GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

The issue with NVIDIA making its own x86 CPU is that Intel holds a bunch of patents on implementing the ISA, so you need a license from them. AMD has a license going back to the 8086 days, which Intel did in fact try to block them from using to make anything more than a 286, but Intel lost a key lawsuit, and that kept AMD alive. Then AMD invented x86_64, so the two companies are now mutually dependent. There's no way Intel will license x86 out to anyone again, ever.

Nobody is trying to implement NVIDIA's GPU instructions, so there's nothing similar for them to sue over.
At best Nvidia could design an arm cpu chip that's available for desktops and workstations and is compatible with their GPU cards

If Microshit opens their next xbox to PC games too (even with or without Steam, but Microshit might just say fuck it and open it for pc gayming), then they could do well on a $750 or so system for their next xbox; then again this is Microshit and they will fuck it up somehow probably.
Basically if they're not retarded, then they could make a PC/Xbox hybrid that would appeal to most low to mid tier gamers (akin to a gaming laptop, as it wouldn't be upgradeable). That said, I'm still hoping Valve makes a home console Steam Machine again, and not just a standalone VR; it'd be awesome if it would allow for an eGPU, to help with the longevity of it.
I think the time to add a Windows PC mode on Xbox was before next gen. It certainly would have made Xbox Series S at $300 (often less on sale) attractive as a mini PC. Now they have raised the price of their consoles (lol) since they couldn't plan for the tariffs or want to wind down their business. The Xbox division is in turmoil, and they're slapping the name on a Meta headset, ROG handhelds, and whatever they can do to dilute the brand. It might not survive long enough to launch a PC/Xbox experiment, a subsidized box competing in a sea of other PC boxes. And it could be great for us buyers, but maybe Microsoft would face trouble with PC OEMs or antitrust scrutiny for selling their own mega APU gaming PC at a loss.

If they don't turn it into a PC but want to allow Steam on Xbox, there would have to be a revenue split which could be unpalatable for both sides, or Steam getting all the revenue from in-Steam sales as normal.

There were rumors of some kind of Steam Machine using a Phoenix APU or even a dGPU but they may have been fake and gay, so only count on a Steam Deck 2 coming. Valve has gotten other x86 handheld makers to adopt SteamOS, which is nice. They could try a general release of SteamOS 3 to capitalize on Windows 10 support ending.

You know, a SFF Steam Machine based on an APU would actually be pretty neat. It would be PC gaming in disguise to fool my console gaming friends and family.

youtube recommended me this shit for some reason and by the heavenly lord you are going to see it too.

just because i was looking for a bunch of apu's doesn't mean i want you to recommend me a tranny, youtube.

What's a decently cheap and relatively recent CPU/MB kit that I can grab used to get proper ECC on a build nowadays? I have an AM4 build but I can't bring it over due to getting custom taxed to shit. I always try to buy the gen of just retired server stuff, so that leaves me to think either Sky/kaby server, AM4 with ECC, or the lolcow choice would be a Milan Epyc 7373X (I can get one for about $800, but I prefer not to lmao)

Other news. Someone must've stolen the tooling for AM4 from biostar and slapped some white paint on it. $38 dollars for the board.

Is there any information about what percentage of Intel staff has been laid off since 2021? And what departments have been hit the hardest? They're in the news every few months for "thousands" more staff layoffs.

i kind of thought on picking this chinese b450 but i found a gigabyte for less because at least i know where to go for a bios update, on ali you can find some ancient boards they sell too.

Can't see them ever doing this, since the way consoles make money is via software royalties, and Microsoft collects no royalties on PC software. Additionally, when you break down the walls on the garden, you no longer guarantee every console has the exact same run environment, but consumers will still expect that any problems are your fault and that you will fix them.

Xeon E5's on Chinese motherboards are common poverty builds in some parts of the world.

Freedom isn't free, brother.

From what I understand they have something similar to microsoft where every month "underperforming" staff are fired, so I assume they are just scraping all the departments.

It's basically been all but confirmed that the Xbox console division is closing up shop. They won't say it out loud, but the current gen of Xbox consoles are becoming extremely difficult to find as Microsoft slashes production and pulls stock from retailers to recoup money. Anecdotally, I haven't seen one available for sale at my local Walmart for six months.

I dunno what their plan is for the Xbox brand when they leave the traditional console space, but they are leaving it.

Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago where that brown woman announced their partnership with AMD regarding their future hardware?

iGPUs are already nearly 8% of gamers on Steam.

This chart is always good for a dose of reality:
  • The average PC gamer does not have meaningfully more powerful hardware than the latest game consoles
  • AMD's market share is trivial
  • XX60 GPUs dominate; high-end GPUs (4090, 5090, etc) might as well be marketing stunts.
  • People keep their GPUs for a long time. NVIDIA's 50 series is not targeted at 40 series owners. It's targeted at 10 series and 20 series owners looking to finally upgrade.
I wonder how they count someone like me. My primary GPU is technically the integrated one, because I plug my monitor into the motherboard’s USB-C port and use DRI_PRIME=1 %command% on any Steam game more demanding than Rimworld (and with the new DLC I actually had to do this for Rimworld too, because FPS was capping around forty on 4k and it was making the game run like shit). It neatly separates demanding tasks like rendering games or running AI from less intensive tasks like displaying my animated KDE shader-wallpaper or YouTube.

Like, if Steam queries my computer it’s going to say the primary GPU is an integrated AMD Radeon (the one on the 7950X), with an RTX 4090 as the secondary GPU.

It'll report whatever GPU it thinks you're using to play games. If you have two, it'll opt for the more powerful of the two.
