a nickname, which is

Barb.

Did Mike always provide the translation of the Buddhist chant used in Ghidorah's theme?

It's the Heart Sutra, Japanese version if I'm reading things correctly. It famously states, "Form is empty, emptiness is form", although it's not necessarily meant to be about the void, but understanding the emptiness in your form is to lead to enlightenment. In this case, it doubles as an exorcism of an evil and protection from the nothingness that Ghidorah represents.

There's a YouTube comment from a Taiwanese/Vietnamese (can't recall) fan that perfectly explains it, but I'm trying to find it. I can't remember on which video of the Ghidorah theme it's on, I'll post it here if I find it.

EDIT: The commenter's actually Indian. But here you go, this is the post:

The chanting in the track is actually broken/out-of-order to symbolize Ghidorah's deceitful nature. It's genius.

Bear probably wrote an post about the score on his blog. I know he's quite busy these days but I remember during BSG, he would write a blogpost after each episode about the work that went into the creation of a theme or a variation. For example, he said once that he wrote this while on his way to the hospital to get a surgery and at the same time there was the Hollywood Writer's Strike and both RDM and the studio weren't sure if the show would come back.

Jersey?
Should have been woken up by 3 Mile Island, tbh.

No trailer yet, but Legendary Comics had a pre-recorded panel they put up on YouTube a few days ago since conventions have been canceled for the time being. They showcased some art of the two prequel comics to Godzilla vs Kong. The Godzilla prequel comic's going to be from his perspective so there may-or-may-not be humans to be seen, and Kong's is through the view of a female fighter pilot and looks to be about what he was doing since the '70s. He grew himself a beard :D. But oh, we got a new look at Camazotz, and is stated to be the embodiment of darkness/nightmares. There's also going to be a new Kong picturebook, but it's a recent announcement so nothing's been shown of it just yet.

Art is not final, but a sneak peek's still something for this dry spell.

Looks like we have our composer officially confirmed for GvK, it's Junkie XL.
godzilla-kong-junkie-xl.jpg

Anyone able to vouch for him? I've seen a few of the films he composed for, but that's only a very small portion, and although I can't think of any stand-out themes, I don't recall disliking the music in those movies. But then again, I need to go back to re-listen to a lot of soundtracks anyway.

Apart from Fury Road and the Wonder Woman theme, I don't really feel like he's done anything of note. I liked Bear way better.

Hate to say it but something smells amiss with Goji Vs. Kong. With Wingard directing and the movie constantly going through postponements, I'm starting to feel like it'll be a miracle if they're able to conjure up something decent. If Dougherty, a person who LOVES Godzilla, was able to make a passable film that the critics still hated, I don't see much hope with a mediocre director like Wingard doing better than him. I'm hoping that it doesn't turn into another BvS situation.

I expect the movie to be pushed back to 2021. Even if theaters open up in July, like we're all thinking, Black Widow has already been pushed back close to Godzilla and Kong's release date, and I don't think Legendary wants to mess with that.

As for Junkie XL a composer, that makes me happy. Mad Max: Fury Road is one of my favorite scores in the last decade at least, and his Wonder Woman theme was the best part of Batman V Superman (better than even Wonder Woman herself), so I'm optimistic.

Still, I would have preferred a return from Bear as he hit a grand slam with his score. Music has always been an important part of the Godzilla series, and he absolutely nailed it with his efforts, and I would have liked to see what he could deliver for Kong and....

Mechagodzilla, who is heavily rumored to be in the film.

I haven't bothered to watch any of the Legendary Fatzilla canon. Do they use The Godzilla Song?

I think we got spoiled hard by Bear lol.

Yeah, something seems kinda fishy, but I'm still remaining optimistic because the summary we have sounds intriguing. But at the same time, I feel like we're getting something similar in the upcoming Jurassic World movie, and this could turn out to be a problem (this came from Godzilla-Movies, but it was an IMDb summary apparently--also underlined the part that concerns me):

"In a new world where man and monster now coexist, Monarch must lead the way to a prosperous future alongside the Titans, keeping humanity in check. However, rival factions that want to manipulate the Titans for war begin to rise under the guise of a nefarious conspiracy, threatening to wipe out all life on the planet. Meanwhile on Skull Island, strange seismic activity draws the attention of Godzilla and Kong alike."

So the idea sounds great, sounds perfectly natural given how we humans could totally react to stuff like this, but the execution needs to hold up well for this to pay off. I think that's the biggest worry we all have for this movie, especially given how good and fun the previous films have been up to this point. The critics are going to hate it no matter what, but that does make me think they're all going to zone in on that and drive some bullshit agenda that has no place because they aren't going to care about the monster fights that from what we can gather is gonna get juicy given how it was rated:

Expecting Kong: Skull Island levels of monster gore here lol. So just gonna have to wait and see, hope for the best.

If we get a BvS situation with GvK, the "SAVE MOTHRA" meme attached to it is just going to be even more hilarious ngl.

Legendary hasn't made an official statement, but the official GvK Twitter did retweet that the rumors about it being pushed back aren't true. It looks like that's permanent.

Still think it's gonna be MechaGhidorah. It's gonna be great.

I'm not recalling the military march being used, maybe in the "Battle in Boston" track, but that entire track grows hair on my face, so what do I know.

FFS, couldn't they get Bear again instead of another Zimmer protégé?

They've gotten a different composer for each film, so I think they wanted each movie to have its own flavor with different directors and composers.

I loved what Bear did for KOTM and if they brought him back, I'd have been stoked, but I'm willing to give Junkie XL a chance.

I heard it used twice in the film. Once when he emerges from the ocean after they revive him with the nuke and in the Battle in Boston when Godzilla and King Ghidorah charge at each other for their final battle
