GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

No one begrudges them charging a squillion dollars for the 4090 - there's always going to be people with more money than sense. But these price levels for mainstream cards are unforgivable. They really are killing the industry.

as much as the gpu situation these past few years is disappointing, are there any games that have come out that are just so good that it needs anything newer than pascal/polaris to be playable?
hahahahaha fuck no, I still don't have a single game I couldn't have just played on my 8-year-old GTX 970 on at least medium-low 1080p.

I do. I'm pretty fucking tired of people saying "Buh-buh-but it's a halo card! Dude, it's like a ferrari". You know what, that was cool and all back in the Titan days and whatnot, but these things are now being used to affect prices downsteam.

There are people actually DEFENDING the 4070ti pricing because it's about the same as a 3090 for less money. But I thought that was a ferrari and shouldn't be used to compare value to? Oh, but now that it makes the next generation look like a value, it's okay. This linear perf/$ has been going on since Turing and I'm tired of it. I'm tired of people simping for it.

Same shit as when Ampere was proclaimed as being such a steal...when compared to fucking Turing of all things, and the stupidly overpriced 2080ti at that. When compared to Pascal it was a linear increase.

It's just crazy how bad things have gotten. I remember when a GTX 1060 6gb card pretty much was on par with the 980 Ti, the top card of the previous gen. Now we have this 4070 Ti that can't even consistently beat a 3080 non-Ti while being more expensive than last gen cards.

Lol nope, particularly if you're content with 1080p. Only reason to consider upgrading to say a 3000/4000 RTX would be if you're after 2k or 4k resolution or want to play around with neural networks. There's highly unlikely to be anything game-wise in the next couple of years that could necessitate a graphics upgrade.

Depends on the games you play. Usually the current games that are worth playing are indie titles that have relatively low requirements. Rx580/590 to 1060/70 are still plenty fine unless you do 3D work in blender or something and need more ram.

People in the tech business said that Nvidia strangled GPU 30x0 production so that the high prices would be the new normal sans scalpers. Shocking if true.

I think the neural network/CUDA thing have suddenly directed some of the otherwise AMD or undecided market towards Nvidia. We're making the mother of all coom jars here Jack! Can't fret over every brand sold.

And it's just as bad on the AMD side. I'd like to upgrade from my 5700xt and there is just nothing to upgrade to. There has been so little performance per dollar improvement since 2019.

I received a few newsletters from various local stores and the 4070ti they brag to be having in stores is 1190$ or so.
Bros, I think I am done upgrading the PC, especially as I no longer really play games.
Was really fun for a good while. I can no longer justify such prices. I can buy the latest sportswatch and running shoes and apparel and more for that price and it's gonna be just as gamey yet healthy. This shit is lunacy.

Try your luck with APUs minis and SOC, there are some at 400 bucks that can even run CP 2077 at normal if you dont care for fancy effects

It's a shame that AMD a company historically known for being budget friendly just hasn't provided the budget market with any good options after the RX500 series. The RX 6500 XT is a joke.

I mean, why be budget friendly when people were oh so willing to be the dumbest consumers possible? Everyone was devouring cards off shelfs like a swarm of locusts, prices be damned.

Then they look over and see just how much people are willing to spend to gobble Nvidia's balls. Fuck it, jump aboard the margin train and see how high you can get them.

I disagree - that there's $10k xeons doesn't affect the price of an i5 in the slightest. Calling it a titan or whatever doesn't matter = the problem is nvidia deliberately blurring the line between halo and mainstream, and AMD letting them get away with it.

It's all intel's fault anyway. A competitive arc lineup would have crushed them both.

Well that's the point. In a normal situation these high end prices wouldn't affect the lower end pricing.

And no, it's not "AMD letting them get away with it", it's the consumer. All people have to do is literally not buy the shit. It's not Intel's fault, either. It's whoever opens their wallet up for the next fix.

Why should AMD and Intel undercut Nvidia when people buy Nvidia cards at retard prices? The consumer gave Nvidia 80%+ market share, now reap the consequences.
