Google’s Chrome extension cull hits more uBlock Origin users - USE FUCKING BRAVE

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Google is disabling the original uBlock Origin ad blocker for more Chrome browser users, alongside other extensions that are no longer supported as the browser migrates to its new extension specification, Manifest V3. According to Google, the new standard aims to improve privacy and security, but also removes a feature that some ad blocking extensions relied on to work — a compromise that Mozilla is unwilling to make for its own Firefox browser.

Users online are reporting on Reddit and X that Chrome is removing outdated extensions. In Chrome, a notification window will appear underneath the extensions tab on the browser taskbar with a message encouraging users to remove the impacted add-on, saying it has been turned off and is “no longer supported.” Two buttons are available that allow users to either quickly delete or manage their extensions.

Google’s uBlock Origin phaseout on Chromium-based browsers began in October, but started to have a wider impact in recent weeks. Bleeping Computer has also reported that extensions on staffers devices are being turned off, and Verge staffers have seen similar updates on our own machines.

These changes come as Google migrates Chrome away from the now defunct Manifest V2 specification. Support is being killed not just for uBlock Origin, but for any extension that hasn’t (or is unable to) update to Manifest V3. uBlock Origin users can switch to uBlock Origin Lite, which has more limited filtering capabilities than its predecessor due to Manifest V3’s ad blocking restrictions.

Chrome won’t be the only service affected by the Manifest V3 rollout — other Chromium-based web browsers like Microsoft Edge are also losing V2 support and Brave says it can only offer “limited” support once all Manifest V2 items are removed from the Chrome Web Store. Mozilla says that Firefox will continue offering both extension specifications, however, potentially giving uBlock Origin users a new browser to relocate to.

Does this affect me in any way?
Firefox is in no way associated with Google nor Chromium, it is not affected. Please learn how to read while using a forum.
Also, Is Brave better than Firefox?
It's okay to use both, most people do when one or the other has intermittent issues. Brave uses Chromium so it tends to use more memory per tab, I haven't used Firefox in over a decade after it had a ton of scuffed updates and performance issues so I can't give a good review.
I've been using Opera and I never see ads.
Yeah but it's also Chinese and monitors all of your shit.

Same but in Spanish. Feels good man.

Switched to Firefox when IE stopped being the only choice, and never cared about browsers again. Firefox just works. I only ever see Chrome/Edge on other people's computers.

Firefox and the Mozilla Foundation turning itself into an "ad agency and AI company" that is AI mining you and now claims ownership in their TOS to every single piece of data that is transmitted through your browser is considered a more significant issue. They lost their main source of revenue (Google) in the anti-trust case and also have been quite clear that they will resell all of your data as well.

Already knew this well in advance since the announcement and how many people made a storm about it. If anyone is still using Chrome even now, joke is really on you. I use Chrome only for things now that I readily need access to. Like, Chrome seems to work best with things like my car insurance site or my web portal for my health insurance, shit like that. Everything else I do, I use Floorp or LibreWolf so I can continue being ad-free. I'm still going to be ad-free on Chrome because there's no where I'm going that's going to pop up an ad.

Use Firefox? They're already working themselves in a corner with one dumbass decision after another, just this year alone. I'd rather use browsers built off from the other browsers than just use the primary browser, myself.

I will never understand why normie cattle are so content about advertisement. I feel violated when I'm being forced to watch any form of advertisement. It's visual/audio pollution that rot people's brain over time, like eating a chunk of lead. Never in my entire life has an advertisement convinced me to buy a product or changed my mind about a brand. I think this tolerance for consuming ads stems from the boomer TV era, they marveled at the technology, adopting the format without any afterthought. Now everyone expects to see ads everywhere. All I see is red when I see one. 😡

And today's ad sucks compared to older ones like these ones.

Back when "Google Chrome" first came out, I didn't switch over to that because one cannot disable caching with it. Looks like I made the right choice by still not preferring it, even though more and more websites are optimized for it, or won't even work without it. Oh and also, uBlock provides an alternative to Google "Safe Browsing" (which then means a constant downloading of blacklist URLs from Google), and of course blocks the ads. I can see why Google wants ad block gone. They're the Micro$oft of Current Year...

If you use YouTube or GMail without ad blocker, there can be hundreds or thousands of elements that an ad block would otherwise block.
Small PL but, I have to use M$ Teams for work and holy fuck you should see what NoScript and uBlock sandbox out within the first minute. I can't imagine what normies experience just trying to look up a recipe or check the weather forecast without 3 condoms on, (:_(

Wait, what? There are ads in Teams? What sort of stuff is it blocking?

"Haha well I just ignore the ads," - Every fucking normalfag I've ever talked to
that's because they've been conditioned to be used to ads and don't care when the ads get more obnoxious or intrusive. They probably don't even notice it and still pay for several streaming sites at a time.
A real herd of Niggercattle if I ever done saw one yessir! They've got them so docile!
At this point it's just principle. I'd wager most of us haven't seen an ad in years and we don't plan to start seeing them now.
