Google’s Chrome extension cull hits more uBlock Origin users - USE FUCKING BRAVE

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Google is disabling the original uBlock Origin ad blocker for more Chrome browser users, alongside other extensions that are no longer supported as the browser migrates to its new extension specification, Manifest V3. According to Google, the new standard aims to improve privacy and security, but also removes a feature that some ad blocking extensions relied on to work — a compromise that Mozilla is unwilling to make for its own Firefox browser.

Users online are reporting on Reddit and X that Chrome is removing outdated extensions. In Chrome, a notification window will appear underneath the extensions tab on the browser taskbar with a message encouraging users to remove the impacted add-on, saying it has been turned off and is “no longer supported.” Two buttons are available that allow users to either quickly delete or manage their extensions.

Google’s uBlock Origin phaseout on Chromium-based browsers began in October, but started to have a wider impact in recent weeks. Bleeping Computer has also reported that extensions on staffers devices are being turned off, and Verge staffers have seen similar updates on our own machines.

These changes come as Google migrates Chrome away from the now defunct Manifest V2 specification. Support is being killed not just for uBlock Origin, but for any extension that hasn’t (or is unable to) update to Manifest V3. uBlock Origin users can switch to uBlock Origin Lite, which has more limited filtering capabilities than its predecessor due to Manifest V3’s ad blocking restrictions.

Chrome won’t be the only service affected by the Manifest V3 rollout — other Chromium-based web browsers like Microsoft Edge are also losing V2 support and Brave says it can only offer “limited” support once all Manifest V2 items are removed from the Chrome Web Store. Mozilla says that Firefox will continue offering both extension specifications, however, potentially giving uBlock Origin users a new browser to relocate to.

For most ads on websites adguard dns works just fine, don't need an adblocker. Youtube ads that won't work for though.

Oh boy I can't wait to go back to being eye-raped by ads constantly like I'm watching cable TV and having every page on the internet take twice as long to load again.

Jesus, reading any videogame guide is going to be torture.

It's coming soon, fellas.

As someone who's only heard bad things about Brave and how everyone who shills it is a stupid nigger who likes cryptominers living rent free in their computers, what's so good about it? I'm not being facetious, I gotta know what kiwis think of it if I'm going to get off my lazy ass and migrate browsers. Mozilla also promised privacy given the fact they're a private company that doesn't need to rely on adware like Google and we all saw how that went.

Allow me to steelman Brave the browser and divorce it from the crypto shekels.

a) All the additional features (i.e. BAT, Wallet, Leo, Cards, News, etc) are opt-out. You're 100% able to disable them and they generally stay disabled.

b) Brave's more or less "Chromium, but with a built-in ad blocker and some decent features like Vertical Tabs." Brave Shields effectively function like a static ad filter. You don't have granularity or controls, but it's basically equivalent ot running ABP with EasyList and EasyPrivacy enabled and no whitelisted ads... or uBlock Origin with static filtering only. If you need a drop-in Chromium replacement, Brave's better than standard, Chrome, Ungoogled, Edge, Opera, and Vivaldi.

c) From 2019-2022, Brave, the corporation/foundation/whatever, went all-in on crypto. FTX, Gemini, and Binance integration was basically shoved in your face, the BAT system was actually pleasant... until all the ads devolved into the same 3-4 ads for hardware crypto wallets and Web3 "games" where I do more shit than is fun in a flash game... for like a percent of a percent of a percent of some token based on ETH that will get rugpulled anyway.

FTX's collapse thankfully slammed the brakes on further crypto lunacy, but it must be said: Brendan Eich ain't immune to cataclysmic blunders like Mitchell Baker is. I think ti's something about working at Mozilla that just alters your brain or curses you or whatever.

Honestly this is a big relief for me. I'm not a /biz/ retard who thinks all monetary systems are rigged therefore it's better to trust fly by night ponzi schemes, so I was a bit hesitant to download Brave specifically for the reason it might make my computer run worse.

I've heard the adblocker is always on point with the youtube kikes who keep making the website worse for those who use adblocker, it's the main reason I considered brave first.

This is where the whole claim comes from? I can't say I'm surprised. Thanks for the info, will look into the browser further now.

But are my niggas at AdNauseam okay?
I had to give up on AdNauseam in favor of just shelling out for AdGuard because, every time I restarted by browsers, I would find myself having to remove and reinstall the same extension literally ad nauseam.

So far, AdGuard is working like a dream on every device, and I hope it stays that way.

Its a really solid ad blocker built in. If you have it on your phone, you can play youtube (through the browser, not the app) without ads and be able to turn off the screen.

I have Brave on my work laptop and for some reason the ad blocker download function is spazzing out currently and not working. I am blown away how many ads there are now, had no idea because Brave (still works on my home and cell) blocked it all.

Brave is still based on chromium IIRC, just use Firefox + uBlock.
And when firefox caves? which they slowly have been?
https://ladybird.org/ looks promising but it isn't out yet.
The software landscape, esp in the browser space, is shrinking quickly, and terrifyingly.
Of course, there's always the N-WORD option. (some people call it the N-BOMB).
You could get a very basic home server and install a pi-hole or the like, which would completely negate anything any browsers could do.

It cannot be overstated how badly Google needs to be burned to the ground and made an example of. We have evil companies (zuccerbook), and we have retardedly incompetent companies (Microsoft). Google is uniquely the absolute worst major tech corporation that is both evil and retardedly incompetent. Working at Google should be a black mark of shame on a resume

Well, Brave was good while it lasted. Guess I'll have to switch back to Firefox, the slowest browser since Netscape Navigator, once the Brave devs decide they can't wait any longer to update their Chromium.
