GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

Are porch pirates a big deal in some places? The closest we've come is some bored teens at a nearby high school tried to walk off with a package my wife ordered that happened to be a very expensive hair curling thing or whatever but luckily our neighbours saw them and said 'The fuck you doing?' so they just dropped it and left. If you were in a big city or somewhere with lots of Diversity™ I'd just hold at depot to avoid any heart aches but generally it's good to cut down on any temptation.
First time I've seen it happen round here, all it takes is someone seeing an opportunity and taking it as it was a fairly small box.

I just got an Intel Nuc 11 Extreme because I don't feel like waiting for the Nuc 12, which is going to have a 16c Alder Lake CPU in it. This is obviously not a machine for people looking to maximize specs-per-dollar ratio, so don't even start with how you could have built a way more powerful machine for less money. This is tiny, and it has a skull on it.

So far, I'm rather impressed. The best way to describe it is that it's the sort of machine Apple would make if Apple didn't hate you and liked glowing skulls. It's got a premium feel, with an engineered cooling solution rather than just cramming in off-the-shelf fans, 8 USB-3 ports, built-in WiFi and BlueTooth, and an SD card reader. It's not half-assed.

The case is a remarkably accessible design. Undo two screws, and the whole thing pops apart easily. It's really easy to replace the components. Even the CPU and RAM are in a discrete plug-and-play Compute Module, so if you really hate money, you can just put in the new Alder Lake module once it's out. There's also a bay underneath to add another SSD in about 30 seconds. It takes a full-size GPU, up to 350W. I have 64 GB of RAM and a Radeon 5700 XT in it now.

So if you want to pay a lot of money for your computer to be very tiny and have a skull on it, I would recommend this.

The chihuahua of computers. And just like the tiny dog the skull is purely ornamental and serves no function.
This is false. It annoys my wife. Worth every penny.

Honestly, though, the skull is the one thing I'm not really thrilled about. This thing is priced way out of range for teenagers and other people who want their stuff to look edgy-cool. I don't really mind it, but I'm not 20. I'd prefer a more grown-up aesthetic, even just a big intel logo would be better. I could turn the skull off, sure, but I paid for this skull, goddammit, I'm gonna have a fucking skull on my desk.

My last computer was ibuypower. It was what you might call fine, but all the stuff they cheaped out on really annoyed me after a while, particularly the insufficient USB ports, lack of Bluetooth or Wifi, and bloated case size.

The skull was always a weird detail that felt out of place on those things. It didn't feel like an organic "brah, put a glowing skull on it!" design element where the bad taste is sincere.
The computers themselves looks awesome in every other way.

"You know it's for gamers because there's a skull."

How the motherboard vendors respond to this is a different story. I wouldn't expect all motherboards to start coming with 4 outputs, but why not stick 2 on there? Maybe the lowest end A620 motherboards will include more, with the expectation of being used without a graphics card.
maybe i'm just a retard but why would anyone need 4 outputs? i find duel screens obnoxious and 4 would be like the hacker in films but obviously even less needed, you can only game on one, maybe have music or a video in another, i guess the 3rd could be work related but then what the 4th is for socializing?
I was at the computer shop a few days ago, and I heard a customer say that he had just bought a 660 for $250. Not a 1660 Super, a 660. He wasn't misremembering it, either, because he sent in a picture of it later.
its like vintage cars or tvs, something that used to be common becomes more valuble because only the weirdos still have it or want it.

No, he just didn't know anything about PCs and bought an overpriced part thinking it was better than it actually was.

I was going to say he should have looked into it, but googling "is the 660 a good GPU" gives some positive reviews, so he might have just not checked the dates on them.

I keep seeing people say HOLD THE LINE until fall. I know that one of the local electronics guys around me is doing an AMD "event" with a bunch of stuff marked down but nothing is screaming at me to pull the trigger now versus closer to Christmas when the black friday/cyber monday shenanigans start to take effect.

That said, they've got a 5600X for $240CAD...
Well that is true and you could get deals before the fall. But you have to look more diligently on those off months because it is traditionally the best times to buy things. Not just computers but everything as well.

In the past 27 years I bought during September to November and got my deals to build IMHO the best bang for the buck computers that could be made.

I used to go into Private contests to do this. The last time I won was in 2019. 2020 and 2021 was no go years because of the outrageous pricing going on, and the stupid people who bought video cards that you could have purchased a use car with.

That's up to you when you want to buy. I know what months I look to in making my purchases.

I highly doubt I'll be building a full rig as I'm extremely happy with what I got. But SSD's and a new Video card such as the AMD 6800 would do me nicely as I believe this will be a great card to undervolt.

Dual monitors are extremely useful. But sometimes you need 2xHDMI, and sometimes you need 2xDisplayPort, hence 4 ports on most cards these days.

2-3 is not too hard to figure out. I don't know about 4. Instead of having them all the same size, you could use something like a tablet-sized portable display connected as an info panel. Or an ultrawide, short WaveShare touch display which could go between a keyboard and primary display:

Whatever the case, I think I've seen mini PCs out there with 2 HDMI, 1 DisplayPort, and 1 USB-C output.

Meth is one helluva a drug. In Texas you can "legally" shoot someone now since it is a felony. I don't suggest you do it since you will have to fight the jury trial and by god if you shoot a nigger in a large city you'll be more fucked than Chauvin.

Anyone have suggestions for a MIPS based board without ARM cores?

My ASUS AC-66U seemed like it was on its way out. It was constantly disconnecting and having issues bringing wlan interfaces up after restart. Download speed became abysmal at 5ish MB/s on a 250 mbit connection. Just picked up an AX-68U and flashed ASUS Merlin onto it. Wifi 6 is working really well and the range is excellent. I am going to setup entware and either adguard home or diversion for DNS based ad blocking later today. I'm sure there's some other scripts/programs I'll set up too.
